Levi's: Why are they so popular?

For the international TLers who might not know, Levi's are pretty much "the" jean company in America and I've never quite understood why. Maybe they just don't fit me personally, but I've never been very impressed with their offerings or the quality of their denim... I'm a skinny guy and I've tried 507s (slim boot, discontinued), 510s (super skinny), 511s (skinny), 513s (slim), and 514s (slim straight). I've also tried their pants (khaki and more dressy) and one common thing I've noticed with all of them is that they all make me feel like I have a wedgie, and they're just stiff and not very flexible. Even their "stretch" denim (jeans that are 99% cotton/1% something like spandex or lycra) aren't nearly as giving and just don't feel nearly as comfortable as stretch jeans from other companies.

It's just so odd to me because I've owned about 10 pairs of Levi's pants and I've ended up disappointed with every single one. They usually feel fine in the store when I buy them, but they end up shrinking oddly or fitting weird after a wash and then they just languish in my closet for months until I decide to sell them. Maybe it's just me having an odd body shape or something (I seem to have an extra two inches in my waist compared to every other guy my size; I weigh 145 lbs [that's about 66 kg) and I'm 5'9" [about 175cm]), but I have a 33 inch waist.)

What are your guys' experiences with Levis?

They're the reason why I hated jeans for a good 12 years or so.

I've started to finally wear a pair of jeans. Working out my traumatizing discomfort from wearing Levi's as a kid.

It's just a fashion label man. Stupid people with no brain or personality learn what brands are popular so that they can all buy them and feel better about themselves, whilst at the same time they can look down their noses at anyone who doesn't spend a ridiculous amount of money.

Levi's is well known in Europe and Asia. I actually like 'em. They're good quality for the cheap price, at least in the USA. Mine usually last for at least 2 years or so before I buy another pair. If you want to gripe about something, how about true religion jeans. $250? Really now?

I have one pair of levi's (501's) and they're absolutely fantastic. I got em marked down, perfect fit and made of durable material. I really like how they go down the leg, I gym and a lot of jeans that fit comfortably around my thighs are too baggy at the ankle, these are just right. Plus they haven't faded at all, the wind doesn't cut right through them and they look great. Got em for 30 bucks, favorite pair of jeans. I'm gonna get another pair or two this weekend. I guess for reference I'm 5'9 170, 31 waist.

iunno, they fit me; my favorite pair/best fit is probably a 514 levi slim straight fit jean that I have. I get like 32 waist 32 length pairs of jeans (~6'0 or ~182 cm tall) and they easily last a good 3-4 years for to $30-50 that they cost.

it's probably just me having absurdly large hips and a big ass for guys lol. the fact that I'm 25 pounds lighter than you and yet, I manage to have a two inch bigger waist... oh well?

170lb 31 waist suggests a fairly muscled upper body. I'm 140lb 30 waist, more of a runner than a lifter. Doing some squats will help you fill out the thighs in your jeans, if you really need to fit your jeans nicely.

Levi's are good denim for how cheap they are. You're crazy.

does anyone have any reliable statistics on average waist size compared to height and weight? I legitimately feel like I have lady hips.

What are you talking about man Levis are pretty much the best deal on jeans you can get, not expensive at all (compared to other big name jeans)

The quality is nice, often offer a lot of different style with different colours.
They also last pretty long and don't lose out the colours as quickly as some other brands.

I have a few levi's jeans that lasted 6 years and still looking great

maybe it's just because I'm a super bargain hunter, but I can usually find better denim for less. lately I've been wearing a lot of matix brand jeans. they have amazing cuts and I've been getting them for about $30 a pair (normally in the $70 range). I don't have as much of a problem with the quality of Levi's denim as I do the way they seem to wash up all funky and not fit right anymore.

Long history, great advertising, reasonable pricing, American icon, etc.

This is funny, I was just thinking about buying a pair of U.S.A.-made 501s (too bad that they still use Chinese cotton). Which would make my first pair of Levi's, ever.

In any case, Japanese jeans are superior.

Ye if you're talking about high quality denim, Japanese denim is generally significantly better (though also significantly more expensive, decreasing marginal returns etc). Levis are definitely very nice though, definitely not overpriced and have pretty good fit.

Look I get that you think you're Neo and you can see through society's matrix and you think you're the special unique snowflake, but at least sound like you know what you're talking about before you spew your BS. Levi's aren't even expensive at all. At least the ones outside the premium line. They're available at any chainstore. They're an American timeless classic. For the price, they are pretty good everyday jeans. So please, save your preaching for actual overpriced clothing brands. If you say stupid people buy Levi's because it costs 30 bucks for a 501 line, then I guess I'm pretty stupid.

If you live outside the United States then its fair to say they're a bit expensive because from what I've seen on forums, etc. a pair of 40$ Levis in the U.S. will go for the equivalent of like 80-100$ internationally. Even so, I feel they're at a good price point for the product you're getting. The thing with fashion is that if you want a good fit either get a tailor or be prepared to have to spend more time and/or money to get what you need.

I had the same feeling. They just did not look good on me! They sort of went flat on the front. And none of the sizes fit me. Even when I was in really good shape with a sixpack and all that. Now in my 20s I can finally wear them.

They either were really big and baggy or tight and "gay" as I called it when I was in middle school.

I have a pair of Levi's I bought in the Levi's museum/shop in the house Levi Strauss was born and raised in. Quite a bit more expensive than what you Americans seem to be paying, but I got a free t-shirt and they are the best fitting pair of Jeans I ever have owned.

501's 34 x 34, at 6-6 and ~85kgs

I have the same experience with you with Levi's jeans. Owned quite a few pairs and it doesn't feel right. I prefer Guess and Calvin Klein. I'll a jeans noob though.

I hate all kinds of jeans, I just find them downright uncomfortable unless they are baggy as fuck. It's really weird how humanity has gone from not wearing clothes to wearing clothes to be warm to wearing uncomfortable clothes only because of looks.

Hell, I prefer suits. Look far better and are usually more comfortable.

It's like $30 for a pair of Levi's.. that's pretty cheap. Try a bunch of styles and sizes until you find the best fit for you. It's all about the fit. If it's baggy, you're doing it wrong, or your legs don't match anything they have, and that's unfortunate since they' will match probably 99% of the population.
There is no one like you in the universe.

My last 2 pairs of jeans are 31/36, one slim one normal. :D Best would have been 35 length but couldn't find.
