Okay, i am just arriving home from a party. But this wasn't my regular just-get-drunk-party.

I have been playing on the table soccer thingy all night long. So, lets get started with stating, that i am pretty decent at table soccer. I am nowhere close to pro level, but i beat the regular dude without any problems, so I am decent at the game, not more, not less.

I guess in comparision to Starcraft you could say i am in Diamond League.
Okay, so far so good.
Next up I have to say, i am very vocal about things that happen in the game. In sc2, i tell my opponent he has "well played" when i lose, and even i type "Nice Drop", when i get dropped with my army out of place.

Same thing with table soccer. If my opponent scores a goal, i'll do a "tip-of-my-hat"-gesture and tell him that he has done very well, and he scored a nice goal.

Same thing happens when i fuck up. If i fly all my mutas into marines and lose them all, i'll write something like "awww, that sucked". Analogue to table soccer, if i fuck up there, i say to myself alouid "aww fuck dude, what the hell. comon YOU CAND DO IT .. !!" or something like that.

Bottom line is: I am and have always been pretty vocal about stuff that happens in game. But i have NEVER insulted anyone, nor have i ever been offensive in any way. I never told anyone, that he sucked or something.

All i ever do is: Either criticize myself or applaud my opponents actions (if he does something well).

But tonight, i was told this behavoir was selfish, arrogant and repulsive.

I mean, wtf. All i ever do is either commend my opponent for doing something really nice or wrangle with myself if i did something that was really bad.

HOW IN THE WORLD CAN THIS BE OFFENSIVE AND ARROGANT??
Please Teamliquid, tell me!

i can see how it could be considered arrogant if for example you are crushing your opponent and he finally scores his first goal and you start saying "wow nice job man", it could be annoying to hear and possibly taken the wrong way.

For all of you, who are wondering what table soccer is, check out this video:

And @Pengu1n: That exactly the point that i don't get. How can it be annoying to hear that you have done "a nice job man".. no matter what the score is?

It would seem the only way it could come off arrogant is complimenting yourself on doing something well.
I mean, it's sort of stupid of someone to call complimenting someone on how well they've played arrogant...

Yeah, thats excactly the key question:

Can i be arrogant while honestly complimenting the opponent on doing something really well... ?!

yes you absolutely can come off as arrogant despite honestly complimenting your opponent. It has nothing to do with what you meant and everything to do with how he/she interprets what you say. It's actually pretty common for a person who is frustrated and angry (such as is often the case when playing a game that is by nature competitive) to just interpret anything as sarcasm and arrogance.

Is it not called foosball anywhere else?

I feel like in a party atmosphere some level of trash-talking is the norm. Maybe you were seen as taking it to seriously.

When someone is losing, they are going to take pretty much everything with a grain of salt. You are a good person that keeps a clear head. I wouldn't beat myself up over the misguided thoughts of another. Try to correct them that you were only congratulating the players efforts and not trying to make it seem like anything but that. It is a simple compliment. Keep up the manner ♥

English German translation

Soccer -> Fussball
Fusball/Foosball -> Tischfussball

See why this can be confusing for Germans?

Lets take this to another level, your family and mine are at war, I shoot one of your family members, will you say 'Hey man nice shot!' ?
I would consider that to have too much manners. In short, SC2 is war and every unit is a family member.

yeah i agree with ohsea.toc, it's not arrogant it can just get annoying, sometimes it can come off as sarcastic if you're complimenting your opponent (even if you don't mean it like that or even use a sarcastic tone!!)

i know someone who acts the exact same way as you do: he has entirely good intentions but he talks too much during competitive games and it always makes me anxious because he's going to get punched over it some day.
Have you considered the MMO-Champion forum? You are just as irrational and delusional with the right portion of nostalgic populism. By the way: The old Brood War was absolutely unplayable

During the game it's abit weird, if after the gg you say something like "nice drop" I'm sure nobody would be offended by it.

I think too much manner is definitely possible. You would be my least favorite kind of opponent one who talks about everything that happens, even my play.

I could see it being an annoying affectation in real life. In fact, I can think of people I've met who do things like this and just come across as though they are trying too hard to make people around them comfortable. Usually they're the guys taking a casual backyard game way too seriously. Not saying that's you, but it may be the image you're projecting.

Yeah, basically this.

Sometimes it can have a belittling affect almost like they're being talked down to as a lesser competitor. Not saying it happens all the time, but its possible to be interpreted this way.

Its also possible they might be more frustrated with you being hard on yourself. If you get mad at yourself for playing bad, but at the same time you are stomping the opponent, it makes them look even worse. It feels bad to lose to someone when they keep talking about how terrible they're playing. Usually people express the disappointment with their play verbally if its a close match, or if they're losing. When you berate yourself when you're ahead, it kind of has the feeling of "I would be beating you so much more if I was playing right". I can't say this is what you're doing, because I haven't seen it in person though.

Honestly though, its probably not something other people have a big problem with, just something that annoys them a bit after an extended period.
