It's been utterly ages since I last did a blog on Team Liquid, so its time to address that.

I know a lot of players and fans aspire to work in esports, particularly in the broadcasting side of things. As someone who has spent a long time in esports, I often get asked about casting and hosting and how to get in to it and get good. So, in order to put something back, I wrote a small book as a guide to esports broadcasting back in 2007. It was relatively popular at the time but over the years it has become very out of date as we moved to HD video and Twitch for example.

So, last year, I embarked on a mission to not only update the book, but to completely re-write large sections, add in all of the things I've personally learned since 2007 and make it a much more rounded book to help those who want to get in to esports commentating or hosting or those wishing to improve.

That journey is almost at an end after 7 months of writing and tens of thousands of words. ESL have been publishing the parts on their website and next month will be the final part, pending any additional questions that might pop up or some special editions that warrant it.

Once the sixth edition has been published, we are then hoping to work on a full blown book complete with diagrams, photographs and examples where applicable. Add all of the previous parts in to it and hopefully make it available in various formats for PC, kindle and tablets.

I hope this helps as many people as possible that want to succeed in this industry.

I've listed below all of the various items and links to which part it falls in to.

Feel free to leave feedback in the comments and I would love to hear from you if you have any ideas on anything else that I should cover in this series that hasn't already been covered.

Part 1
Introduction, background and history.
Different types of esports broadcasters.
Setting up a stream, XSplit, Twitch account, resources.

Part 2
First broadcasts, stepping stones.
Teething problems and how to improve early.
Handling early criticism
Learning from experts
Preparation
Passion, Practice and Professionalism

Part 3
Language
Crowds
Production differences at events
Dress codes
Cameras
The voice and how to improve it
Inflection, projection, enunciation, pacing
Saving your voice and protecting it
Natural talent versus hard work

Part 4
Style and Technique
The art of dead air
Introductions and funneling
Standard and advanced throws, throws to video and commercials
Storylines
Chemistry

Part 5
Coping with negative feedback and abuse
Finding a company (AKA breaking into the scene)
How to get hired
Money and negotiating fees
Advertising and social media
Money and negotiating fees
Common mistakes and the Gibbs rules

Edit: updated broken links and fixed.

Not looking towards an e-sports career in particular, I read just those bits about talking/handling being on camera, mics etc... From what I have experience with, these are really, really spot on - and where I don't, I learned a lot. A really awesome material, no fluff, just practical and useful information. You should think about writing a book on how to write a how-to book

Really good guide and amazingly well written! I never knew there was so much to learn for an esports broadcaster.

This should be an essential read for any caster (newbie or accomplished) looking to improve... there's a lot of good stuff in there.

You can actually make interviews that arent awkward? In e sports?

I'm not planning on broadcasting myself, but I feel like it applies to a lot of the things I do as a regular streamer.

Sorry for bump, but a lot of people were asking me to fix the links and this is now done and they all work again. I think ESL changed their URL structure and it broke the original links, but the content is still there.
