There was one point of my childhood where my cousins and I were really into this game called Beyblades. They are essentially plastic tops with metal rings in the middle that juts out. The whole point of the game was to knock out your opponent's top through a collision of the metal rings. A beyblade looked like this:

The metal ring in the picture above is the blue band slightly below the silver plastic top.

Anyway, the arena was this inverted inverted dome that was made of plastic. It spoiled easily. My cousins and I often spent our afternoons at our grandmothers' house playing. Our grandmother was constantly annoyed at the clangs of the metal collisions as she spent most of her time praying. Also, whenever you launched the tops, there would be this really loud "RIP!" sound. After awhile, my grandmother got quite angry and made us go out of the flat and into the corridor to play.

I was very serious about winning the games, so I cheated. My dad was my partner in crime. He bought me a massive metal ring that was about a centimetre thick, it was as thick as five regular rings stacked. When I fitted the thing onto my top, the pieces would barely fit together. I used it against my cousins, and I swear it knocked any top that it came in contact with out of the stadium. It had a spin-time of around 10 seconds, and that was enough to win.

My top was thrashed after the game because of the weight of the ring. I had to get new Beyblades constantly. This whole business of winning and then getting a new Beyblade so that I could win again went on for quite awhile. I remember there was one night after having dinner made by my grandmother I asked my dad if he had enough money to keep buying Beyblades.

For some reason I thought that my dad was going bankrupt trying to fund me. I kept asking him how much he had in his bank and he refused to tell me. I expected the worst and for some reason I asked if he only had two dollars. He didn't say anything and it was so weird then, and it still is weird now. He just said to keep playing. I stopped playing and my cousins did as well soon after.

Your cousins never bothered to feel the weight of your beyblade?

They always believed that they could beat my Behemoth if they launched their beyblade in a certain way or some other weird tactic

Damn I remember these! They seemed to get more and more fabricated and plastic/over the top as time went on. I even had a little dueling arena!

I had purchased this limited edition, pure black metal beyblade (the whole outside was sheet metal with just a plastic adornment) and I swear I never lost with that thing.

Your little moment with your dad is pretty hilarious. "Going bankrupt trying to fund me," lol.

Hey! I remember that one of my friends had that black beyblade you were talking about. He brought it to school and lost it. It looked so cool!

Holy shit.
I used to watch the cartoon. It was really entretaining.
Some of my friends played Beyblade on school. I was mostly into MtG, since I've always been a little nerd. but I enjoyed watching my mates duke it out on their stadium.
You just made me nostalgia, dude. :C

Beyblades were like the greatest toys, ever.

When they first got really popular and everyone was buying them from Hasbro and stuff, my parents went into their 'Opportunity to Make Money!" mode and imported a ton of stuff from Hong Kong to sell, including tops, launchers, plastic stadiums, and other accessories and things.

There was one main difference between Hasbro/NA Beyblades and the Asian ones that we got: The weighted metal discs were weighed 3-4x what the Hasbro ones weighed (which by comparison were basically nothing), and also much wider, so the top piece often served mostly for decoration. The pieces all still fit snugly together though.

I was special and used some Driger chassis with a heavy Asian disk with a part that made the top spin counter-clockwise *____*

For like my 9th birthday or something I had a bunch of friends over at my place and one of my friends bought me a really sick beyblade and a fancy arena which I used to dominate that day and every day for the rest of the month at school. I was super popular for a short amount of time. And that's how I got my first kiss.

Lesson learned: Bitches love beyblades.

I didn't realize how funny the commentators were in that show. The things you don't pick up when you're 10.

I remember I used to have a couple of Beyblades, and one of them had a metal ring while the others were all plastic. The metal one dominated, so me and my brother would always fight over that one.

How did you manage to make a blog post about Beyblades without mentioning that it was a badass cartoon with the badassest (?) theme song ever:

Pokemon cards got banned at my school (back in sixth grade) because one of the guys made up a rule that whenever he'd kill a Pokemon during a battle, he got to keep that card. He started stacking his deck and taking everyone's cards. Obviously there were a ton of traumatic experiences for the rest of the little kids lol.

I used to win Beyblade (Gen 1 Beyblades, not the new stuff today) competitions in Singapore, there was one point where I got into a qualifiers for a big tournament in Japan, but then the SARS scare ruined everything. [image loading]
