Hello Female,
our relationship is pretty good. We get along for the most part, enjoy viewing movies and musicals, and live in the same town. However, our time away from each other while I went on multiple vacations this summer showed me that I don't want a long distance relationship. While we could maintain the relationship, I don't want to with you going off to college. I sincerely enjoyed all of my time with you, but for your and my sake I think we should break up.

My girl of 7 months is soon to be not my girl, by my choice. Honestly, there is a line of thought in my mind that has shown itself that my girl has low self esteem and acts in ways i strongly dislike at things like prom. She also is, probably again relating to her low self esteem, not that interesting or strong minded. Her family is rough, yells at each other a lot. Her mom is a psycho alcoholic on weekends stay at home. They do say the mom is what the girl becomes. Overall, I could break up with her for personality reasons.
But if I choose to be in a good and especially charismatic mood, we work wonderfully together. If I feel lazy, she cuddles and fawns over me.
That's not enough.
Recently, I found myself arranging our hangouts around eating, movies, or musicals(okay, my mom surprise bought us tickets, I'm not rich enough to just go to musicals). Primarily because I don't want to hang out with her 1 on 1 or with one of our families. I want it to be done.
I think the way I'm doing it is the nice way. It will be good for her to go into freshmen year of college single, and I experienced many enjoyable moments. I don't want a bitter, heartbreaking breakup. However, I want to break up.
I'll update tomorrow to tell how it goes if anyone is interested.
Any questions/comments on the relationship as I described it, or in my "rough draft" of how I'll break up with her in person?

Is that what I sound like? Ouch. Oh well...? I do want to break up with her. Any way I can be less of an asshole about it or is it just the nature of breaking up?

It's rough, but you've just gotta do it. The long-distance thing is definitely an issue, but moreover, if your personalities clash, that's a bigger problem. There's nothing wrong with breaking up with someone just because you realize you don't match. And even though some people react horribly (subtly noting my past gf here) and go crazy and hate you forever and blame you for billions of things you didn't do...the fact of the matter is that it's perfectly legitimate to break up for a reason like that.
And some people just need to grow up.

One of my chick friends recently had her boyfriend break up with her, here's how he did it:
"I Haven't loved you for 6 months, we're done." and he did it with his best friend present, so that she couldn't retaliate.
Don't do that. she cried for hours and he looked like the biggest dick. Do it politely, in person, and in private.

One problem, girls love assholes. 
If your not happy, break up and get it over, the longer you take, the worse it gets. Your idea looks fine, just be sure you do it like a man, face to face. This breaking up over letters/sms/emails/twitter is just lame.

Haha. Yeah, I dunno why young people have to make such an ordeal out of anything having to do with a relationship. You don't have to write a script for how you're gonna break up and there's no sense in going over how good the relationship WAS and how you COULD stay together...

In public reduces the chances of her going flat out screaming Siren mode calling you all sorts of names for no reason, whereas in private she can feel safe to verbally and psychologically abuse you, especially if you live together.

that is true, but it's still pretty shitty to do that to someone in public and presumably, even though you don't wanna date that person any longer, you probably have some respect for them. Would you wanna be dumped in that fashion??

I would say it's ok to break up with someone on the phone, not via text or written letter. Just give yourself some guidelines and points you need to make before the talk and stick to them. Make sure it is understood that it is over, and don't do any maybe/iffy stuff. And ignore her attempts at contact. If you need to get stuff back from her, wait a month or so and keep it civil and brief.
Last girl I broke up with was in a shitty way and I felt terrible about it, but it got the point across.
