I created this video to be an introduction to Starcraft 2 for those who don't know how to watch it and whats going on. Of course, Teamliquid is not the audience, but this is something you could show a friend or family member who is curious about the eSport.

Hopefully it will be of some help.

thats some high level video editing. What program do you use to get the texts in so nicely like that? Hell, I think that would be a great addition for ANY game just to put in small statistics similar to waht dota 2 does

It's not particularly difficult. That stuff is all done in post. I could even do it in Xsplit live, though I'd have to prepare them all in advance.

This was a case of commentating the replay, then having my graphic designer create the information slates based on a script that I wrote. Each is a separate image. Once I have all the image files. Put the footage into Adobe Premiere. Work through it minute by minute, find the appropriate spots for each slate and insert it into the scene, make sure it's long enough to read comfortably and use a simple slide in/out transition on each.

Really easy to make stuff look good as long as you have the right assets.

I wish more tournaments showed more stats, like GSL used to do with winrates by game time, build preference, that kind of stuff. With how minimal overlays are now there's a lot of space to have transparent slates like that

I really want that, because I can't watch starcraft much anymore due to real life things, stuff like that makes me feel like I'm really part of a greater experience.

A good attempt at explaining a very complicated game in a short amount of time, although I feel as though TB's manner of talking very quickly can make it somewhat hard to follow for a new comer.

On a more serious note: Nice video! Everything that makes it easier to explain sc2 to someone is a resource good to have.

Sort of expanding on this video a few of us were talking the other day about the TI4 noob stream and how it was nice for new Dota viewers. I wonder if that would be something that would have worked well for SC2 at Blizzcon. Much like Dota it is pretty complex and tough for new viewers to understand.

I have to say your Bluffer's Guide that you did on Soundcloud before SHOUTcraft Invitation #5 helped a bunch in me trying to introduce a mate to StarCraft. This video is so useful and well made, and will now be my go to resource when trying to show my mates this beautiful game.

Who would watch a 40 minute video about how to even get into watching other 40 minute videos?

I think the idea is good. To help promote the starcraft e-sports scene and whatnot. But i feel like this video is kinda half-assed. Just booting up a replay and going through it seems kinda lazy. Fair enough, it was a good choice of game and the overlay texts describing various things was a nice addition. But i would have prefered to see an edited video of different scenarios going through things a little more in-depth/focused. Having different 'clips' would give you more freedom to explain what is hard for noobs to understand.

And even though its a 40 minute video, it still feels slightly rushed to me. As if you are just giving a quick overview of what the game is about while trying to explain whatever you can that comes to mind.
But if i imagine a noob trying to watch this video and make sense of a game they have never played before, it seems like a lot of information comes fast and there isnt enough time to both read the text and hear what you are saying while seeing what is on the screen/following what goes on in the game. So i feel like its better to first give a quick overview of the game, very short. Then go into more detail on things that seem more complex. All while trying to show what is so great about this game, maybe throwing in some clips of epic engagements or whatever, you know, make the video a little more dynamic.

Don't get me wrong i appreciate all the work and effort, and i'm glad your love for starcraft makes you want to do videos like this. But a video like this shouldve essentially come from Blizzard themselves, and thus shouldve been made at a much higher quality - more professional if you will - with your voice though!
I'm not trying to say the content you produce isn't great in general. But a video like this, with my love for starcraft, i had hoped for so much more. Could i do it better? Of course not. But when it comes down to bringing people in, you have to be so careful. Because of the complexity of the game you might scare potential newcomers away by showing them something that they cant relate to or dont understand.
I remember when Dota2 came out and my friend started playing it, he wanted to teach me the game, but the way he focused on all the information about the different heroes and items it seemed too much to handle for me and i couldnt be fucked to learn it all in such a short timeframe, so in my mind i discarded the game straight away. Like a bad first impression.
Perhaps this is just how my mind works. Having said that, i also appreciate the futility of this post since you have already made the video and its not like you are going to make another one, but again, with my love for the game i cannot help but be slighly critical on this one.

So yeah TL;DR, a great idea, but the execution was not satisfactory to my enormously high standards it seems..

This is great TB thank you! I was just showing my girlfriend Blizzcon stuff on the weekend, and she even watched the opening ceremony with me. We are going to her first live event at IEM San Jose and I was wondering how to make it more interesting for her so she actually knows what is going on. So this video is perfect!

I tried to ask this on reddit and got downvoted to hell for some reason, what exactly does this mean and why exactly do people say this?

In USA, west coast I've never heard people say it. The closest thing I've heard is like 'Good for you' or maybe even something like 'godspeed'.

I dunno, it just sounds grammatically weird and doesn't seem like it has any purpose/relevance most of the time I see it.

My point was, he should have made a 5 minute video explaining the very basics and that's it. Instead he made a 40 minute video that only overwhelms the potential watcher with information when the current casters already do that with 5 tabs of pointless info.

His contributions are undeniable, yes. Quantifiable even. ~100k viewers from that video alone. But like I was saying, a 5 minute video of him explaining the very basics would have been far more helpful than an overwhelmingly long video on how to understand other overwhelmingly long videos. Maybe if you thought for a minute rather than blindly defending TB's incredible greatness you would see that.

Maybe if you thought for a minute rather than blindly defending TB's incredible greatness you would see that.

If we could compress what is said in 40 minutes into a 5 minutes video, the world would be different, you know. Try to make a 5-minute video explaining the basics of Starcraft and you'll probably see it would be impossible, or very incomplete.
And yeah great job TB (:

Apparently over 100,000 people so far.

Is that supposed to be impressive? More people would watch a 2 second video of Pikachu saying "pika!" or grass growing.

Ah just fuck off. People who put in their time to help out SC2 shouldn't have to deal with pricks like you.

My point was, he should have made a 5 minute video explaining the very basics and that's it. Instead he made a 40 minute video that only overwhelms the potential watcher with information when the current casters already do that with 5 tabs of pointless info.

And his point is that your worthless opinion is worthless. Please muster the reflection to weigh TotalBiscuit's contributions to your "edgy" oneliner and decide which of the two isn't worth people's time.

If that's your opinion, present it as an opinion:

"I admire the effort, but I think people new to SC2 would be better off with a short 5 min introduction, 40 minutes might scare people off and beat the purpose of the production."

This way it's clear that you're presenting an opinion with some thought behind it allowing for people to constructively argue with you instead of derailing the thread with having to adress your tone. Your opinion might be valid but no-one is going to care because you insisted on being disproportionately negative about something that really requires effort to be negative about. Which means you were probably not trying very hard to create a discussion on TB's format and moreso looking for the quickest way to get some attention.

And yes, TB has shown enough integrity to warrant me to defend him blindly even though that's not the case here.
I think esports is pretty nice.

"Should"

Your opinion is nothing more than your opinion. You have no authority in the matter. There is no objectively better way to do this and I make long-form content for an audience very receptive to long-form content.

If someone else wants to make a 5 minute primer they're welcome to. I imagine it won't be that effective, Starcraft can be "explained" in 30 seconds, but it won't help the person trying to watch it.

Yes, it can't possible be that people just disagree with you... Most of the things he talks about makes sense in context. Cramming that information into a 5 minute long video would lack that context and only be MORE confusing as a result. You wouldn't get the clear examples of what he's talking about (seeing the game progress and paused at the opportune moments). Your connection with confusion/being overwhelmed and length are also not a proven fact. Many people get confused by what the casters are talking about, the terms and what all the units do, they don't get confused just because a game is "overwhelming" long. Maybe if you thought for a minute rather than blindingly defend your own incredible greatness of an opinion you would see that.

He didn't have to cram all the information in a 5 minute video, I'm saying the information that can be reasonably presented in 5 minutes is enough. People don't need to understand why delaying a hatch for 15 seconds is important. They need to have fun watching the game, and understanding will come in time. Which is why I object to TB's excessively long video, on grounds that it will scare off some people, and will overall not help as much as a 5 minute video.

Your posts in here are just so asinine.

Here we have a video of completely original content that addresses a different audience than sc2 content typically does. The length of the video serves to allow a new audience to see a complete game of sc2, which often takes 20-30 minutes.

And now we have you, objecting to the length of the video (completely thankless and unneccesarily negative, so youre off to a good start) because "it should only be 5 minutes"

do you see why youve got lk 5 people in here now, all telling you that youre wrong? its because you are.

Just watched it, very nice!
One very important aspect that is not explained (unless I missed it) and may not be obvious to viewers that have never played the game, is the "fog of war", the fact that the players cannot see what their opponent is doing. It's not chess, decisions are based on incomplete information!
