There's some serious construction work going on in the street here so my car is parked in a nearby street. Today, I walked out of my house to get to an appointment and there was a cable blocking my way, about knee height. On the other side of the cable, there was the curb, 2 feet high because there are "trenches" on either side which will likely be filled in the next days

Armed with my infinite wisdom, I think "this cable is in my way, I shall jump over it". Onto the curb and then onto the street, at which point I would walk to my car. I executed myself, at which point my foot just went straight through the fucking curb, which hadn't set. Fabulous. That's what the cable was all about, it turns out. My foot went through 2 feet of soft concrete, digging a massive gap into the curb.

My neighbor, who's one of those front porch people, was just chatting away with the construction guys, happened to see me jumping into the soft concrete. "Oh... you shouldn't have done that", he said. Turns out he's a better man than I, and dropped some intel at me like it was nobody's business. Too embarrassed to think of anything, I probably just sounded very exasperated, with my guilty as fuck face. I don't think I said much. My neighbor is a dick but at that point in time, I was the biggest moron ever.

At that point I don't know wtf to say and I'm walking toward my car which happens to be on the other side of the guys who presumably had just made the curb all nice and flat. One of the guys saw the mess I made and just looked disappointed. I can't imagine what he thought of me, nor do I want to. I walked by them and just said "I'm really sorry guys". I was in a hurry, I would generally have offered to help fix the damages, being fully aware that they would have said no. It's not like I could anyway, I don't know much about curbs in general. I just said I'm sorry guys, and continued walking.

I continued walking, feeling like even more of an asshole. I destroy their work, then walk past them and just say I'm sorry. It's like I'm mocking them or something. I was an aristocrat walking by my plebs as far as they could tell. "Sorry guys, I destroyed your curb. Back to work now!"

I think that's when I truly peaked in the department of socially awkward penguin. And now I'm about to go sleep, remorseful, feeling like a dick.

I don't know why I'm posting this here, perhaps it'll turn out to be therapeutic. I told a buddy who told me his story which blew mine out of the water. Admittedly, it made me feel better. But I'm still a god damn moron. I still am trying to convince myself that I was an idiot because I was in a hurry and had a lot of my mind, but even then... for fuck's sake. -_-

What's even more annoying is that my neighbor, who's a complete imbecile, happened to catch me being a dumbass twice in the last 2 months. I barely know him, but now he has to think I'm literally mentally challenged. Fuck.

Good night

LOL I did that with hot tarmac when i was younger. Left my house and just started walking down my road with my buddy, oblivious to the workers telling me to watch myself, then screaming STOP STOP NO NO.

5 footprints in their tarmac later, they said some not-so-nice things to 9 year old me, i probably could have sued them or some shit for child abuse lol. Although i didnt because i was a complete dickweed for not realising i was going to fuck up their days work (and then did ).

--

But yeah, that was pretty silly dude Dont feel guilty, it was an accident, shit happens and im sure those workers (eventually) got over it and understood it wasnt intentional. I mean, they probably think your an idiot though xD

Analyzing it too deeply lol. You made a mistake and apologized. But honestly that is pretty hilarious you stepped knee deep into concrete. Derrrrrp!

Also, god damnit, you really should not have let him catch you making two mistakes in two months. He probably thinks you're human or something now. Yeek

Should have brought them a 6-pack or 2. It's soothing the anger of the manual worker for centuries.

Come on, it wasn't that bad.

Imagine your leg got stuck in the concrete and there would be a fat man in a tuxedo and with a cigar, hiding behind the corner, cuddling his cat and deftly giving orders to his four acquaintances about suitable, isolated areas in you home city's harbor.

fuck it, I have so much rage against construction workers in general anyway, I wouldn't be remorseful. They set up and start pneumatic drilling at like 8am, the fuckers. When you are trying to have a lie in it ruins everything.

Accidents happen man. You apologized, and that is the best you can do since you probably do not have the skills (nor authority) to fix it. I think you can move on without feeling too bad about yourself. And yeah if you really want to make it better, bring them a 6-pack if they're still working there tomorrow. They would probably appreciate that.
When you came along so righteous with a new national hate, so convincing is the ardor of war and of men, it's harder to breathe than to believe you're a friend. The wars at home, the wars abroad, all soaked in blood and lies and fraud.

If I were your neighbor I probably would have laughed at witnessing that >.> But accidents happen; you're clearly sincere about feeling bad. Don't let it ruin your week

Just look before you walk straight into knee deep concrete next time, ok?

No, since it was just basically a ledge, I barely had any on me. My foot just pushed the concrete away from both sides of my leg. I had a small smudge on the side of my leg that I mostly wiped off in my car. Also had some on my shoes, which luckily were already on their way out.

That is certainly one of the various things that went through my mind when I tried to not feel like such a dick.
Around here, the construction business is corrupt as hell, too. But that's because of their boss, not the guys themselves.

These guys are not getting paid extra for the 3 minutes of patchwork they had to do because of me either. And they're just normal people working when they're told.

Pretty concrete example of an embarrassing mistake, but I feel like perhaps the enormity of your error hasn't cemented in your mind just yet. If I were you, I'd go and gravel at their feet for forgiveness. It's your asphalt, after all.

Geez man, don't beat yourself up about it. No way you could have known. The fact that the construction guys didn't go off at you shows they understood that.

Sounds embarrassing as fuck though.

Edit: 6-pack is a good idea though.

haha brilliant!

OP, I can see why you would be embarrassed. Note for next time, just touch it a smidge if you think it might be wet before you step on it lol. Having said that, it's a mistake and happens to everyone so I wouldn't worry although making mistakes infront of your 'complete imbecile' neighbour, well, that's a different boy.

Well I usually would make sure, but at the time it didn't even occur to me. I was just in "move forward" mode.

Also, many people have suggested bringing some beers and that's a great idea, but there are like 30 guys out there working on various things at various times. I don't think I can track the right guys, especially since it's hard to move around out there and I'm constantly at risk of damaging public property.

zapz all I can say is I really enjoyed your story, and I don't think you should make too much of it. The whole thing just sounds like a funny accident more than a serious boneheaded error that caused the plebians a lot of trouble .

As does your relationship with your dum-dum neighbour. You guys sound like you're going to have a quirky, entertaining relationship!

Also I really appreciated those paint pictures...its so much easier to understand what happened with them. Most of us are visual learners after all. To be honest I don't think its too socially awkward to say what you said. But then again I'm kind of socially awkward lol. Oh well...the good news is with time everything fades. So you can look forward to that (a week from now)

I get to think of a line from a movie from this. Its something like: ''no matter how many bad things you do you never think of yourself as a bad person''

Im not trying to say (at all) that youre a bad person, and i really dont think this is incident is such a big deal, I just find it interesting that you bring it up, and I think that it is quite healthy for youre personality to think about events like this. I mean, if you would behave differently should you be put in a similar situation, then it shows great charachter imo.

Also I think that you(as in people in general) should try to define yourself from your actions rather from what your subconciousness tells you. (dont know if that made sense at all...) Dont underestimate the power of denial!! =)

Anyways, I really liked your blog. =)
