I thought of bumping the "confession" thread from May 2013 but I decided to write this quick blog instead. If I'm lucky, the people who are concerned will stumble upon it. I'll make it quick and it'll be uninteresting.

A while ago, I was at a Barcraft event thing in Montreal at the now defunct club 1234. After the games, I was waiting for friends in the lobby as we were leaving, and a guy was being carried down the stairs by another guy. I jokingly said "you guys are so cute " because I thought they were having drunken fun or whatever. In my defense, I was a little tipsy.

Anyway, I feel bad because when I got outside, I noticed that the guy that was being carried in the stairs was now sitting in a wheelchair... fuck. :X. I didn't have the courage to go apologize, partly because it was pretty loud in there and I'm not sure they heard me in the first place. If they hadn't, it would just be strange for me to come up...

So to whoever is concerned: I'm sorry. I want you to know that for one I didn't know, but also there was no malice in what I said. Please trust me when I say that it wasn't my intention to mock anybody.

Also if you know those guys, let them know about this!

----You can stop reading ----
On a completely different and unannounced topic which has nothing to do with anything (I know you guys are bored).

Yesterday morning I woke up around 7AM feeling excruciating pain in my right eye. I was sleeping, then I woke up and life sucked. It felt like I had a piece of sand in my eye or something, but 10x worse, and I couldn't stop the pain by closing my eye. My body's reflex apparently was to blink incessantly, until it stabilized after 2-3 minutes, but it was still really painful.

Luckily for me I happened not to be alone that morning. This is a big deal because I require backup to use eyedrops because I'm kind of a pussy for those kinds of things.... the idea of putting eye lenses freaks me out (yay for 20/20... for now). Anywho so the eye lubricant thing helped a lot but I was still blinking 3x more than usual.

I was much better but it's my f***ing eye and doctors are free so fuck it, I went to the crazy communist free clinic. She used some orange colored thing in my eye which I believe helps to see little cuts in the cornea or something and tried some stuff but couldn't find anything wrong with it. She said if it doesn't get better by (today), to use some antibiotic drops, that I just got around to use now for the first time (not without help!). Maybe it'll do the trick... but then again, even the doc seemed to prescribe it just because it couldn't really hurt to use antibiotics even though she doesn't know what it is.

Yesterday night before going to bed in the dark, I noticed that the little weak night light had a strange glow around them, which disappeared when I closed my right eye. So my vision is (or was) altered in some way. I didn't get to tell the doctor this detail. Also, I've been really sensitive to light to the point where I'm tempted to wear an eye patch.

I wouldn't usually write about this shit and I understand that it's kind of mundane but at the same time, these things are my eyes, they're kind of a big deal... <3 eyes. It's probably nothing but it's scary anyway, even now. It's funny to me because it was the fastest turnaround time for me for any medical issue... I'd probably sit on a cancerous lump for months after noticing it but I'll move mountains for my eyes.

I may be going to the optometrist tomorrow unless it's noticeably better when I wake up. In the bus on my way home, I was literally covering my eye with my hand... Sucks

Anyway cheers.

Definitely go to the optometrist (I assume different than the communist-free-clinic you spoke of before?) and get yourself checked out. That's very important. I am very interested to hear about your diagnosis as I have a couple guesses myself (though I am in no way qualified to make a diagnosis myself yet, nor would I do so online). Can you update this blog after you get checked out?

Yes it's a different practice, I went to a generalist, and tomorrow I may go to an optometrist if I'm not better... Although maybe I should go either way given the circumstances, even though the antibiotics could turn out to do the trick. I feel like I don't want to mess around. Plus they're off over the weekend and I'm busy all day on mondays so if it's not tomorrow it has to wait until tuesday (or I'd have to wait at the hospital for an entire day).

Anyway I'll let you know if I find out.

First part: So you are confessing that you think guys are cute? I think you may be a homosexual.

Second part: I advise you not to listen to WaveofShadow, the "future optometrist." Shame on you, sir, for giving medical advice without credentials. As a former future MD, my professional advice would be to see a therapist because you have hypochondria.

@WaveofShadow: I went to the optometrist, and apparently what I've got is called corneal edema. Still unsure how it happened. She gave me regular eye drops and told me to use them when needed, and she prescribed something called Muro 128 to use for nighttime so the surface of my cornea will heal properly.

Interesting. They didn't give you an underlying cause huh?
I'm assuming they checked your pressures and angles?

No, I think it looked fairly minor from her perspective. She just looked at it with a bunch of different lights which made my eye tear up like crazy. As for how it could have happened, she said maybe I rubbed my eye too much at night or kinda "swiped" it against my bed sheets which could have damaged it or something. And now the scar tissue is rubbing against my eyelid and it's imperfect which would explain the strange "glow" I see, because light gets deformed by the cornea or something. I dunno. It was brief, she kind of squeezed me between two patients.

If there was scar tissue and the first place you went said there was nothing wrong that explains why I was confused. I'm guessing the lesson is that other place you went to is probably shit (especially if they gave you antibiotics without even being able to diagnose anything).

I went there all my life, I don't think they are bad, and my understanding is that the antibiotic drops were kind of a placebo/precaution or something. That said, the generalist didn't have much in terms of eye equipment. In fact, the optometrist seemed to think that it would heal up on its own but I should use the Muro 128 to prevent the scar tissue from breaking apart when I open my eyes in the morning.

Meh, guess I'm quick to judge, There are different schools of thought as to when antibiotics should or shouldn't be used.

In any case, happy you got everything dealt with!

They probably just didnt want anything in the eye become infected over night since they as a general clinic didnt have the instruments and knowledge to exclude it.

This blog doesn't talk about the part where I'm only alive because of many years of consulting multiple cardiologists who, when I was a kid, referred me to a cardiothoracic surgeon who repaired one of my heart valves which caused a bunch of problems and would likely have resulted in a premature death.

These are consults and a surgery which my parents couldn't possibly have afforded on the US healthcare system when I was a kid. I owe my life to the Canadian socialized medical system, not only for the multiple consults with cardiologists and my surgery with a surgeon, but also because of the followup care and some prescription drugs and the various adjustments that were done to my prescriptions by more doctors.

The US system would have, in all likelihood, let me die to a birth defect because I was a worthless lower-class child. Canada saved my ass and my mother then became a successful entrepreneur.

Now I went to an optometrist for $25 and I know that my eyes are safe. And odds are, if my sight was in any danger, my generalist doctor would have referred me to an ophthalmologist in a nearby hospital, who would have been able to help me very quickly on an emergency consult.

So no, socialized medicine doesn't fail, at least not nearly as much as a market driven medicine which BTW allows the US to have third-world level infantile mortality.
