I've been kind of in gaming limbo for a while now. I stopped playing League of Legends because I hate how much coordination is required and how little of it you get when playing. I kinda stopped playing StarCraft 2 just because the game stresses me out and that's the last thing I need when I get home after a full day of work. Minecraft has become dull to me, and I can't really get into Black Ops 2 either. Tried going back to WoW and couldn't get past level 8 without remembering every single thing that was going to happen until I hit max level, old content. I tried going back to Diablo 3 with a new character only to be reminded that I hate dungeon crawling the same content repeatedly.
On Thursday, I was talking to my friend and I he was saying that if I like grand strategy games that I should check out Civilization V. I looked at some YouTube videos and I felt overwhelmed by all the management that I had to plan for - I loved it. I bought it off steam and started playing right away. All of Thursday after work, dedicated to Civ5.
Friday, I played against all day after work. Saturday I woke up early and played for about 14 hours, taking 2 small breaks for lunch and dinner, and then like 2 bathroom breaks, briefs alt-tab moments to look things up. Sunday I played for about 13 hours, same situation.
Then Monday came by and I really wanted to play some more. I had some paid time off saved up and decided to use some of that to play. Again, another all day session.
I don't know what it is about this game, but I absolutely love it. I love how much stuff I have to manage. I love how there are multiple paths to victory and there are different ways that other people can stop you. I love the combat. I love the tech. I love voice acting. I love this game.

It's a bit different, but I would also check out the Total War games. You get a pretty awesome turn based grand strategy game kinda like Civ, but you also get to actually fight all the battles in real time.

Yea, I primarily play grand strategy games myself with an occasional RPG or general strategy game thrown in. Started with Civ 3 back in the day and of course Civ 4. Civ 5 is good, but after playing Europa Universalis 3 the mechanics felt too abstracted. That's the next step for you, Paradox titles like EU3 or Crusader Kings 2(and then after that it's their Hearts of Iron or Victoria series). They're more detailed and specific to certain eras, but might be a little too historical for you.

This is one of those games that I repeatedly come back to play every 2-3 weeks or so. My ultimate wish would be if Civ would be turned into a workable and full fledged RTS.
