Hey all!

Next week I was thinking of taking a long weekend to Venice for 4 days together with my girlfriend.

I've never been there before but I've wanted to go there since I was just a little kid, and want to see all I can get to in 4 days due to some parts of the city being closed soon because of the water rising.

I just got my hands on some cheap plane tickets (600$) for 2 persons and realized that it's now or never because of my girlfriends temporary job. I'm currently searching for hotels in the area which is hard because I'm not sure what to look for. And that's why I need tips!

First question, where is the "main" city? On google maps there's 2 islands, Venice and lido/poveglio?
And the mainland to the left called San guilliano?

To anyone who has ever been there before, Whats the "best" location for the hotel?

I've come across a lot of hotels not actually in the city but in Margherra / San guillano and I'm not sure how I feel about that. Shouldn't the hotel be in the main city? Or is it good to have some travel distance?

I've always felt like it would be cooler to have the hotel in the main city because I'm not going to be much in my room anyways and would be cool to just go right outside to take a glass of wine instead of taking a bus/boat.

I've also found hotels on the island(Venice) but I've never been there before so I have no idea where the museums / good restaurants etc are. Therefore, I'm lost.

Here's a list of some hotels I've found, If you've ever been there please give a rating or just an idea on how things work when I get there.

Sorry for being so wage about what I want.. My current goal is to experience as much as I can in Venice, but as I said I've never been there and I'm not sure what I should do when I get there. Any tips / pointers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for any reply!

If you're going to be there for 4 days only, I'd assume you're going to leave your hotel in the morning and not come back until late night anyway so where it is located shouldn't be that big of a deal. Can't say anything else since I know nothing about Venice :D

I would spend one day just exploring the city and going off wandering by yourself. There's a lot of very very cool twists and turns in Venice that's not listed in the tour guides

Also if it's like anything when I went in 2006, it smells. A lot.

Really? Smells what? Like poo? And hows that romantic? Known to be a romentic city yes?

The main city is Venice. That's where most of the main tourist sites are too. If you can stay there, it's a bit more convenient, as you won't have to travel back to the mainland each day.

If you're going to stay in Venice, keep in mind that you'll probably be arriving and leaving by the S. Lucia station. So, if you're staying far from there, you'll need to get some water transport there from the station (there are no roads or cars). That's not a big problem, just something to remember.

Essentially the whole area surrounding the grand canal has plenty of restaurants and whatnot. As for sites, you probably want to check out the Rialto bridge at some point, and definitely check out the area around the Basilica di San Marco. Just be warned, these areas are the most touristy (i.e., crowds, and people trying to sell you random crap). Also note that the island is pretty walkable. You can always get a ferry if want to save a bit of time/effort though.

I didn't get across to Lido when I was there, but it would be cool to check out too if you have spare time.

I'd recommend taking a trip out to the islands of Murano (glass making) and Burano (fabrics, and cool pastel-colored houses). There are ferries that leave and return fairly regularly. Murano's worth spending a couple of hours in, maybe getting lunch. Burano's better for a short stop, maybe an hour or so.

Also, the touristy areas (e.g., around the Rialto Bridge) can be really crammed. We had a lot of fun wandering off the beaten path a little. You get some peace and quiet, you see some beautiful sites, and ultimately, you can't really get lost.

Also, this is a pretty decent guide for more info: http://wikitravel.org/en/Venice

Hope you have fun!

Maybe you can find a better deal by getting an appartment/flat on airbnb.com

I've been there on December 2007 and the place didn't stink.

What I really enjoyed was spending a night in Venice just wandering around. Venice is a beautiful city by day but in the night when there are no more tourists walking around everywhere and all the bridges and arches are in shadows it is even more impressive i think.

Hmm, I was there in like June/July 06, and it was really bad. Maybe the seasons.

I liked the glass making places there, thought it was really cool
