The first episode of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion unfolds at
rollercoaster pace, leaving no time for the viewer to let the events sink in,
let alone reflect on them. I found myself having to pause frequently to keep up
with what was happening. Scores of characters are introduced (barely), most of
them walking clichés. Some High School Girls are shown just long enough to set
up for a high-school-lovey-dovey-harem-romance scenario. The Evil Tough Guy in
charge of the Imperial Royal Guard wouldn't convince a three-year-old. The main
character is a Fallen Prince with an Idiot Friend. The dialogue is stilted and
sometimes nonsensical (at least going by the translation), with cringeworthy
attempts at humor.

There is copious mecha (human-controlled robots and machines) pew-pew to spice
things up, adding "action". A Japanese quarter is wiped out in a Britannian
cover-up job in order to demonstrate the utter evil of the White Devils who now
rule the world and only have contempt for the noble Japanese. The plot is a
series of rather convenient coincidences, and every event, theme and character
crammed into the 24-minute duration has the subtlety of a sledgehammer.

The only thing Code Geass R1 E01 gave me was an urge to write this.

I haven't seen Code Geass, so I can't say for sure, but the chances are good that the translations screwed up a lot of things. Anime translations generally are pretty bad.

If this is your first anime, then it's no surprise you'd find it stupid. Most anime don't make much sense in a vacuum, they use certain genre-typical (genres within the medium anime, that is) elements over and over again, the real content lies behind that. You kind of have to learn how to watch anime.

And of course there are plenty of crap anime out there, no denying that. Just as with everything else. Not a reason to call them "kiddy-cartoons".
If you have a good reason to disagree with the above, please tell me. Thank you.

Well Code Geass is one of the most overrated piece of garbage animes out there, so i mostly agree with what you said. However there are some gems out there which avoid all the nonsensical and genre-typical anime bullshit. Like Mushishi or Logh

I always wondered what people like about Code Geass. Not only is it not all that great by itself, it's also aimed at girls. Not that Shoujo can't be entertaining or well-made, but it becomes weird when you're used to shounen using a similar style.

Also, IMO, the drawing style is not to my liking. That's what put me off Codea Geass at first. Still watched it and enjoyed it in the end.

And I'd say the scenes when the ladies suit up and get down into the robot, the show is definately Shonen.

After thinking it through more, I'd say that CG is half shonen half shoujo ^^

Yeah, most are kiddy like.
I have seen plenty and I just can't take any more anime where noone dies whatsoever, there is no personal relationship coherence(main character befriending everyone that tries to kill him after their villain arc is done) and stuff like that.
There are no consequences it feels like.

But occasionally you will find the odd Madoka, Steins Gate, Psycho Pass and you will enjoy them.
Plus if you are new to the genre you can always watch the classics and understand why so many people came to love anime.

its CLAMP! noodle people with Sunrise MECHA! YEAH! :D
Anyways itsjustatank totally nailed it already (even though i still enjoy bad anime just cuz I can sit back and just watch it for the mecha/fan service every once in a while)
>Madoka being good LOL
cuz anything that is grim dark (inb4 deconstruction gets used) is good now.
Also title is misleading I was thinking of doraemon as well since CG is mostly aimed that a slightly older age group.

Except the OP who is clueless about the subject noone else said that all anime are childish crap.
But the occasional gem like monster doesn't mean the opposite.

Heh, the title was just intended to draw attention I didn't expect it to be taken so seriously. I've watched some animes throughout the years.

Gintama, Monster, Madoka, Stein's Gate, Psycho Pass, Mushishi, Logh

Thanks, will check out.

That's pretty much THE most overhyped anime I could think of. I don't know the manga; maybe that one deserves the fame, but the anime... no idea what people like about it. I watched the whole thing just to maybe get it, but to no avail.

Watch Utena instead of Madoka :D
also Attack on Titan is ok for what it is.
Might as well ask the TL anime thread for their thoughts -- I mean they have that link breaks down what anime to watch -- which for the most part is really nice.

why isn't this on the general anime thread?

Since we're ranting about anime, here's my contribution:

I don't understand how some anime can get so repetitive. Last week I was watching this attack on titan, and it couldn't go 5 minutes without a throwing flashback to my face. And to make it worse, they even use the same scenes from 3 episodes ago.

So you end up with only 10 minutes of actual plot and 15 minutes of OP/ED and flashbacks with repetition of the same scenes. This is why I stopped watching most of the seinen I started to watch. Steins gate, although very slow plot-wise, was watchable.

For now I'll just stick to finger rolls and palmtop tigers.

The Titan anime is pretty much Neon Genesis Evengelion set in Berserk setting meeting Dragon Ball Z where you anticipate which character to have their super saiyan mode next.

Watch School Days though, you'll love it!

Code Geass is definitely not a kid's anime. Given you've only watched the first episode, I'll say that I think that Code geass is one of the animes with one of the stronger plots/stories and character developments in terms of anime.

I watched it. Both seasons. I have an informed opinion on this anime.
In short: They spent 25 episodes and still haven't gotten any story done yet. The plot is random and without a purpose. They constantly go around saying "this guy is so awesome for his skills in xyz" and then they try to prove that somehow, but it always ends up being stupid.+ Show Spoiler +
And did they really think killing the main character had any impact? It was obvious that he would be back. None of the other characters was able to carry any plot whatsoever.
It's just repetitive, lacking a real story, and the things that should impress me are just not set up in a way such that they could be impressive.

Code Geass is ok-ish anime, I didn't like it that much. It got popular mostly because the character design was attractive and it has robots and stuff.
It's basically gundam seed type of anime.

rahxephon imo is wayyyyyyy better in every way, proper romance, story line, music etc

I don't like the over the top animes like bleach and berserker. Making a character too much of a bad ass just makes it annoying. I liked monster but on a second viewing the plot just develops too slow and the characters gasp too much. I know it's weird and it's probably very normal in Japan but it annoys me for some reason.

avoid long-running shounen series like bleach and naruto, they are dumb and filled with countless fillers
avoid moe/harem crap, they are superficial and annoying

shows aired on noitaminA are usually good as they are more unique and tend not to contain shows filled with stereotypes
