Fuck it, dibs first emo blog on LD.
So, today marks me spending three weeks on Long Island. My parents moved here in September, after we lived in quaint suburban Connecticut for about 10 years. I was already away at college when we moved, so I had no clue what the house was like when I first came back over break. Ho boy. We’re in a decidedly “meh” area on the Island. Crime rate is on the higher end, there’s not much to do besides go to the mall(s) and the only notable thing around is the local college where my dad works now.
The past time I spent here was about a week during winter break before I went back to CT to help out with some film and music stuff that some friends were doing. During that time, I mean, I kind of expected it to be bad. We were snowed in for most of the time and the roads were pretty terrible. NY is colder than NH at times, which is weird. Ocean breezes n shit I guess. I was able to check out the mall nearby. Pretty basic, mostly big box stores. Not many music stores, which was a disappointment. They were definitely catering to the wealthier suburbs north of here. I decided to check out Garden City and found basically the same thing at their commercial area/strip mall. Mostly expensive stores, typical “crafty” places that you find at those kind of places. Nowhere to chill and potentially meet people. The only upside to that week was going up to north end of the island for a SSBM tournament. Pretty good players, got destroyed. From the sounds of it, most of the the scene is on the opposite end of the island.
Came back from school and now I’m just kinda here. I’ve never really been in the situation of being in an entirely new environment without having some sort of catalyst (school, camp, etc) so that I could meet new people. Unfortunately, I really only know two people from my school that live here, and both of them are on other end of LI (and in addition to that, one of them hates me and the other one is a legitimately terrible person). So now I’m kind of stuck here with no real ways to meet people. Too young to go to bars, too broke to go to concerts (And fucking Mastodon/Gojira are hitting the city tomorrow).
I’m trying to find a job, (27 apps and counting), but until then I’ve just been sitting at home, playing Dota and writing. I used pretty much the last of my money to go down to CT last weekend to see friends, because I was so damn tired of the isolation. I’m trying to figure out ways to meet people, but I’m honestly at a loss. I feel trapped in my own house, defeated, and just kind of drifting. My debate coach from high school is spotting me some cash so I can come down to a polo game in two weeks, so I've got some good BBQ coming my way. Since I’m taking fall semester off, I’m here until January at least. Until that time, I guess I’ll just stay on this course.
I suppose there are some upsides. I’ve been able to play a lot of Dota, which is nice. I got back on the anime train after spring break cuz of a girl, so I’ve been making my way through some good shows (finally getting around to AngelBeats, you know, about 3 years too late). I’m unpacking all of my stuff from the move, though I did just find out that my parents forgot to pack my copy of Melee and apparently the cartridge for my turntable got lost. Pretty bummed about those not being here. Have been able to listen to some music also, so that’s nice (New Agalloch album soon!).
Funnily enough, the thing I kinda miss the most is going to the gym. I just started going this year, and was in a good rhythm. 5 days a week, losing some weight, putting on a good amount of muscle, fixing my posture, shoulder pains were going away. Unfortunately, I don’t have enough cash right now to afford a gym membership, so I’ve only been able to go when my parents go (about once a week). Losin my gains brah. Losin leg days like it’s nothing.
So this blog kinda sucked. I gotta get better at these. Iono, I’m still pretty tired. There’s a bright light in a parking lot right next to my window, and it goes through my blinds. Kinda throwing my sleep schedule out of wack. At least I have EU Hub to keep me entertained.
Here’s the list of albums that I’ve been listening to:
+ Show Spoiler +
Pinback - Summer in AbaddonPinback - Summer in Abbadon
Jawbreaker - Dear You
The World is a Beautiful Place and I am Ready to Die - Whenever, if Ever (Probably the only good band out of CT in ages. Hopefully they put some more material after they finish touring)
Bon Iver - For Emma Forever Ago (Because I still think it's 2010 or whatever.)
How To Destroy Angels - Welcome Oblivion
Out Among the Stars - Johnny Cash
Frank Ocean - Channel Orange
Frank Ocean - Nostalgia Ultra
The Weeknd - House of Balloons
Blink 182 - Take Off Your Pants and Jacket
Death - Individual Thought Patterns (The 2011 Remaster. I have both on LP, but the only good digital copy I could find was the '11 remaster. Not terribly drawn towards either one, they're both good. I dislike the drums a bit on this one, for some reason.)
Beck - Sea Change
Exivious - Exivious
Cynic - Traced In Air
Waylon Jennings - Dreaming My Dreams (I love The Highwaymen, so I decided I would give Waylon's solo stuff a shot. Not really a huge fan, but it was nice to have on in the background. Maybe he'll grow on me some more)
Clever Girl - No Drum and Bass In the Jazz Room
Wayne Szalinski - Audiotree Session
Macklemore - KEXP Performance (7/20/11) The energy and joy is so palpable (Definitely check out the 2/11/11 performances, way better. They never posted a full video of those, which saddens me. He does some of his better material then also)
Beach Fossils - Beach Fossils Definitely check out their live performances, way better. Their drummer adds a ton of flair, and even changes up his patterns entirely.
Dom McLennon - Thesis (Oh hey, I worked on this. We got on the front page of Complex and got in XXL, Noisey, and P&P. Shit was crazy.)
The Palisades - Map Distance/Ground Distance
Mogwai - Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will
Eagles of Death Metal - Peace, Love, Death Metal (Christ, I would kill to have the guitar tone on this album. So good.)
Eagles of Death Metal - Death By Sexy
Japandroids - Celebration Rock
This Will Destroy You - This Will Destroy You
And then just random Kpop playlists that I find and random episodes of TATW, Group Therapy and the Mat Zo Show

I might post the list of anime that I've been watching also. Iono, I'll see how long it takes me to finish this TL thing.
