Hello everyone, i'm writing this blog to possibly get some help with a streaming problem that I've had recently. While I was living in my team house in Bucharest I was streaming 5+ hours almost every day, but since I've been home i'm not able to do that. My game gets a slight lag everytime I try, it's annoying and very hard to practice with, so I haven't been able to stream lately and I really want too.

I'm not super knowledgeable when it comes to hardware and that sort of thing, but I've learned a little these past couple of years while troubleshooting.

I tried to change a bunch of settings on both XSplit and my PC, none of them fixed my slight lag problem. I've done some reading and the best solution I have come up with is that my processor is not strong enough for streaming; Now, this is the worst case scenario, because if it is the case it means that I will need to invest in an entirely new PC, which I am willing to do, but I am only willing to do it if I know for sure that my current processor is indeed the problem.
I was thinking of buying an i7.

If anyone has any knowledge about how good/bad my current hardware is AND/OR can recommend me hardware for my new PC (I want to be able to stream np) I would appreciate all the help that I can get!

Here is my current PC:

AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1090T Processor 3.20GHz
8.00 GB RAM
Windows 7 64-bit
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560

Besides hardware you need atleast 5mb+ upload speed

Your CPU is absolutely fine for streaming. Maybe you can OC it a bit (if you have an aftermarket cooler).
Equally important is your inet-connection (upload). The more the merrier

I think my internet is more than good enough for streaming, that's why im pretty annoyed/confused on why i'm having so much trouble. Here is my latest speedtest results:

20 mbps down
3.6 mbps up

Then have a look into your xsplit settings, into the xsplit server u are using and actual real internetspeed (speedtest it).

I have looked a lot into my xsplit settings, as I said in the OP. However I was not aware that there were different xsplit servers. I also do not know how to test my "actually internet speed." My numbers from speedtest are not enough?

It's not just about max upload speed. You also need to have a stable upload speed.

I have 10Mbps but can only use a fraction of it because it's not stable beyond 2Mbps.

Use the internal xsplit connection tester several times to see how much your upload fluctuates.

For all other intents and purposes, your computer will be fine to stream well in at least 720p, as long as your settings are set up properly. So I'm thinking it's a connection issue. Especially since you said you used to be able to stream well. I'm assuming you haven't changed any settings.

Another way to test this is to do a local recording (so it eliminates the connection factor). If you don't lag while doing a local recording, it is most likely a connection issue.

At 720p, default presets, I would shoot for 2000 bit rate.

Thank you! I will try this.

Upload speed is the hardest thing for me to get out here in Ontario, Can. Everyone offers 1mb upload XD

Alright so.. after trying to do just a local recording, I get the same slight lag, it actually feels like graphical lag.. Not sure where to go from here. But that pretty much narrows it down to my hardware and eliminates the idea of it being my connection right?

Is the lag similar to what you experience when doing a live stream? (i.e. is it the same "slowness"?)

If it is, you need to do two things:

1. Make sure your xsplit settings are right; for your hardware I would suggest:

Xsplit
-Preset: Default
-Resolution: 720p
-Bitrate: 1500-2000

SC2
I would set everything to Medium-High (especially anything to do with CPU usage, like Physics) for now; if you have everything on Ultra or Extreme, this could be the problem. Your GPU is good enough to handle the game's graphics. But your CPU, despite being a 6-core, will only use 2-cores to play SC2. The 2 cores themselves aren't really good enough to handle Ultra/Extreme CPU settings. If you're noticing unit movement (aka physics) lagging, for example, when you have a lot of units on screen, being slow, this is most likely the cause. The added CPU stress when you're streaming/local recording will excarbate this problem.

Even on an i5 2500k (which is miles ahead of your AMD), I set all my CPU settings to Medium when streaming.

2. If this still lags, you might need to run some hardware troubleshooting like checking to see if your CPU/GPU is overheating/being throttled.

For this, you would need to download prime95, CPUID CPU-Z, HWMonitor, Furmark, and GPU-Z. You can find all of these here:
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=278114

Make sure you download the right version (i.e. 64-bit)

Yeah i'm experiencing the same slowness as I do when I live stream. I actually always play on the lowest settings, and I still get this lag. Also when I boosted my bitrate from 500 to 1500 it actually made the problem worse. In Romania i was using an i5 and had no problem streaming. You are pretty much confirming my suspicions that my processor is just really bad. TY for the help btw.

Try using the camera dxtory. I have an i7 core with a radeon 6800, so I shouldn't have any sort of graphical lag. Though streaming with xsplit's screen region for my camera causes some. I went and bought the dxtory camera and couldn't feel the difference between recording and not.

Also a 6 core processor sounds really weird... Usually cores need to be in counts of multiples of two, so 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 etc. I don't know what having 6 cores would do for performance honestly :/

Might want to check these out?

I am not confirming your CPU is bad. In fact, you should be able to stream decently on a Phenom II X6 1090T. I've seen some people stream on worse AMD CPUs (Athlon II X3s and Phenom II X4s). Unless you have unrealistic expectations, I think there is something going on that's unrelated to your CPU being "bad."

Also, if going from 500 to 1500 bitrate made it worse, that is confirming the problem is due to the internet connection.

In all honesty, unless you just have the money to throw away, I would rule out all other problems first. Like checking to see if you're being throttled by your CPU. Playing on low and streaming at 720p should be no problem for your CPU.

Thanks for your post Cecil, I think I'll try dxtory, if it works i'll be extremely happy. If it doesn't, I guess i'll only be out $45.

There's a tool called Moo0 system monitor. (http://download.cnet.com/Moo0-SystemMonitor/3000-2086_4-10864749.html)

It monitors different things and tells you where there is a bottleneck. In my case my hard drive seek time is slower than the rest of the system.
