Why should we care about chess? What fundamental need will it ultimately fulfill?

I like your writing, and the questions it raises in an attempt to elevate chess from an arbitrary boardgame (alongside checkers, go, diplomacy, etc.) to a spiritual level. One question that has been bugging me lately is raised by (and I don't mean to claim chess is trivial): "We know that man has the faculty of becoming completely absorbed in a subject however trivial it may be, and that there is no subject so trivial that it will not grow to infinite proportions if one's entire attention is devoted to it". My question is how do you decide on chess as your hobby out of so many other boardgames and why boardgames in particular? Also what's your chess rating? Can't wait to read next part.

This was at the professional level. Basically in the bathroom you pull out your phone and have somebody send you information based on computer analysis of the position. Which is cheating.
