... with music.

Hi all,

I'm feeling really down in the dumps lately. Unfocused, sluggish, lethargic, permanently sad with a constant sense of impending doom. My posts on TL might reflect that.

I think what I'm missing in my life is music, and lots of it. The happiest I ever was when I met people and played music with them.

Now it's up to TL to recommend me an album every day.

Any genre that has real instruments, mostly from the rock / metal / classic / singer songwriter genres. I'm an avid guitar player, or at least I used to be before I got so depressed, so if the album is based heavily on guitars, I'd appreciate that.

I will listen to one album every single day. If I really like an album, or if I find it remarkable in any other way, I will write a short review.

Please suggest an album with a short comment. I will go mainly by first come first serve, unless I already know that album well or I find a suggestion particularly interesting.

Thank you TL, I really appreciate it.

List of albums:

07.02.2017: Ghost - Opus Eponymous (thanks Coagulation!)
08.02.2017: Melanoid - Asleep in the Wake (thanks NonY!)
09.02.2017: Neurosis - Times of Grace (thanks Tuth!)
10.02.2017: xtc - skylarking (thanks Catplanet!)
11.02.2017: Yann Tiersen - Le Phare
12.02.2017: In Flames - Battles (god damn...)
13.02.2017: Kaleida - Think (thanks John Wick, surprisingly cool album though usually not my taste)

Melanoid - Asleep in the Wake

depression > me too and i love this album and it's not popular at all so it should be all new to you. pretty easy listening but also has some themes you should be able to tap into

if you can't find it, let me know. idk where you can stream it. not on youtube

Led Zeppelin 1. released in 1969.

fuck the Beatles and their manufactured, paint-by-numbers, procedurally-generated "love" songs.

led zep is the best .. can't top that <3

but i'll still add

i love qotsa's earlier hits, their sheer energy in concerts all through their 20 years or so (lives cover several albums but mainly "song for the dead" and "like clockwork")
.. i specifically love the different ways they play the same songs live and that you can see those online is <3

re depression: yes music is the muse of all arts, music is life.. just don't expect it to do more than show you that you yourself have to go live (go out and do music with other people, doing it on your own will only carry you so much).
Don't dig a hole, dig out to exist!
good luck

Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL366AA115A3BE278B

Short comment: The most underrated band, ever. :-)
My favorites from the album: Mirrorball(!), Weather to Fly, The loneliness of a Tower Crane Driver, Some Riot

@Topic:
I like your idea about getting back to what is full of life for you. That will definitely help. I hope (and think) that if you really have a depressive disorder, that might not be the only measure you want to take. Cheers!

The album that I would recommend has worked for me when I was in a quite bad spot in my life, but it may now work for you in the same way, though. Mostly because it's a bit hard to get into, at first this album was fine for me, but it grew on me with time. It finally worked when was down and didn't enjoy the music as I used to. Since you prefer music with guitars you may like it. The whole band revolves around being quite hard to get into, but once you do, it's so amazing. I really enjoy music that requires the listener to open him/herself rather than the listener requiring the music to move him/her without any engagement at all.

Neurosis - Times of Grace (1999)
I love listening to it while cycling through fields, forests and small villages.

Love that album, but I've listened to it so often, and I really fancy listening to new stuff right now.

I've just discovered Hemina a couple of weeks ago. There's some great guitar playing on this album, starting from song one, coupled with strong songwriting. This band have a nice blend of old and new progressive styles, and I find the album to be very uplifting! In fact, if I have work to do this is one of the bands I must NOT listen to before I start, or I'm too energised to get anything done.

Yeah makes sense ^^ I'll try recommending something a bit more obscure then. :D

Hey,

If you're really into music, I've got a feeling you might like Big Boat by Phish. I know it ain't everyone's cup of tea, but probably worth a listen for a musician. + Show Spoiler +

Bonus 1: It's a really happy album. I don't know about you, but some things I deeply enjoy and make me feel shitty the rest of the day. The Wall is, almost objectively, one of the best albums in history. It is something that I deeply enjoy listening to, but then feel less good afterwards. This album, while in many ways only decent, is one that holds more than enough appeal to listen to over and over, and I feel good afterwards. Protip: listen to More on this album. Repetitive, lame, corny, cheesy, what have you. Hard not to smile while listening to it though

Bonus 2: It's a jam band, which means that there are several pretty nice guitar solos, and plenty of hammond organs, horns, etc.
I love the smell of napalm in the morning... it smells like... victory. -_^ Favorite SC2 match ->Liquid`HerO vs. SlayerS CranK g.1 @MLG Summer Championship

this album always helps lift my spirits on a dreary day. it takes you through a summer's day in 46 minutes, through the eyes of a quirky, wonderful English band. hope it brings you some comfort~!

xtc - skylarking (1986)

I think it's finally time to admit it might not be the year of Pet

It's not based on guitars, but it is an incredible album.

Here is my personal favorite album, Mmhmm from relientK, personally there are not many albums were I like every single song but Mmhmm is an exception to that. Very fun and up beat but deep lyrics if you really listen at the same time.

I hadn't heard of that band before but this album made me very happy today.

Thanks a lot, sir!

Aside: If by chance anyone has John Coulton's live album 'Best. Concert. Ever.', I'd be much obliged.
