I am disabled and on Social Security. You can read some of this in previous blogs of mine.

About 3 years ago I moved to Thailand. Before I moved I had Medicare Part D through Silverscript. This is the part that covers prescription medication. Each time I got a medication or a refill on a medication I payed a flat $1.10 copay.

So I recently moved back to the states and am getting my medication filled again. I have to get 6 medications filled today.

Pain Meds: $22
Pancreas Enzymes: $45
Nausea Meds: $5
Triglyceride Meds: $10
Bentyl: $3
antacid: $6

And I come home check the mail and get a letter from silverscript, I think it is a new insurance card. Nope it is a bill for me to pay a $20 premium each month.

This is all for just a one month supply. I will have to pay this everyday. I am disabled. I am on a fixed income that isnt very much about $1200 a month. I have a wife and 2 children. I am lucky my wife actually makes decent money. But for people who dont and have to cover medical expenses this is just crazy.

Can you clarify? Is all of that medication for one day, or one month? Because for a month's supply, that total seems very reasonable even coming from a Canadian (we pay full price or reduced price with medical insurance for medication), but for one day, that would be truly absurd. No one should pay $6 for antacid everyday.

It is monthly.

My point is they expect you to spend 1/10th of your income on medication.

God forbid but if my wife died tonight they would want a single disabled father with 2 children to live on $1200 a month. Then out of that spend $111 on medicine that if I didnt have would be impossible to function and take care of my children on a day to day basis.

I'm no expert on cost of life in the states, but it's known that welfare and social security isn't one of US strengths.
And you actually have political camps who are proud of that.

Plus you're just unlucky for being diabetic or pancreatectomized. The only comfort in that is that no human is safe from disease.

It's pretty hard to reply to your post. I figure most people won't know what to tell you, except that you got unlucky with your fate there, and wish you better luck for the future.
