So I'm not sure why I decided to hit my friend's ftp to grab some anime (yep, 2013 and still using FTPs) and grabbed the first short (11 ep) anime in his "complete series" folder: Ano_Hi_Mita_Hana_no_Namae_wo_Bokutachi_wa_Mada_Shiranai (dang that is long). Was about a group of friends fell apart when one of them died in an accident, and the typical anime angst ensues in tolerable enough spurts to be watchable. I like the not-typical completely random anime like that as well as the good old Dragonball Z or Gundam series. Back in college I was in the anime club at CMU and it was a bunch of nerdy dude sitting in a lecture room on tables watching some terrible anime like Slayers or El Hazard (ok, that wasn't too bad). Brings back some memories of sitting around the computer monitor with a tv-tuner and vcr watching old episodes of Kenshin.
But now I could use some recommendations on semi-recent series 2004+ that are worth watching. I prefer shorter series and not the endless ones like Naruto of Bleach. My college buddy keeps saying One Piece. I tried to watch a few more episode 1 of a few additional series and couldn't get past the intro in a few of them ( Darker Than Black, Rainbow, Clannad). Then again, Walking Dead and Breaking Bad are coming back on soon.

Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
I believe its 52 or 53 (I'm probably wrong, I watched the whole show in 2 days on netflix a year ago) 30 minute episodes.

Watch Mirai Nikki. It's a pretty good psychological thriller series. KINDA weak ending but it's mostly good.
If you're into mecha, Macross Frontier is pretty good and relatively recent too

I've never found anyone else that likes this show, but I don't know if that's because no one's ever heard of it, or I'm weird.
To aru kagaku no railgun. (A certain scientific railgun.)
It's my favorite.
It's a spinoff of the series 'To aru majutsu no index', but I like Railgun more than Index, and you don't need to watch Index for Railgun to make sense.
It's 24 episodes. I won't try to summarize, cause there are reviews everywhere.
I like it because it's laid back and funny. There are some fights, the fights are good.
Some people complain that it moves too slowly, but each episode has it's own plot, and around episode 8, you realize that everything you've seen is part of a larger plot.
My second favorite is Sket Dance. It's longer, 77 episodes, but there aren't cliffhangers like some of the other long anime you've mentioned. There are only a few two parters even.
It's also really laid back, but funny enough that I kept watching, and ended up liking the whole thing.
It's funny enough that my wife started watching, because she wanted to know what I was laughing at all the time.
Anyway, if you like non-stressful action, or non-insulting comedy those are my recommendations, because no one ever mentions them.

I'd recommend checking out Puella Magi Madoka Magica (12 eps), Steins;Gate (24 eps), and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (27 eps). Might take a few episodes to catch on (I know it took a couple for me for the latter 2) but the endings make them oh so worthwhile
As far as more recent stuff, Sword Art Online (25 eps) is another one that just recently finished airing

To be precise, there are two parts to Index. IIRC, the airing order was Index -> Railgun -> Index II. I recommend all three, and while they are somewhat independent in terms of plot coherence, you should watch the series in the airing order if you wish to follow the plot chronologically.

If you've never seen Trigun or Cowboy Bebop, you must. They're in the mid 20s range as far as episode count, and both have a movie. They both have superb English dubs, and although they have a slow first few episodes, by episode 10 or so I guarantee you'll be hooked.

The Railgun plot is actually pretty independent from the two Index series. The pace of Railgun is also much faster than Index (Touma and Index just talk wayyyyyy too much for me to really enjoy the show). I would recommend Railgun for sure, but not so much with Index.
Also to the OP, if you want to relax then you should watch some comedy animes. There were some pretty good series back in the old days: Seto no Hanayome, School Rumble, etc. Sadly nowadays I can't find even a decent comedy anime to watch

Why would you ever recommend anyone to watch the horrible mess that ís the deadman wonderland anime?
It's a horrible adaption of already only decent to mediocre source material. Might as well recommend him boku no pico while you're at it.

You have all right in the world to enjoy it and like it, but that doesn't change what a mess it is and recommending it doesn't really make any sense. Especially seeing how little sense the anime itself made due to leaving out so many important things such as characters that are crucial to character development. The anime makes a lot things happen just because without reason.
It's the same with SAO, shitty adaption of already mediocre source material.
Subjectivity most definitely means that you and others can enjoy them and think they're amazing, but objectively they story-wise both make a lot of mistakes and some things happen just because with no reasoning behind it and thus turns into asspulls.

I'm with you. Tried to watch both of them but I just couldn't be bothered anymore after 5 or so episodes.

I'm not saying it's amazing, but I enjoyed it and I'm generally not the biggest fan of short animes, personally my favourites are Naruto and Fairy Tail. So I was just recommending most the short animes that I found to be nice to watch in the hope he may enjoy some of them!
I agree objectively that flaws are present, but it doesn't wreck what is otherwise an enjoyable anime for me.

Hey. If you read, that specific bit was only about long animes, which out of all of them I prefer Naruto and Fairy Tail, I watch Bleach but find the plot to be quite literally "Fight, lose, grow stronger, win, next fight...".

Thanks all, I downloaded a few ep 1(s) from my friend and ended up settling on Fate/Zero as the series that caught my fancy after 1 ep. Reminds me a bit of X or FUshoogii Yuugii. I'm pretty sure I spelled that right.
Ive have watched Neon Genesis back in the day (hence the 2004+) and thought it was alright at the time, a bit too japanese/eden/lifestream/gaia/reincarnation mumbo for me personally, but worth watching.
I guess I should say I AM a fan of Naruto and Bleach, but only reading the weekly manga updates. The movies are ok, but I guess once I like a fictional universe enough, only the manga will suffice. But I think Inuyasha ruined long series for me. I couldn't stand filler episodes and/or half wasted episodes following some characters I didn't care about, which made me prefer short series, or ones with finite seasons with definable arcs/storylines.
