So I had the idea to do this while watching the latest Game of Thrones, did it during lunch as value practice (it stays mostly black and white til the end to explore shading) and ended up focusing on face details a lot more than expected:

haha, yeah as I say it's a speedpaint, getting a likeness in only an hour is impossibly difficult! I was trying to figure out where I went wrong, someone pointed out not only looking old, but looking a bit like Ned Stark too

Not bad. It's not an easy task to paint with that kind of lighting going on! The combination of black lines, some really dark shadows on his skin and a ghastly skin colour is making him look a bit, eh, raggedy and dead. I'd suggest using larger brushes, brightening his face a little bit and adding hints of colour. Don't be afraid to paint things even if you don't see it in the photo. Also, the wrinkled bags under his eyes are too big and dark, in my opinion.

Edit: To clarify, those dark lines around i.e. his mouth, nostril and on the bridge of his nose, should be avoided. Just painting over those would do a lot, I think.

Thanks, the photo lighting actually caused similar dark lines, might've been a bad choice in reference, but it provided a few interesting changes

One thing I did try and focus on was only using smaller brushes in areas of focus, a really good tip I got from this blog-post by Sam Nielson http://artsammich.blogspot.com/2012/02/8020-rule.html

But yeah, need to liven him up a bit!
