This is going to be a bit of a rant/whine, so brace yourselves.
Several times now, in the filthy cup, we have had players make it to the semifinals, or even the finals.... only to have to leave, and FF.
In both cases, for obvious reasons, this COMPLETELY FUCKS UP THE EVENT.
Look, I understand. Shit happens sometimes. But there has been a pretty big trend of this lately - in some cases the same player is doing it over and over again, but not always.
As an event organizer, I am pretty tired of it.
If you cannot play through the entire event, dont waste my time and your opponents time by registering. Not only is it wasting time, but it is incredibly disrespectful to everyone involved.
At the bare minimum I am going to be implementing a policy where finalists who FF will no longer get any payout. I would also expect to see much harsher rules about eligibility for future events for repeat offenders.

How long do these tournaments take from start to finish, typically?

4-5 hours, generally. $100-$200 prize pool, depending on the week.

That's a lot of day for people to spend playing in a tournament, especially with the pressure, and then down-time between games. If you broke it up into two days, I think more people would be able to stay in, and play better games.

Or they could just... not sign up for events that they wont have time to play in? I mean, this week is Filthy NA Cup #50 - 50. By now, the players ought to have a handle on how long to expect this to take (not to mention these people play in a lot of other weekly cups that take similar amounts of time).

I agree with you. It sucks that there are conflicts with overlapping tourneys and cws and stuff like that, but then I think people should only sign up for the one they want to play the most.
It's always unfortunate with a walkover but them happening the first round is kinda ok. Walkovers in the semi finals really fucks with a tourney though, at that point they sometimes cast every game. My experience is also that breaking up tourneys to two days would be a lot more difficult to commit to than 4-5 hours for one day.

yeah, if you wind up needing to FF in the first round.. it's annoying but not a big deal. Nobody really gets hurt by that. After the first round, though, you have cost someone else the opportunity to advance.

It's not always that simple. If 64 people from different places around the world all try to commit to something for 5 hours, there's a good chance that something could come up for some of them. I think you should look at this more from the players' perspective. You may be putting a lot into the tournament, but the players are also putting a lot in. You wouldn't have an event without players, so I think you should take care of them whenever possible, and keep a positive attitude. Once you start going negative, you'll inevitably find yourself being frustrated, because things never go 100% according to plan. You can't control other people, so you shouldn't waste so emotion on these things that you can't control.

Well, I respect and appreciate your input and opinion.
Thankfully, I made the rule change, and literally everyone other than you has been positive/supportive of how I've changed it and my reasons why

It's probably because I'm wrong.
