BM is something that is really common, whether you see it in a ladder game, on a stream, or chat channel, it's pretty unavoidable. Some people think its funny, others think its unacceptable.

Basically I am making this post because the last 3~ weeks or so I have acted way out of character; i've been quick to anger, in and out of games, and i've also been extremely selfish. Some people might not care, but to me sportsmanship is as equally important as skill; and treating other progamers, the organizers of tournaments, and casters with respect is very important.

I wouldn't make this post if I just had a random outburst of frustration one time; if that were the case I would just apologize personally, forgive myself and move on. But lately i've just been a terrible person all around, and it's something I want to change.

I just got done taking a 4 day or so break from playing, something that I feel like I definitely needed. I think it's too easy to get tunnel vision and only focus on winning when you are grinding game after game each day. In the 4 days I was able to take a step back and really reflect on how i've been acting and thinking, and I decided that I needed a major attitude adjustment. Being given the chance to be a progamer, and to be a part of this amazing community is a privilege, and it's something that I have been taking for granted. It grieves me and it's something that I am going to change.

Sorry to everyone I've mistreated, Lucifron, Bischu, Select
Those are just a few players who I was bm to in game.
I'll try my very best to treat others with love from now on. I want to be a positive figure in this community, not one of the guys who people look at and say "oh it's RaNgeD, this guy is a jerk."

While it's nice to see that you acknowledge your misbehavior, you owe us nothing. But you owe your fellow programers apologies.

Sounds similar to what many players have had to deal with including myself. It can give you a bad image but if it's a stressful period, people tend to understand that SC2 is a competitive game promoting rage occasionally.

Come back refreshed with a better mental attitude and people will quickly forget "you as a jerk". Even well-mannered players (maybe not white-ra or Sheth) have outbursts time to time.

Things can be frustrating, but I just wish that other important/sponsored members of the community could act more like this if they do wind up raging. Obviously avoiding actions like that is best, but moments of anger happen to everybody. You just need to learn to take responsibility for what you have done and said.

Some psychology studies have suggested that catharsis does not operate in certain cases - it fuels the problem!

Catharsis can often be good but raging at random people online is unhealthy, no questions about it. Kukuracha has strongly understated the modern psychological view of this kind of rage.

"Modern psychological opinion is clear on the usefulness of physical non goal-fulfilling cathartic aggression in anger management. "Blowing off steam" may reduce physiological stress in the short term, but this reduction may act as a reward mechanism, reinforcing the behavior and promoting future outbursts."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catharsis#Therapeutic_uses

4 sources for that quote alone and they are all reputable, mostly academic journals

Other forms of catharsis can be helpful but not this, its not healthy, don't tell yourself it is because it feels good. So do opiates.

I have never known you to be BM at all. That goes back to BW as well. Always seemed to be a stand up guy. Though, you do seem to up and quit every so often, but then always come back.

Good for you Ranged, this is the best attitude you can take about something like this. Being angry constantly and being a jerk will just get in the way of you getting better, and this is a very good way to get the respect of the community back for screw ups.

Do your best to maintain a positive attitude.

Not to mention, this is a topic that many people (progamers and community members) can relate to... so by making a post about it he opens it up for discussion and spreads awareness.

My 2c on the topic is that BMing on the ladder is pretty standard for a lot of people... while this is an unfortunate reality, I don't think it's that huge of a deal. However, BMing in tournaments (even small online ones) is pretty dickish.

RaNgeD would you care to elaborate on what type of BM your post is referring to? I mean did you put a bunch of pylons around the map and AFK in an obviously lost tournament game and call your opponent a newb? Or did you just quit out of a ladder game without GGing?

Well I was cussing at my opponents at the end of ladder games, in the quarters/semis of playhem's (being cast) and also in the TSL4 Qualifiers. Also in the CSN eizo world rundown event I was a total tool to SeleCT. There are a lot of different opinions on leaving without gg, but personally I tend to do it when I'm mad. It is better than saying something stupid, but I feel like it's important to say gg (again, part of sportsmanship). For me it's a show of respect.

I feel super refreshed playing the last two days. Treating people with kindness goes a long way; I don't have a lot of bent up anxiety anymore that comes from the guilt of treating people poorly, and I can already see it reflecting in my play. Attitude/mindset are some things that I don't think are talked about enough in the community. There is definitely a balance to be found between playing to win and still respecting your opponent as not just a human being, but as someone who may love Starcraft just as much as you do. This is definitely something that I have struggled with, and i'm sure other players have too. And although i'm sure this isn't the last time that i'll make a mistake, adjusting my attitude towards other's is something that I am prioritizing just as much as getting better, now. I already feel a lot more joy in playing; I know that his is pretty obvious, but most of us are playing because we are passionate and love the heck out of SC; that passion should bring us all together, not tear us a part.

I know that not everyone will agree with me on all of this; but I've spent a lot of time in deep thought and it's how I personally feel.

Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. 1 Corinthians 13:7

Interesting. I'm only a lowly platinum player, but from my experience I can confirm how much attitude matters in this. It helps to work on one's focus. You can focus on winning and get pissed off when you lose, and the more you lose, the harder you'll try to win and the more you'll get pissed off. OR you can focus on playing well, which allows you to be ok with losing because either you didn't play so well or the other guy played better. Then you can also appreciate how the other guy played well, and maybe learn from him. At the very least you'll learn from your own mistakes every game, which you don't when you rage and blame your loss on bad luck or something. Last season my play improved significantly because of such an attitude change, it makes playing much more gratifying and it makes you play better.
