I'd just like to provide an example. I really hate to use sc2 vs bw, but there's really no other comparison. For the hell if it though, I'll use Halo (the only other game I've really followed professionally)
Just look at the ro16 for GSL:
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/fTtaT.png)
Looking at that field, those are the best in the world. As a Protoss, I want to see them all do extremely well, hell I wouldn't mind a ro8 with 4 PvPs. The problem is, all of the players are too likable.
How can you not like group A, for example? Genius, in a field without DRG, has his chance for redemption. NaNiWa is a foreigner. Supernova has the chance to cement himself as the oGs ace, with only TheSTC left in the tournament. Virus 2-0'd MC and 2-1 Nestea the round before - he's proving himself too.
Group B: Mvp is coming back from his wrists being unable to exert force. July is the fucking god of war and who doesn't want to see him do well? HerO is from TL. Leenock is so cute!
C. That's actually just a group of death. Parting and MKP are arguably the best P/T, and while STC (and you can still put a backstory on him because of Supernova) might be the weakest here, you have to remember last round he beat DRG and Taeja to get out of the group.
Finally D, the boss toss, a 1 year old kid, and the other two top protoss.
My point is, you want EVERYONE to win. Even Mr. Chae (jokingly) said he wanted a round of 17 so that both MC and Nestea could make it out.
But it can't happen. :[.
I feel like the solution to wanting everyone to win is to remember that they're all in different teams.
MVP: Genius QST: NaNiWa, Virus, July, Parting, Squirtle oGsTL: SuperNoVa, HerO, TheStC, TaeJa FXO: Leenock, Oz SK: MC Prime: Maru, MKP IM: Mvp Not represented: SlayerS, Zenex
Now. Who's your favorite team?
Contrasted with BW, a team league focused game, it's pretty easy to want someone to win.

Personally, I'm cheering for HiyA and Flash. Why? Because HiyA has a chance to join a team in a league where the team is the focus of training. And because I want Flash to win everything + Show Spoiler [spl] +
As much as I like individual players, or the few protoss alive, the KT fan in me doesn't really want anyone from SKT to advance, or care about anyone else. I'm following flash, and action, and I'm sure other team's fans are doing the same thing.
If this is a poor example, I apologize. I'll offer another example.
In Halo 2, 2 teams won everything. The captain of Final boss was Walshy, and the captain of Carbon was Shockwave. The two teams winning everything of course made fans choose their teams and stick with them. Flash forward to Halo 3, and Walshy joins Carbon. what the fuck, they're supposed to be enemies?!
The true carbon fans remained though, they didn't care that an ex-enemy had just joined their team, they were happy to see carbon WIN.
Or maybe it was just me... I know that a console shooter and starcraft aren't necessarily comparable but Its all I got.
I'm not calling for an action or anything, just expressing an opinion. It'd be a hell of a lot easier for me to cheer for someone in GSL when there's a greater rivalry between teams. I didn't even really cringe when ST lost to Prime in GSTL (and ST is my "favorite" sc2 team), because how do you not like sadcutekingprime?

SC2 teams are still young. Give them time to develop.
|
Well don't look now but there's some bubbling tension between ST and Prime and the drama between them seems to have split the community to the point where many are actively cheering for ST and against Prime. I'm sure everybody's rooting for the 2 Liquid players to advance too. For me personally seeing SlayerS all knocked out was fun as well.
|
Great post...I agree with the guy above me. We need to see the teams develop more. But in SC2 the teams and players are so intertwined with one another that there are often friendships between players on different teams, that all the team rivalry seems...well kind of moot.
Also, I think you made a mistake. July, Virus, Squirtle, and Parting are on ST. Your post says they are on QIM.
|
I'm not complaining that they're not developed, just expressing regret that I can't pick a player to cheer for.
red4ace, me too. Not sure why no SlayerS makes me happy, but...
and thanks, fixed SpearWrit

An osl isn't an osl if bisu makes it past the prelims, therefore Flash cannot possibly get revenge in an osl.

Just saying, during that Halo rivalry, I was mostly a Walshy fan. I liked Final Boss but switched to Carbon because of Walshy.

FU for leaving out NSHoSeo!

Hiya retired after hwaseung disbanded, I doubt he is eager to return to the progaming scene considering the turmoil that's going on right now and the switch to sc2 which I don't think he experienced as oz disbanded too early.

HiyA didn't give up his programing license though, he can still play. The lack of a wildcard tournament means he intends to play, too. I don't think he plans to switch to sc2, but I mean, power to him :D

I didn't even really cringe when ST lost to Prime in GSTL (and ST is my "favorite" sc2 team), because how do you not like sadcutekingprime? Speak for yourself. It ruined my entire weekend (though Squirtle tearing a new one through IPL made up for it slightly). I've never really liked Prime anyways (it's consistently been my least favorite team due to MKP's rabid fanboys, though I really don't have anything against MKP himself tbh) ... consider my dislike for Prime to be akin to red4ace's dislike of SlayerS.
Favorite team ST since foreverrrrrrr. The Bomber/Squirtle/Ace trio won me over way back when (Bomber as fav. Terran, Squirtle for his game vs. MVP, Ace for ceremonies), and then the rise of Curious (fav. Zerg in GSL) and Parting (fav. Protoss in GSL) just added to it. July ofc, for being July, and the way Virus is clinging to Code S in defiance of everyone makes me smile. They have such a good team dynamic too, I feel, and the way they didn't shun Naniwa after all his drama made me feel as if they're just great folks; same with them taking in FD and Trickster and supporting them.

I'm with you on the ST love! I remember just choosing a team to start liking and I decided on ST because of the name. Then I found out all of the players and basically fuck yeah startale.
^^

Don't forget the logo changes! They were endearing in a "oh god no whyyyyyy?" sort of way. Personality in their fucking logo, man! (Carl's Jr, fighting!)
Cheering for a team you really like gets emotionally draining after a bit though, esp. if they're as inconsistent as ST. (Not that I blame them for this past GSTL, fffffuuuuu MKP, but okay, Squirtle walked away with 16k pocket-change, I guess that's good enough compensation ...) T_T
But yeah, really would like to see more team-love/rivalry in general. It makes it easy for me to cheer for indiv. players too, esp. in this GSL with all the ST players spread out so nicely amongst the groups.
|
The Carls Jr. Star was the best, I was really hoping it'd stick.
I'm just sad that even with liking ST, I still have trouble picking players to advance out of groups, save for a few.

Who I want to win is quite simple for me - team terran
I want team protoss to get smashed
