Hey everyone, considering this is the blog section and I would like to get some advice from people who have potentially gone through such a procedure (or have known others who have), I am asking for the pros and cons. First and foremost, I know TL is not the best advice for such information. I have posted on other forums that directly relate to this topic. In addition, I will consult many plastic surgeons before deciding to go under the knife. The primary reason for this post is to find people who have undergone this surgery and ask of their opinions.

The surgery is for both aesthetical and functional purposes. I have a really bad deviated septum, which directly interferes with my breathing. Also, the shape of my nose has bothered me since childhood. Self-confidence is of the essence of living a successful and happy life, and I feel like the shape of my nose correlates with it.

Thank you for reading and I hope I can get some advice!!

Self-confidence problems will not be fixed with a nose job. I feel the deviated septum reason seems like a bit of a sidewinder rationalization to cover up the fact you really just want an aesthetic nose job given that you've grown fine past childhood despite your "breathing problem." But it's your choice.

Don't use the yellowpages. That's all I know about plastic surgery.

I have a friend who got his entire jaw unhinged and reset because it helped him breathe slightly better. Even though the titanium plates now in his jaw set of metal detectors everywhere, he's extremely glad he got it done.

I would recommend seriously looking into it. The difference even a slight improvement to breathing can make is huge.

Don't listen to this guy, being psychoanalyzed by strangers over the internet rarely works out well. You should know yourself best.

Other than that I can't help you lol.

I agree with Skilledblob, if you got medical reasons then do it, but for self confidence I don't think it will help, if you are certain it will then afterall it's your choice, I truly advice you to take care of confidence as an mentality question and not an apperance question.

from a social science perspective. cosmetic surgery.... actually works to make your life better. i know it's like, "omg you should be happy with who you are" but the society we live in... well... lol don't blame the person, blame human biology and culture.

so yes, for medical reasons or not, it's totally legit to do it. now if it's a small imperfection... then maybe not, and it does cost some cash sooooo at the end of the day in my opinion it's a cost benefit decision and the benefits are quite legitimate

What a clever comment. I guess dentists should just stop giving kids braces, you can eat food with crooked teeth just as well.

On topic, my gf has had a nose job a couple years ago and she is extremely pleased. Keep in mind the procedure is for life and can easily be botched by a reckless or bad plastic so you should take your time and visit several reputable clinics, talk to the surgeons and see if they are pros or hacks. A good doctor won't rush you into it and he will be able to recommend a shape that isn't copied off Heidy Montag but is actually tailored to your face. The more natural it looks the better.

Don't be cheap about it, a good plastic charges a lot of money. My advice would be to find a couple medical or nose job forums and really take your time to see which doctors received feedback from thrilled patients and which ones get flamed a lot, also take a close look at the before & after photos of their patients. Then go talk to at least two doctors and choose the one that is taking it easy and seems to be genuinely concerned about your face as opposed to your money.

After it's done you're good to go in 14 days or less. With a good job, chances are you will look a lot better if your nose is too large or particularly distorted now, because this draws attention to it instead of the pleasant parts of your face. My gf easily went from 8 to 9 with the job ^_^

I'd say this can be a really good choice if you find an above average doctor - and a really bad one if you're sloppy or cheap about it and end up being messed up by some newbie or "mass production" doc. Gl with your new beak!

Seems like you should do it. Helping with the breathing seems like it'd be nice, and I see nothing wrong with doing it for aesthetic purposes either if you think it'd help you. And sorry, haven't had anything like that so can't personally say much.

Aside from the part about self-confidence, I also get the sense that aesthetic improvement is your main goal of having surgery. Is it?

I think a more important question is how much does your nose bother you?

I have the same problem, my right nostril is very often clogged because apparently my septum is crooked. I am often unable to get to sleep when lying on my left side because of this. I've been to two doctors already, one advised me to get a nose job. I still havent decided though, I kinda like my nose.

Anyway, if you think it will benefit you, make you more handsome/confident or just improve your overall quality of life, then do it, why do u ask. The procedure is afaik pretty disgusting but not particularly painful (and even it was, who cares)

Show us a pic of your nose and let's evaluate! It'd be a shame if you've got some misplaced confidence issues, and ruin a perfectly good nose for vanity.

Even though it has some functional issues, I suppose.

I had a crooked septum as well. It never really bothered me until around age 23, where suddenly one of my nostrils was pretty much permanently clogged. This is because the nose keeps on growing for a longer time than most of the body, which is why its perfectly possible to get through your youth without any problems and suddenly have breathing problems occur at early - mid 20s. I got a nose job and I am glad I did. I didnt have any problems with my nose aesthetically and you couldnt really see the crooked septum, so it was purely for medical reasons. Now I can breathe through both nostrils and dont have to breathe through my mouth every time im exhausted. If you want to do it, dont be afraid! You will only feel a little discomfort for about a week after the operation, and then its a bit of a hassle to keep creaming your nose with stuff every day for like a month and frequently visiting the doctor to check if recovery goes along nicely. But after that, you have a whole life of being able to breathe freely ahead of you.

well what do you want to hear?

"The septum and nasal passages are lined with a layer of soft tissue called the nasal mucosa. To repair the septum, the surgeon works through the nostrils, making an incision to separate the mucosa from the underlying cartilage and bone. The doctor trims or straightens the bent cartilage and then replaces the mucosa over the cartilage and bone." ( googled that passage )

Then they'll stick plastic pieces and sand filled balloons up your nostrils to fixate the pieces so they stay in place. Most likely you'll have to stay a few days in hospital so they can keep an eye on you. After a few days the doctor will pull out the balloons and start hoovering the snot out of your nose. And some days later you are good to go home with a protector on your nose, that'll have to stay a few days

I'm also debating getting one. My nose has been fucked up from birth, I can just barely breathe through one of the nostrils, and the other one often clogs which turns me into a mouth breather *cringe*. It also looks quite weird because of how it is shaped, since one nostril is almost fully blocked it looks crooked with one side being much bigger than the other side.

It's scary though because if I change it, there's no turning back. I don't even know how I would look with a normal nose, and what if it doesn't look natural at all? I really want to get a nose job, but at the same time it's really scary. Ugh, decisions...

Well, I am looking for people who have gone through the procedure primarily for the experience. Was it worth it at the end? I know it is a highly subjective subject in terms of satisfaction before and after a nose job. Some people miss their old noses, while others love their new ones. This largly varies on the plastic surgeon one visits and the expectations created on both sides of the equation.

To put it into simple terms, was the surgery justified?

As stated earlier, I am looking for responses from people who have either experienced the surgery first hand, or know someone else that has.

Any help would be much obliged.

Im like 99% positive having one of your nostrils partially blocked is horrible for your health. I mean, dont even research yoga stance on this, its absolutely essential for proper breathing techniques and bodily functions. But even traditional medicine always suggests an operation, its a widely accepted solution. My friend went for it when he was 27 or so, he said it made a world of difference. I need to do it but Im a pussy.

Now thats health benefit part. I absolutely oppose the cosmetic aspect of it. I cant justify doing it for cosmetic reasons, esp if youre a guy. Look at Sean Penn or that jewish actor from the Pianist. They have like ugliest noses in history of mankind (aside from mine). Man up yo.

As stated in the OP, the functional AND cosmetic reasons are important for me. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

Thank you for your kind suggestions though.

Personally, unless your nose is completely fucked, I would NEVER get plastic surgery to fix it for aesthetic purposes (this is just me though, so you can probably disregard). However, it sounds like it causes you breathing problems (my friend has the same thing, looks normal but he is still going to get surgery I believe), so that would be a good reason to get the surgery done.

I don't understand why people are so against plastic surgery unless it's for medical purposes.

Why is it such a stigma to get plastic surgery for the sake of your selfconfidence?

If its for health reasons, then do it without question dude.

my boss had some sleeping problems because his jaw didnt set right, they had to crack/break his jaw and he was in serious misery for about 6-8 weeks while it all healed up. He also had braces that just came off before the surgery too, looks completely different and feels way better being able to sleep during the night.

A few weeks of pain for a longtime of happyness, i say do it! good luck!
