I'm not in a coastal area (toronto) so I haven't experienced much of a hurricane, let alone any powerful remnants of one. So I didn't really pay much attention to the frankenstorm until finding about how the storm got its name. It is in fact the resultant mixture of 3(!) weather systems coming together - the remnants of hurricane sandy, an atlantic storm system coming in from the east, and some weather coming in from the western US. And, don't forget the cold arctic air that normally flows down the north during this time of the year. Oh, and apparently its full moon too, when tides are the highest.

Now what weather I normally get is the result of those western US systems mixing with arctic air. Now throw in the other two and this alley of severe weather is a very high possibility.

This has potential to be an east coast natural disaster, I was actually going to blog about it shortly as well.

These feel so unreal since I've never experienced one, but look scary.

1938 was a once-in-a-century storm and imho the comparisons drawn are a bit shaky, but this particular storm definitely could turn out to be a real doozy. Conditions are ridiculous.

Uh it's probably going to be nothing but you know, call it storm of the century to get people to sit through commercials.
That being said y'all up north don't build against this kind of stuff so the damage would be worse even if it was wimpy.

If that cold front moves fast enough that 6 inches of rain they're promising me will turn into 5 feet of snow. I can only hope :D

But mostly likely what will happen is that the storm will go directly over me in central New Jersey. I'm gonna bust my hang glider out of my garage and see if I can actually ride the wind when it comes.

You'd die. It's not an even stream of wind. It's like getting beaten by a mob.

I did it in Irene. Then again Irene wasn't too powerful up here.

I live in a forest, I'm not getting hit by the full 70 mph winds. When they said I'd be getting 40 mph for Irene, it was only around 20-25 in my area because of all the trees blocking the wind.

After GFS finally caved to the ECMWF, I think everyone really started to realize that there's the potential for a crazy storm lol, took them long enough

I live in Britain, near a river. Recently there was maybe two or three inches of rain that raised said river pretty high, but only a few houses got properly flooded. Now I realise why I'm glad to live in Britain.

Looks like it's taking a wicked left hook right into New Jersey. Fine by me, MA should only get torrential rain and strong winds. Oh wait ... Stuff is getting cancelled here left and right.Best thing I've heard so far is when the Boston Globe asked Governor Deval Patrick if the utilities were ready to handle the storm he replied: "They better be." Them's fighting words!

From an article:
The storm may dump as much as 12 inches (30 centimeters) of rain on parts of the Northeast, the hurricane center said. The damage will be spread across a wider area than that left by a typical hurricane, the NHC’s Franklin said.

The National Hurricane Center said water may rise as much as 8 feet (2.4 meters) above ground with the storm surge from Ocean City, Maryland, to the Connecticut/Rhode Island border and 11 feet in Long Island Sound and Raritan Bay.

Uccellini said there is the potential for at least 12 inches of snow in West Virginia and lesser amounts in Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio.

It's pretty rare for the eye wall to be clearly defined over land. I've only seen one once out of many many hurricanes.

its kind of amazing to think this massive storm will basically just up and change direction. i mean, most storms just fly out into the northeast atlantic. its been moving pretty rapidly NE for the past day but noaa saying its "NW turn is about to happen". crazy.

Living in Massachusetts I really wonder if this storm is going to be that damaging and invasive to daily life. All the schools in my area and even my college's have closed for today. I want my goddamn exam results goddammit!

I mean I'm quite sure local businesses are going to remain open. Although I do see a lot of people gathering supplies.. but cmon is it really going to be that bad =_=
