Getting a jump on my midlife crisis, I've finally gotten the chance to get my hands. If you ask my fiancee, parents, what have you, this is something I've been after a surprisingly long time. My long time friend, current land lord, and occasional employer has agreed to part with this 1998 BMW R11001R for a devastatingly agreeable price.
The only issue is that this bike is located currently in Oregon, which is as you all know, not Minnesota. So since we made the deal for the bike, I've been mulling over options to get this thing local. My soon to be father in law runs a semi out to that part of the world and could collect it from Portland, or the other option is that we take a little vacation to the seaside and rent a trailer to haul it back ourselves. I'm open to both, and the trip out there may help my fiancee come to terms with my buying a new toy for myself.
Its not been ridden in some time and will need a little TLC, and new tires at least, but beyond that the bike only has 10k miles on it (16093.44 km). The seat is off as my friend bought a new battery for the bike in the photos and was looking into installing it and doing an oil change when he was out there last week.
I've got plans to take some classes on motorcycle safety that end with getting fully certified to ride. In Minnesota, you just need to take a written test to get a permit, but that restricts you to riding during daylight hours, and you cannot ride on freeways or with a passenger. You also have to wear a helmet, but I was planning on doing that all the time anyhow.
I think this thing is super pretty, I've been day dreaming for a month now thinking about this bike.

May vary state by state, but my understanding was that if you have the full endorsement you don't have to but are generally considered an idiot. If you have just the learners permit it is a must.
In the cities I don't think I've seen many if any rides without a helmet for sometime now.
I'm pretty ecstatic that it looks like it does, not a crotch rocket, and no fairing. perfect looking bike imo.

Be safe man. That's an awesome bike and the first thing on my to-do list if I move back to the states. Most insurance companies also give discounts if you've taken the certified safety courses. Last, don't even think about riding if you've taken even a sip of alcohol. There's a lot of idiots you need to be alert for.

It is without a doubt a, "not even a beer," machine. I have a rider class in mind at the local community college as well, I'm just not pulling the trigger on that one until I have the bike here in MN and have all the title stuff done with the state.
I did do a quote on insurance and bare bones is pretty cheap, I'd take the class more for the knowledge than the insurance benefit but it is still a good thing to have in mind. I need to play with the numbers on insurance a bit and make sure I have covered what I want.

Looks pretty sweet. I haven't been on a motorcycle in a long time, but I loved it at the time. Let us know when you get it home!
