Does anyone have recommendations for starting items to buy? Something that would be better than just just having a number 2 pencil, but not too spendy!

The primary pencil set is one with varying hardnesses, and depending on art style and so forth, you will favor one part of the spectrum more than the other. Technical drawing goes forther into the H zone, and you get the super smeary, smudgy pencil effect in the high B range: http://www.amazon.com/Staedtler-Lumograph-Sketching-100G12-Attractive/dp/B0014E2S0Q/ref=pd_sbs_op_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=0GCJD01Z3N4ENQB23XZ6 lets you experiment with tones and lineweights and so forth, see what you like, and then you just buy individuals of each hardness that you use more of. For reference, a typical #2 pencil is HB, right in the middle of the scale. Then you get some erasers and smudging things: http://www.amazon.com/Sanford-SAN70531-Design-Kneaded-Eraser/dp/B00006IFAJ/ref=pd_sim_op_4?ie=UTF8&refRID=19QFH9VZ5576Z7GQWA6K http://www.amazon.com/Art-Alternatives-Stumps-And-Tortillions/dp/B002ER8M0C/ref=pd_sim_op_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=17QDBV5WTJ4QNX0JAXY7
