So it's been a while since I was really interested in competitive Dota and I've come to the realisation that there just isn't a team i follow anymore. I first got into Dota when TL announced a team and ever since I've been following TL players and then ex-TL players. Since Fire has disappeared though nothing has really caught my interest. So to change all this I'm taking a leaf from Hotbid's book and choosing a team to fully get behind.
I've also had a pretty strong interest in the old C9 squad since last Summer's Dreamhack which I attended and found completely supporting. The finals vs Alliance with hundreds of Swedes cheering the other way was some of the most fun I've had watching Dota.
Some other teams that I've followed along the way: LGD.int, VG, old DK, SNA, Zephyr
So with the aim to really get back into watching comp Dota I'm looking for a team to follow. The following are the three teams I'm considering.
EG. Pros: -Has AUI2000 who I met at dreamhack while he was still on C9 and was really lovely. -Likely to go far in tournaments
Cons: -A team that as a TL follower since I started watching esports in SC2 have been the "rival" team. -EZ mode to support, likely to win lots
Team Tinker Pros: -Ex-TL players Qojqva, Bulba, Wayto -Ex-C9 Pieliedie -Black^ who seems like the coolest guy and who I've been following the story of since Mouz
Cons: -Heartbreak may be strong with this team
Cloud 9 Pros: -Envy + Bone7 are still "old C9" who I supported -Fata's Puck
Cons: -EE Drama -Second place (last year was too heartbreaking)
So I'm looking for people's ideas as to which one to commit to. I will change my flair and maybe write up a little blog piece on how the team is doing every now and then once I've decided. If you have another team you think I should support make your case and maybe you can change my mind.

Unfortunately I'm right with you on the whole 'Can't support EG' train because I only used to watch Starcraft on TL for years.
Tinker has a lot of people I like but they're also like Liquid_Hero (my favorite SC2 player). When they're on they can take anyone out there (just look at who liquid beat in the group stage of TI4 and then throw Black in the mix), but when they're not put together they just look hopeless to watch. Personally I still have faith, and just cause the heartbreak may be strong initially, it'll just feel even better when they finally win like mad. Plus you get all that sweet hipster cred!

Well EG are playing TT tonight, might have watch that and see who I get behind while watching, I think I'm going to give tinker a try to start out with. I watched them last night vs Empire and couldn't help supporting them. Lets see how this goes.

PLZ DONT GO EG. Dont besmirch your TL fanhood
And dude, wtf, if you cheered for C9 why did you stop? C9 is a fun team to cheer for imo because their games are always quirky and full of emotion. Also, the best times to be a fan is when things arent going so great so when they make their comeback you're gonna reap the rewards.

man if u have to think liek that ur not a true fan im sorry but ur commitment to a team will be worthless

Honestly Secret as a team never really appealed to me for whatever reason. I respect their players and their ability but i just never really found anything to get behind.
With regards to being not a real fan. I enjoy competitive dota but my problem is that a lot of the teams I've supported have disappeared or changed roster sufficiently that it doesn't feel like the same team. Now I just watch games with only a passing interest. I guess I'm just trying to find something to support coming up to TI because it makes the game more exciting.

teddy may have been harsh about it but he's right, to root for a sports/e-sports team isn't about analyzing which one suits you the best, it's about the feels.
Don't go for EG though, it's the dark side.
|
As I've said I've supported a lot of teams in the past and the reasoning is nearly always pretty arbitrary. With e-sports teams there isn't so much of an obvious reason to support a team a lot of the time. Theres no locality or often even a fixed identity to a lot of teams due to how often the rosters rotate. Honestly I disagree, I feel like its exactly about which one suits you best.
Before now I've had a team that I tried to watch every game for and I guess since Fire disbanded I haven't had that. You guys could be right and maybe I just don't really care enough about the scene if I don't have a natural team to follow. But I figured it was worth a shot to get back into it.
|
Why don't you just support the team that you like or the team that impresses you most?
|
Thats the intention really. I was just posting my thoughts at the minute. I was curious if anybody had similar feelings at points and I figured it would be interesting to talk about peoples preferences in teams.
|
Don't choose for C9. EE's self-loathing is annoying as fuck, they struggle to finish games and b0ne7 is very off and on. Rooting for this team is masochistic in so many ways.
TT is good if you like underdogs. They have a lot of friendly and generally nice people (at least as they show to the public). Decent players individually but they've struggled in team efforts in the past. If you don't expect much than it's hard to be disappointed.
EG has a lot of haters but you won't regret rooting for them. The new line-up seems very serious so you can count on them showing up for tournaments. They have a good mix of IdrA-type personalities and nice-guys which keeps things interesting PR-wise. Plus PPD gives really good interviews and they vary their strategies a lot. Universe is a super-hero, Fear has a beard and Aui is a waifu. Can't go wrong imo
|
Tbh that was the kind of response I was hoping for ViZe. And I can't help agree wtih everything you're saying. I'm leaning towards Tinker due to the underdog status. I'm pretty used to the whole heartbreak supporting TL in the past
There is always EG to fall back on later in tournaments. C9 used to be my fallback team later in tournaments but tbh the shuffles left them with players that I don't like as much personality-wise.
|
I would say C9 as well but even if they have most of the "old c9". For some reason the team does not give off the same feelings. The new c9 is just not the same.
Support EG/Secret if you want a team that wins and if you don't plan on fanboying a chinese team.
Team Tinker , NIP, HR(check out the Dread interview it's pretty interesting) and Burden United are interesting to follow. Empire also seems fine they ain't that drama producing and the team playstyle and drive to win is big.
|
Actually NiP are another team I have a bit of interest in. Burden are a bit so-so for me, I'm not a huge SingSing fan and it looks like a roster destined to fall apart. I'll take a look into HR though, i know very little about them except they've had a few suprisingly big runs. Empire strike me as really quite a solid team but I've never managed to feel much excitment from watching them play personally.
With regards to chinese dota I feel the timezone makes watching them a bit more awkward. Still I really like the look of the new LGD roster, they are the team I think I like most post-shuffle. VG/iG seem like they've come up with really solid teams as well.

EG own, Aui_2000 forever etc
You just have to commit. From ur pro's and cons it looks like ur a tinker kind of guy but that's up to u
|
I'm an EG fan myself, been one ever since I first watched a competitive game of SC2, but from your post I'd say you seem more like a Tinker guy

Pick a good CIS team and follow them, you get to watch lots of YOLO plays and fun games

I try to support stable & up and comming teams as their is no pride in supporting the big starteams. There is less joy in winning a game you are supposed too, but upsetting established order feels pretty good so up and comming teams it is.
