I knew what this blog was about before opening it heh

If you didn't know the world championships just finished then you probably don't know enough about the pro scene or game to make much comment.

Still too bad you couldn't make the sc2 connectxion dpb

Korea used to be about StarCraft: Brood War and King Of Fighters. Now it's about grindy MMORPGS and moba games.

Edit: Also, what an "old man" moment that was. The kids were talking about games, you tried to join in, but they were talking about a new and shitty game, while you thought they were talking about an old one.

2nd edit: I know, I know - they're not "kids" because they're going to university. They are young adults. But still.

Korea is about LoL now. What the fuck is wrong with that? You seriously didn't expect bw to be played forever, right?

I don't mind that they switch games from time to time, but I do mind that the quality of the games they switched to is really low

Reminder that people forgot that BW wasn't the best looking game on the market at that time, neither was it the most strategically complex when it came out, yet people just hail it as the greatest game ever. Fucking hilarious.

When it came out, it was kind of bad. I played other RTS games at the time. But it got really good in 2001, and has been getting better since.

I think it's the best RTS game that exists now, and that it has been for a while. What is hilarious about that opinion?
Are you saying that LoL is going to get better in the future? It's existed since 2009. When StarCraft 1 was that old, it was already really good. Also, LoL is never going to stop being a moba game.

Wow, so many replies already

I'm glad most people recognized that my intention for this blog was to note my disappointment in not being able to make a Starcraft connection with my students, rather than bash LoL Congrats to SKT for winning LoL by the way.

+ Show Spoiler +
Yes, winning the entire game.

Also, what's wrong with nested spoilers? I find them useful when trying to set up a cliffhanger or a turn of events, as my peripheral vision tends to spoil punchlines (especially when the later paragraphs include bold or italicized font).

On the off-chance that any of my students are on TL next semester, I could very well introduce myself as Professor DarkPlasmaBall... although at least 95% of them won't get the joke, and then it'll just be awkward.

Is this a freshman class? kids these days... smh

Which math class is this?

Yes, it's a freshman precalculus class. It's for STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) majors too, so they're somewhat more motivated to learn math since they'll be using it in their higher courses, rather than the *other* precalculus class for *other* majors. My students will be taking at least one more math course after this one.

I think a more constructive strategy would be to implement Starcraft related word problems into my lectures.

For example, if you have ten zealots and you want to make four carriers, how many Protoss units will you have in all?

YOU MUST CONSTRUCT ADDITIONAL PYLONS.

One time I swear I heard a group of koreans talking about Kang Min, Park Sung Joon, "ultralisk", etc etc. I listened for a little bit just to make sure I wasn't hearing things. So I thought they were talking about starcraft, walked up to them and asked if they were, and they said "nah, oh this guy plays starcraft though!" but I didn't stay around to talk to them

anyways moral of my story is that korean males know something about esports, no matter how small!

ask them if skt best kt. if they answer incorrectly instantly fail them

Now that's something I might do.

Pretty much this. It's like asking a kid born in late 90's if they know Sinatra. It's a real shame that they don't but its not uncommon

Those kids would fail my class too.

No, I'm saying that it's funny that you're arguing about the merits of the "quality of the game", when BW was hardly the pinnacle of game quality when it was released. It's popularity had a lot to do with timing of release/packaged multiplayer/low system requirements, not because it was simply "the best game".

I was pleased to discover how easily and naturally my SKT fangirling in SC transitioned to SKT fangirling in League. I like cheering for winners, and of course it just so happened that SKT had the strongest team in Korea when I began watching Champions Summer. SKT dominates every game they touch, so i can always root for them and count on them. #1 esports franchise of all time. And theres always lots of cute, Korean boys. Although not Bisu, Piglet is still adorable <3

Anyway, even though the majority of new SKT LoL fans have little knowledge of its long history of Starcraft domination, I've found many are interested in learning about it. The article TL wrote for the Champions Summer finals detailing the SKT vs KT rivalry was pretty popular on Reddit. I'm always happy to share information about SKT to anyone interested and spread the fandom :D don't be so hard on them, just be willing to tell them more about this awesome team~

Don't know how you could mock LoL has "low quality", in comparison, when that's hardly the main metric that made BW was chosen as main esports in Korea.

God dammit DPB, why aren't I in your math classes?! You'd probably notice me on my phone in class, ask me to turn it off, then notice it is a Code S VOD from two nights before and I'm taking BO notes next to math notes. Then we could be best friends. Because math and Starcraft. I've done exactly that in class so many times and no one ever knows what I'm doing..

A similar thing to your situation happened to me late one night in dorms last semester actually (I just got an easy room in the dorms as a junior so I didn't have to apartment shop). Being in the dorms+being 4-5 years older than everyone else, I tended to stay out of everyone's way. Besides, my Code S, A, Proleague, and GSTL watching habits made it so I was rarely awake at the same times as anyone else. But then one day I was walking back to my room from the shower and one of my neighbors asked me what I was always playing all the time, quickly explaining that he could sometimes hear game sounds coming from my room (quickly adding that it didn't bother him or anything). I was mostly naked and had never talked to this guy before, so it was pretty damn awkward.
But I answered him anyway: "Oh, haha, sorry. That'd be Starcraft."
To which he replied: "OH! I thought it might of been League of Legends. My roommate and I play that all the time. Have you ever played it before? Isn't Starcraft like really old?"

"..."
Ya, it got more awkward.
"No, I haven't played LoL before, not really my style. I play mostly Starcraft 2, which isn't old. But I do play Starcraft: Broodwar from time to time, which is definitely old. 15 years old actually. And still fun to play and watch."
"Oh, ok. Cool. Maybe I'll look into it."
"Please do, it's the greatest game ever. Seriously. You ever want to play hit me up. A bunch of us here at school play all the time."

He never hit me up...

Are you saying that LoL is going to get better in the future? It's existed since 2009. When StarCraft 1 was that old, it was already really good. Also, LoL is never going to stop being a moba game.

No, I'm saying that it's funny that you're arguing about the merits of the "quality of the game", when BW was hardly the pinnacle of game quality when it was released. It's popularity had a lot to do with timing of release/packaged multiplayer/low system requirements, not because it was simply "the best game".

What's your point?

Don't know how you could mock LoL has "low quality", in comparison, when that's hardly the main metric that made BW was chosen as main esports in Korea.

I never said it was the reason BW got popular. Regardless of the reason, it is sad that shitty games are played rather than good ones.

Rather than shitty, why don't you say that it's a game you don't like? I mean, it's unlikely that the most played game in korean PC bangs would be that bad, I don't think the koreans have such low standards...

Hahahaha He missed out; not you! What's your math background/ major/ future profession?

If I can connect it to math, then that'd be awesome ^^

Maybe I should just warn them now that there'll be a pop quiz on Starcraft, worth 100% of their final grade, sometime in December... so they can start studying ^^

What school do you go to? Just wondering since I saw some guy watching some SC2 vods on GOM yesterday in the computer lab (or whatever it's called these days) but didn't say anything to them because I was short on time.
