Hello TL. I'm really dumb when It comes to the technical side of playing video games and need your help! I've looked into it a little bit but don't know which companies to choose from. I'm currently with Shaw high speed and have their broadband 50. It's really unreliable, I don't get the speeds I'm paying for, and I really don't like working with Shaw. It seems through out canada Shaw, Telus, and Rogers are the only 3 companies worth using but their all worthless lol. Are there any US companies that venture into Calgary, Alberta that I should look into? Or am I stuck with crappy internet until I move to Poland?

Thanks, and once again I'm sorry for being lazy about this. I turn to TL all the time for my technical needs and was hoping someone could steer me in the right direction.

Shaw is the best of all evils I am afraid.

The thing that bothers me the most about internet in Canada is 1: you don't get what you pay for, 2: the upload speed is probably the worst in the world when compared to download speed. I think 50 down gives you 1 up from shaw.

Yeah holy crap you get such low DL/UL rates for the buck here. on a supposedly faster than average internet i get 6mb/s that is a joke

how come? (my parents got bell back at home without me knowing, haven't really noticed much difference except the fact you have to pay per gig above a certain monthly cap which sucks)

Switched over from cogeco cable, speed is significantly slower, services are terrible (they try to solve everything over phone, no tech comes in whatsoever). And I get disconnected from the internet everytime i get a phone call

If you don't get what you paid for than you are either too far from the CO (if you're on DSL) or your area is congested (if you're on cable).

Services are not the same throughout Canada lol. The east and west have it much better than those in Ontario.

Cable and DSL are two different services. DSL quality depends on distance, if you're far away from the CO than there's nothing you can do about that besides deal with it or go with cable. If you are getting disconnected by a phone call than you need phone filters. If you're talking to Indians over the phone than just ask for level 2 or just avoid the phone altogether and get help on their direct forum at dslreports.

If you are lucky enough that they have service near you, you really should get it immediately. I switched from Rogers (yes, they rent the physical lines from Rogers), and the difference is astounding. I get exactly the listed upload/download with consistency all throughout the day. Note that if you switch from Rogers, there will be 3-4 days of no internet as Rogers uses a shitty bureaucratic loophole in order to fuck you over. I've never had any significant outage, and they have 24 hour tech support with English-speaking Canadians (possibly French too?) on the other end of the line.

The difference between having "magical" software monitor and filter everything and not having it is truly staggering.

It's true, ridiculously expensive and you don't always get what you paid for. Many people recommend smaller companies like TekSavvy and Acanac and others, but they are just renting lines from Bell and basically, any time internet sucks, it's Bell's fault. At least they offer much better rates. I think the landlords of this house here are paying $70+ per month for 10 Mbps down and 0.5 Mbps up, and like 120 GB bandwidth with Cogeco, or something.

It's like what I imagine being in an abusive relationship to be like. Hard to get out of because the next one could be worse.

This is why im looking to see if theres anyway to reduce my TV bill in order to upgrade to something with a higher upload speed. 512 Kbps for 52 $. As im planning to finally stream after finals are finished.... Think it's 62$ before I can get even 2.5 Mbps and knowing that you might not get what you're paying for is really sad.

I've been planning some doom speedruns and SC2 content for a while now so hopefully it'll work out so the time wasn't wasted.

If you're with Rogers than that's easy lol. Call retentions and get 50%-70% off.

Shaw is probably the best I have had, I get close to the speed I am paying for.

Not sure what I could recommend you other than maybe moving to a different neighbourhood.
