Planning a trip to Asia

Hey, I know a lot of TLers live in Asia/have spent lots of time in Asia. I'm looking to plan some sort of ~3ish week excursion to Asia in mid-late May, and am looking for suggestions on where to go and what to do.

Originally, I planned on stopping in Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, Taiwan, HK, and Seoul - but upon actually writing out an itinerary it seemed that I was spending a lot of money and time on the plane/train instead of actually in places. So I'm thinking about cutting out Seoul and maybe another place (Seoul mostly because I don't know any people in Seoul and it seems like not the most friendly city for non-Korean Asians).

A lot of this is based on impression and intuition (for places I want to go/things to do) - if anyone had suggestions, I would really appreciate it. Or if anyone wants to meet up that'd be sweet too!

I would probably do a week and a half in China and a week and a half in Japan, rather than trying to fit in a bunch of places. Then if you end up really liking a city or location you can spend more time there.

Tokyo is pretty good. I'd say a week and a half as alQ suggested is a pretty good time frame. ~5 days in Tokyo, ~3 days in Kusatsu/Osaka would be perfect really. Trying to visit so many places in so little time will leave you feeling like you didn't experience much.

You can visit Akihabara (anime/gaming/technology place, very popular), Asakusa for some temple/souvenir stuff, Ikebukuro for some nice ramen shops (mainly Ichiran/Mutekiya), Roppongi/Ginza for some nice rich type sight-seeing, Ueno park for scenery and stuffs.

You can buy a Suica card, put on ~ $50 worth of yen on the card and that should be more than enough for a week and a bit of travelling on the train.

However you may need to pay a bit if you plan to head on the Shinkansen out of Tokyo. D:

Don't miss Kyoto! The mix of modern and ancient is just awesome. That famous temple in the hills above the city is beautiful, as is the temple of 1000 Buddhas.

Be careful in China. Lots of places like to scam people who are only in town for a short time like what happened to Mr. Bitter.
