I keep thinking I want to play this game again. But then I realise if I'm not in a null sec alliance i'm going to get bored, and then the hassle of getting into one will frustrate me, and then getting all my shit out there without getting scammed and losing everything on the way will take too much time. Why is life so difficult?

The best time I had in this game was playing in the /v/ corp in TEST and just trolling the shit out of all the TEST members while being able to semi-afk rat while watching GSL on my other screen. The isk rate wasn't great but I didn't mind because I was just watching GSL anyway and I managed to make >1bil from pure belt ratting while watching GSL.

Friend, I will evacuate all your assets from TEST space for a low 25% cut.

No but bumping your own titans out of position is pretty fun.

The constant threat of getting jumped and then starting counterfleets to go after raiders into your systems is pretty fun.

Going into the neutral null sec space and doing missions while there are 3 enemy corps located in that system is pretty fun.

Also, what are you doing for that 1b in 10 minutes? This is me afk ratting, not soloing complexes or anything like that.

Best story I have is where me and a friend were ratting in some dead end system so we could know if people were coming down. A tengu is reported in the defence comms. He keeps coming down and disrupting our ratting and insulting everyone he manages to jump over the local chat. We get mad so my friend jumps in his carrier and moves his ship on his cyno account onto the gate in a dead end tunnel. Person jumps through decides to engage. My friend instantly throws down the cyno and jumps in on his carrier and kills the tengu so fast. More shittalking ensues then I have ever seen before.

Good times.

Also another time me and an irl friend made new accounts purely to go through high sec and pop capsules that were floating through it. First one we got happened to be the CEO of one of the top 3 corps in that big alliance that was in northwest of null sec (can't remember the name, it's been too long since i played). Killed several bil worth of implants. Guy starts up chat with us getting real mad. We manage to convince him we're noobs and didn't know what we were doing. He gives us like 200mil to start us off in the game.

Gah, this is making me want to play again.

we are the raiders, not the counter fleets, and we rarely lose (see this) when we raid...and when people drop a carrier on us that carrier tends to die.

Guy I worked with last year - a mechanic - played the game with his dad since beta... odd yes...
He apparently is one of the biggest names in the game, never got his tag, but he farms accounts and sells them for ~1000$ each.
Crazy game, crazy guy.
I tried EVE, but I just felt that puzzle pirates was a more fun version of a similar style of game. Legit.

It might've been a loki actually, it was one of the t3 ships that looks like a drake. I can't remmeber the name tbh.

I remember one time after we quit TEST and moved to some neutral null sec, we were doing a t1 cruiser troll roam and came up against a proper fleet. They had the pirate armageddon ship (can't remember it's name) and it warped in way in front of the rest of the fleet. We were like wut, and then nuked it. It died so fast. Looked at the killmail. Most shitfit ship I have ever seen (apart from one of my corpmates who for some reason thought a LAR would be good on a carrier lol). We then proceeded to warp out losing nothing for one helluva a ship (at least for a dozen t1 fit cruisers each worth practically nothing).

A lot of people are too preoccupied with these notions that EVE is difficult (which it is), that the TL eve corp is elitists (which we are) and being yelled at (which you will) and really don't know what they're missing.

EVE is only as time consuming as you want it to be. You don't have to grind to level up -- you train skills in real time, even when you're offline. Yet the skills you train allow you to become better specialized at a certain role you'd like to play, rather than "oh level 90 will smash a level 40 regardless of skill". The game has a lot of real life skill that I'm sure many BW and SC2 lovers can appreciate. It's not uncommon to see 6 year old characters losing ridiculously expensive ships due to stupid things. It's also not uncommon to have <1 month old Hatchery pilots causing havoc left and right.

The sandbox that CCP promotes EVE as allows any player to make ridiculous amounts of in-game currency through EULA abiding methods, and depending on the amount of effort and brainpower you're willing to commit, you can either grind for hours making pennies or spend 10 minutes updating a spreadsheet and building castles in a day.

There's a LOT to do in EVE... but if you're going to solo, much of what to do takes initiative. Often people are lazy and don't take initiative, get bored, and blame that the game is boring. This is where the Hatchery comes into play. We won't hold your hand through every aspect, but we'll give you the tools and advice to do whatever it is you want, then throw you into the pit and let you figure out the rest yourself.

Obligatory mentioning of Kwark.

Kwark's a great guy, period. He actually cares for the newer pilots and helps them. Yes, he will call you stupid, he will call you retarded, he will call you ignorant - all of which are legitimate at the time he's telling you that, but in the end he wants you to learn a lesson everytime.

Once you turn off the "butthurt"-switch and listen to the message he is trying to deliver, everything works out great.

So, if by any chance you are intimidated to try EVE because of Kwark and the Hatchery - don't be and join up right away.

(For this advert, I demand 500mil ISK be deposited into my account, thanks)

I came along for a roam for the first time this sunday, and I think I screwed up half the commands kwark gave. I'm not sure, maybe kwark had a good mood or it was because I didn't get anyone killed beside myself, but that wasn't even close to half as bad as the eve thread made me expect. So you really shouldn't not play because you're afraid of getting yelled at.

I"m just super confused as to how you even start in EVE. I don't really have time to play now that I'm starting school (at least if I want to pay in isk)

Any good reasonable guides, or do I just need to get EVE and try and join hatchery

The Hatchery is your guide.

They basically lay it all out for you...read the OP of the EVE thread in S&G and if you can't figure it out, they don't want you anyways :p

In terms of how you get the very basics, there is a recently-improved tutorial that will help you figure things out like undocking and how to activate your guns. Beyond that, you can join Hatchery. There are other corps that are well-regarded for helping out new players as well. If you aren't up for joining Hatchery, I suggest joining EVE University and flying around the Aldrat area in the best-fit freighter you can afford, preferably between 03:00 GMT (+00:00) and 07:00 GMT (+00:00) any day of the week.

PS: I'll bring beer.

I think it was not getting anyone else killed -- probably hard to do in a tackle Merlin, but I'll bet there are select circumstances where you could. I'm sure that would be worse.

Being super confused as to how you even start in EVE is what got me into it in the first place. I wanted a game that was a challenge, just like BW or SC2, and where you could choose to be competitive similar to iCCup or the SC2 ladder (Hatchery) or just casually fool around and do stupid shit and laugh just like 4v4 or Use Maps Settings (RvB, Faction Warfare, group PvE).

There are plenty of ways to play EVE for free (via paying with isk, via EULA abiding methods) without having to commit a lot of time. Many of Hatchery are students and you'll see them disappear during exam times, but they don't have issues keeping their accounts paid. It just takes a lot of thinking outside the box and creativity, which some of the big guys can help you out with. You can even pay on and off, CCP's Account Management system allows you to easily switch back and forth between paying subscription and paying with PLEX/isk.

There are a lot of great guides out there, but it's hit and miss. I'll link you one but with caution. + Show Spoiler +
http://www.isktheguide.com/

Spending some time chatting with us will teach you more than spending days reading through all the guides out there. We're really really nice and welcoming people, minus a handful of butthurt bitter vets (you know you who are).

I think the quickest way to learn how to not be bad in this game is to screw up in an op and have people yell at you. Or to link your ships fit and have people yell at you. As long as it's not just mindless yelling and it's more "stop being an idiot, this is what you should be doing".

That's how I learnt at least.

If one of the BC pilots was tackled and needed you to scram the tackle off of him and you didn't do that then they might be angry.
