I don't think that the internet is a very healthy place to be at this point in time. It is filled with negativity and paranoia and so many things, and the mob mentality behind it is so very corrupting. It seems like every day I can log in, look at what is going on and be so upset at so many things. Whether it's the NSA, big pharm, banks, SC2 dying, bilderberg group, obama, or any number of other things... and whenever I read these things I get upset at what I am reading, and have a deep sense of hopelessness.
It is like, I read all of this and feel that something is building up to a big event that will happen. Yet, at the same time nothing will happen from that event. Nothing will change. It is to the point where I would rather be oblivious and ignorant to what is happening in favor of living my own life.
Does anybody else feel the same way?

You know, for everything negative that you are reading, there are equal things positive. It is important to keep that in mind.

I would suggest not reading news. I had a period where those made me depressed since the majority of large headlines are depressing. Normal surfing was still fine for me, I just avoided all news sites/articles/posts.

I'm sorry but I find avoiding this type of stuff terribad advice to say the least. In the psychology realm avoiding things that you will be confronted with the rest of your life in some way is not the way to go. In fact it' s the worst advice one can give since it makes you even more sensitive to even less disturbing news over time. I'd give you the advice to seek help if you are depressed by these types of things, because it' s not the news itself directly that makes one feel hopeless, it's your brain chemistry that triggers these emotions.
Luckily you can train your brain in how you respond to news.
Also try to notice if you tend to give special attention to negative news, and adjust this behavior (even though it's not easy).

This sounds a lot like the beginning of a conversation between two men whom are alone 2am at a bar.

Put your fingers in your ears and start shouting LALALALALALA
Is this what you are saying ?

you can go with your "ignorance is bliss" approach if you want

I can't control things so I don't let them bother me. I just move on to whatever the next thing I am doing on the Internet and my mood / mindset changes accordingly pretty quickly.

Internet is an amazing thing, but can be quite counter-productive from time to time. It's true that avoiding news and similar sites would not be very effective, but I do believe that cutting down time spent on surfing can be very rewarding. I recommend finding other things to do in those extra pockets of spare time that often end up being spent in front of the screen. If something doesn't feel good, try something else!
