I finally received a capture card for my birthday from a fan, and I created a little unboxing video to share with you guys! It's especially awesome for streamers because of the XSplit gift card!

For the record, at least for recording high-definition VOD's (e.g. using fraps), hard drive speed tends to be as important if not moreso than the CPU. I have an i7 920 (no overclock) and for me it's perfectly plausible to be encoding a 1920x1200 video to x264 using megui while recording 1920x1200. Sometimes I can run two concurrent encodes and record at once as well. I have no idea about streaming though, since I'm Canadian and bandwidth is at a premium. I tried streaming using my Blackmagic Intensity Pro a while back but the bandwidth usage was just insane even on relatively low quality settings, so there's no realistic way I could ever justify streaming when I can deliver VOD quality both in audio and video that a stream would never come close to while not having my ISP charge me bodily organs in the process.
Ah wait, I already pay $75 a month for 3mbit upload. Too late.

Yeah, I dunno why I said rendering and capturing videos can be hard on your CPU and stuff. It's cake compared to streaming. For streaming even the best CPUs out there can't support a 1080p stream without being overclocked... unless you have fiber wire internet and can take off some of the load by having an extremely high bit-rate.
Streaming is such a pain in the ass sometimes!
It's looking like this capture card is going to be most useful for console streaming and recording. If I use it as a regular streaming accessory I can't use game source, I have to use it as the source and it acts as a screen region, showing everything that I do. No alt+tabbing for discreet commercial initiating or checking social networks in between games. It's especially sucky for me because showing a lot of my desktop and social sites would be too sexy for TwitchTV, so I have to be careful with what I show. Bummer!

I only have one desktop, and I have no gaming consoles... what is the point of me getting this card? Will it actually increase my desktop performance without me buying a second desktop to stream it with? I'm actually quite confused as to how this hardware makes streaming with Xsplit easier.

If you use it the way they want, either capturing or encoding through it, it can decrease your CPU usage while streaming by 20-40%, that's about it for just regular PC streaming or capturing with no console streaming aspirations.

I think the only way I can get a performance increase is with a better video card, frankly speaking. I have a 560Ti and I find my resources only getting taxed when I see motherships, vortexes, and protoss armies connecting with everything else in the game. I have an i7 3770k, and believe me it was not cheap.
