i think there are about equal ratios of shitty to good fanfics as there are shitty to good published stories.
of course, the shitty fanfics tend to be really, really shitty.

I guess my question is if you think authors are going to start capitalizing on the fanfic market then, video game dev style.
Rowling alone would stand to make big bucks. George R.R. Martin could too, I'm sure.

IIRC George Martin hates fanfics and thinks it's abuse of his copyright, so that's not going to happen.
Either way it would mean the author would make those often terrible stories something official, which can harm their work more than benefit them. The whole sharing of profits could be pretty awkward. Fanfics shouldn't be sold, that's not their point. If it gets there you are selling something someone else created.
If the author actually creates "DLC short stories", that would be something completelly diferent.

I think authors dealing with fanfics has some interesting parallels to game devs and mods. Game devs turned mods into huge sources of revenue by doing them themselves and calling it DLC. Will authors do the same?
+ Show Spoiler +Sidebar: Anne Frank and Goku: Till the End of Time is still canon in my heart.

The companies often just hire the creator and make a similar game. The actual content of the previous game, if it's not owned by the same company or public property, is never replicated, just the gameplay elements.
As an analogy, fanfics take the characters from a certain story and create another story. Mods made into games create another very similar story using diferent characters. It's more like doing something like turning Pocahontas into Avatar. It's the same thing but you are not using copyrighted content.
I can't think of mods turned into actual DLCs, but maybe I just don't know of any.
