Note: This is just my own personal viewpoint. YMMV
So I recently got back into playing Brood War recently, taking a break from SC2. So far my experience is a heartbreaking reminder that I'm 33, not 16 anymore and that my micro is not what it used to be but nonetheless despite my losing record, I've had more fun in the past few weeks of playing Brood War than I've had in the last 6 months of playing SC2.
Yet when I sit down to watch the game, I've never been able to get into Brood War, not in its heyday, not when it was trying to come back from the scandals and before WoL came out and not now. I tried to watch SSL and 41SL and yet they seem as foreign and cold to me as watching a Dota game, another game I've never really gotten into as an Esport. It's really weird, a lot of great games happened in BW, I don't deny that and they continue to happen but at the top level it's always felt detached to me. Yet when I actually get into it myself, Brood War wins every time, I just love the whole immersion of the music, the old school units and the fun of being able to not worry as much about what league you're in and who you're offending with your awful play.
Maybe it's just me, it's just weird to me that the two games can be so different in terms of the enjoyment they give to me.
Anyway I'm going to go watch TY vs Guilty from Proleague again now, then I might cheese some low level brood war players and probably fail miserably

I get that, bw has nostalgia but watching sc2 is far more familiar bw feels foreign

I think that part of it is that BW feels a lot more centralized to Korea while SCII has a bit more of a global view which is what Blizzard was pushing for. By that, I mean that tournaments like SSL or 41 SL are Korean tournaments and you won't ever see a foreigner there but by contrast, IEM, IronSquad, WCS AM and EU etc... all have lots of foreigners in them so you can probably relate to them a bit more and cheer for them. It also feels closer to home in that case.

I've been trying to follow the SSL, never having been interested in professional BW, and from what I can tell the foreign scene in BW always seemed to be like sitting at the kids table at a holiday dinner, you may say something cute everyone acknowledges, but you are largely ignored
SSL seemed to continue this tradition and didn't do much to accommodate foreign viewers, as far as I know there wasn't an English stream at all, just Sayle's Rebroadcast? Which is fine, I mean I like Sayle, but it is 2015, you should try and accommodate world wide viewers as much as possible especially given this last surge of interest in BW.

I really appreciate the immediacy of a live broadcast ![](/mirror/smilies/smile.gif)
At the same time, our dedicated real-time English interpreters (of the Korean commentating) on the Twitch SSL streams were also pretty amazing, it really enabled me to share in the experience -- that of both the English-speaking and, in a way, Korean communities
