Hey TL, I didn't write this yesterday so I could space out my blogs, I don't want to spam the blogs section, so at the most frequent I'll write one every 3 or so days so 2 to 3 times a week maximum. This is a blog on something I witnessed at a movie theatre (no it wasn't one of the multitude of blowjobs lol) that made me think hard about who I am and what I perceive.

Looking at a Man of Steel

I saw Man of Steel two days ago. While I was in the movies, I recognized several people in the theatre, and I'm sure some of them recognized me too. While I was sitting outside, reading, not exactly the most normal activity to do outside of a place to do the antithesis of reading, I saw a kid I knew from tennis. He goes to a small Christian school/Church combo in Cordova. I think its Presbyterian. He was in the Man of Steel movie with me. Of course, he was no where near me, but after my group of friends was kicked out of every row because there was always one person who said the common, "OH NO, don't, sorry I'm saving it for my family," or even when pressed, "NO I haven't seen them in 30 years and I know i'm like 12 but still." After my friends started bitching at me for not getting better seats - they sent me early to be the sacrificial lamb, and grab some prime seating, but I was turned away at the door by the attendant; I wasn't allowed to go in because they were cleaning, and I wasn't about to stand at the door of a movie that I was only their to see to be with my friends - So, in the end, I was a row behind the guy.

He didn't recognize me, but, then again, I didn't expect him to. I played varsity tennis and so did he, but I never played him, I just knew his face, no name or anything to go with it. I didn't push it, I didn't say hi, I didn't wave, I didn't do anything that could be construed as a greeting. The movie started rolling, I put my book in my lap, stole a couple Reese's candy pieces after tearing a slit in the bag so whoever had the bag could pour some pieces out, and watched my friend, unhappy with the size of the slit, pull hard enough on it that the bag burst and the candy went flying. So much for the Reese's is what I thought while chuckling. The movie began, and the beginning was great. It wasn't breathtaking, and it certainly wasn't perfect, but it had a charm to it and a novelty to it all its own. I see the tennis kid in front of me, and he looks fine. He's there with his family: there is a brother, a mother, a father, and maybe a sister, I couldn't tell if it was a sister or his brother's girlfriend. Everything is going well, I get sucked into the movie and I basically enter that state when the movie takes over all of one's attention to the point that making stupid quips about the movie meets with silence from everyone in the theatre. Crickets, one might say.

After the first half of the 143 min movie finishes, I realize that the second half is really god-awful, and not nearly as touching/well scripted as the first, so I come out of that delirium. When the haze fades, I see that the kid is entranced by the movie still, so is his entire family actually, and now my friends are making stupid jokes all over again - yeah I was too though, so I can't really bag on them too much for it, even though it's bad movie etiquette - and I realize I won't be enthralled for much longer by the movie. The amount of pure white in the movie threw me off even more than the awful scripting of:

Louis: "You know they say it's all down here after the first kiss," - Panting, looking like she just had a mouth orgasm
Superman: "I think that only applies to humans" - Looking calm, cool, and collected despite the fact he is outnumbered by enemies with as much godlike power as he has

Jesus that was painful to hear.

The end of the movie rolls about, and the final, actually somewhat well created scene rears up. We can all tell it's about to end. Superman has Zod in a half-nelson and Zod, now able to use heat vision, which he has only used once by this point (apparently he mastered it in 30 minutes), is attempting to fry up a meal of American-Asian family with said heat vision. Zod says a line akin to sour-grapes and then Superman says, "NOOOOO!" and breaks Zod's neck. At this point, the kid in front of me begins to cry; I don't notice it immidiately though, it hits me later. Around the time the lights come back, I see the kid in front with his brother laughing and him saying something brotherly like, "shut the hell up fag," or maybe less vulgar, I don't know, I just know that feel. His mom chuckles, which is kind of mean, and the father tells both of them to quiet using the Southern Father approach of "the look." The kid continues to cry a bit as the credits roll down.

I don't know if he was scared by the movie, or if he had actually found some kind of providence. I just thought, "Damn, that's so cool, this kid found someone to look up." While Superman has been the literal perfect person, and a common role-model for 'Murikan kids, I thought it was cool for any kid, my age or older or younger, not that age matters, to find a hero. One thing I've always longed for is a hero, but I'm probably too cynical too put that much faith into one person. He found some kind of an ideal to replicate, a man of valor. Though, I guess some believe that replicating an impossible ideal is stupid, my girlfriend is of that opinion, and based upon what girls these days deal with, that is a completely valid point; I thought it was cool in general that he was able to find any kind of hero to replicate, considering the world I see has little to replicate, and a lot to shun.

Thanks for reading guys.

EDIT: I suck, it's Zod. Credit to Wo1f for saving me from that .

So basically Superman is some kind of dark, brooding, arrogant asshole now? Somewhat more of an anti-hero? I could have sworn DC already had a really popular hero like that... What was his name... Ah, it'll come to me later.

Poor kid.

I agree with your point on the second part being not as good as the first. I think Man of Steel is the first movie that became over-stimulating for me while watching it and I had to break away to refocus.

I thought the same thing about that kissing scene, though the speech Zod gives before the final battle was kinda weird also. The one where he's saying stuff about being raised a warrior and only existing for Krypton and that without his people he's nothing. It just seemed extremely transparent what the writers wanted the audience to conclude about raising perfect babies and the ability to grow up into anything instead of into a predetermined role.

Yeah everyone was thinking they'd do it again based on having seen the trailer, and they weren't too far off apparently lol

Hm I've been seeing a lot of movies lately and I'm not sure whether I should see superman because I'm definitely going to see monsters already hm.

I didn't get as much of that as I got a kid tortured by an impossible choice and a world around him that cannot accept him. I didn't think he was much of an asshole though, he was very serene... until he destroyed that guy's truck for being a dick and pouring beer on him.

Question: do you think the family was saved or not?

Because I've heard from some people they were, and some they weren't. Saw The Purge instead of Man of Steel yesterday, so I couldn't check myself (by the way, if you want some really bad writing, The Purge should do more than whet your appetite).

...Isn't it "Lois"? Or is Superman gay in the movie? (I haven't seen it yet.)

Also, glad to hear you play tennis I played back in high school, and I currently teach tennis at country clubs during the summer. What number singles/ doubles were you?

I was the last seed on our team. I should have put more time into playing, but my team coach wasn't really a player, just a school-kid dad who enjoyed the sport. The years before we had a drunkard who made fun of us, and then a coach who threatened to beat us and send us to the "Nigerian mafia." I should have taken more outside lessons . I was number 5 singles for my team, I vaccilated between #6 and #4 singles. If I played doubles I would be #2 doubles if I was needed to play. I mispelled Zod already, so I bet it's Lois lol, I'm really bad with movie names ._., but aside from all that I'm impressed that you coach at a country club. Usually those coaches were prime players back in the day. Were you a nationally ranked player in your "younger" (I use that term very loosely) days?

Yeah they got saved, they run away afterward IIRC. Was the purge good?

I did not enjoy The Purge. It was really boring because every scene was quite predictable. Too much foreshadowing for its own good.

I really liked Now You See Me, and I thought The Great Gatsby was pretty good too

I actually never spent time playing in official tournaments outside of school and the tennis clinics I went to, so I never achieved a particular ranking. I played first doubles and then eventually third singles on varsity in high school. Our team was pretty good and had a deep line-up as far as talent went, but I don't consider myself a phenomenal player. I did well in counties and qualified for states, but I teach more than I play nowadays. I do still love the game I certainly know the game and mechanics, and I can quickly identify problems and coach well (as an educator and tutor, I find that my strategies for instructing math students carry over pretty well into teaching tennis)

This. The characters are also the dumbest people I've seen in a movie in recent memory and I've watched a lot of poor horror movies lately. The crowning moment of dumb was probably + Show Spoiler +
deciding not to abandon a man to die...but not untying him.

They should have just made a mockumentary of a news report the day after the purge.

Agree, the Purge was a movie with (what I thought) a really unique premise but overall a really boring, predictable story and it just wasn't scary.

Sorry to hear Man of Steel wasn't as good as you expected. I don't know that I'll see it, but I am looking forward to seeing the World War Z movie as I've read the book and found it quite good.

Did you decide where you were going to University, Doc? I played Varsity tennis for 4 years in high school and just graduated from college where I led the Club team. Do you plan to continue playing?

Edit: I'm dumb, I just scrolled through your recent posts and found that you're going to UMiami. Good school. Do you know if they have a club team? We played both UFlorida and Georgia at Nationals this year, lost to Florida in the semis by one game and then they lost to Georgia in the finals, so I know the talent is there.

At this point I'm actually going to Rhodes, I should really write a blog about that, to stop confusing people. I'll be brief about it. I got to miami, I had an awful time of it on campus. The area around it, Little Havana, was like paradise in Cuban form. I had a personal argument in my head about being faithful to my gf and realized I could be faithful in Miami if I just kept my pants zipped and my mouth dry, so I thought Miami is it. Then I thought about the money, I visited Rhodes for a tour, and I realized that I was going to be at Rhodes for the first semester anyways, so unless I hate it, I should stay there. I might go to grad school in Miami though, and maybe Culinary school there. I loved that place, but not the school. Seems like you're a great player at tennis, I can't say that I am haha. I know they do have a team, though they aren't huge like their baseball team is. I'm going to play intermural tennis at Rhodes for a bit, that or Varsity if I'm good enough, but I plan on intermural so I can do Kickboxing and Soccer as well + other activities. Tell me how WWZ goes, I'm not gonna see it cuz I'm not into that stuff as much.
