First of all I wanted to thank everyone for being amazing and all the support on twitter and on TL on living in Korea. It has been uplifting and a motivator.
I wanted to write more about my Time in Korea. But I wasn't sure what exactly to write about. I thought about it and I thought I would give you a little insight into each player in the house and on the people I have met and come across during my time in Korea.
This is going to be more just me giving some insight into each player.
As well I wanted to answer some questions people have asked me with more details than brief answers done via twitter and pm's and such.
MarineKing: mkp is sort of a hard person to describe. He is very lighthearted, yet also serious at times. He is one of those people who is extremely social with everyone, though is shy sometimes.
I have not had as much interaction with him as I want to, due to him travelling so much. So my communication with him is often short and I have really not had the chance to get to know him that well. But he really is just a awesome guy when I have spoken to him and often helps bridge the communication gap that can happen when I talk to people when he is around.
Salmosa: Salmosa is similar to mkp. except he is a lot older and not as social. This past weekend him and I have spent a lot of time together, just due to us being almost the only people in the house (AKSola being the only other person). Salmosa acts lot like a brother to me. Whether its because he is older, or because he just is like that.
Salmosa has sort of a more introverted personality. He doesn't talk much, but he does talk. He is always trying to look out for me and making sure I am in good condition. He even came with me to Proleague finals yesterday, even though I don't think he wanted to be there.
Bboongbboong: Bboong is likely the person I am closest with in the house. Him and I get along really well. He is also one of the more goofy people in the house. He always takes every chance he gets to goof off and have fun. but he also has his serious side.
Bboong is also very warm and kind. I mentioned this in my last blog, but its worth it to mention it in this one. I had 2 friends of mine, them being a lot older than me (40's) I had not seen them in a long time. They were also friends with a member of my Baha'i community, that is how I met them. I had not seen them though in a long time.
I had gotten an e-mail from a friend asking me to track these friends down for her, as she had lost contact. She had a phone number, but wasn't sure if it would work anymore. Brian had gotten cancer and he returned to his home in Korea to try and find a cure. His wife Jessica went with him.
I had showed the phone number to Bboong and he called the number without even thinking about it. It worked and I was able to talk to Jessica. She explained to me that Brian had stage 4 Lung cancer (he wasn't a smoker though) and that the cancer had spread to his bones.
When I got off the phone I had a breakdown. Out of everyone who was awake. He was the only one just to try to talk to me and be there for me. He took me out for a walk and let me vent. He didn't understand much of what I was saying, but he let me vent and he tried to help in any way he could. Even with the language barrier being so big, and his English not being the best. He was able to cheer me up, even if just for a little bit.
He made me happier. He is out of everyone I've ever met, one of the few people who has been there for me. Hell, my family didn't do that. For that I don't know what else to say otherwise. He is just one of the most amazing people I've come across in Korea and a guy who I'll never forget.
Creator: Creator is an interesting guy. Creator is one of the younger members of the house. But makes up for it in how he presents himself in the house. He has tried many times to communicate with me. and he has. He is a more emotional player, and it does sometimes give him a disadvantage in tournaments, but he still tries his hardest.
I have had a fair amount of communication with him, but it is often blocked by the amount of times he doesn't understand a word or phrase that I say. Which usually ends up with him saying "me chobo english," or something along those lines. He tries, and that to me is awesome.
With my recent switch to protoss, he has also offered to help coach me. So once everyone gets back from GSTL, I'll be spending a fair amount of time with Creator.
Classic: Classic is the oldest player in the house. He acts sort of like a support system for the younger players. He is also one of the better English speakers in the house. so I have had the chance to talk to him a few times. He is very much one of the underrated players in the house, who is actually very good. People don't often see him perform as much, but he destroys the competition when needed.
Bumblebee: I really don't know what to say about him. He is one of the quieter players that was in the house. From what I understand now he is living outside the house (though this may be just me misunderstanding something). He only spoke twice to me ever haha. From what I was told his English wasn't good, but that he wanted to communicate with me. He asked me one big question though. He asked, "Why do I want to be a progamer?". Which at the time was a hard question to answer. But for anyone who lives this life, the answer isn't a hard one anymore.
Byun: Byun is another guy I really don't know how to describe. He has only spoken to me once ever. But many times he has given me high fives and smiled at me. So I really don't know much about him.
Much of what I witnessed is him just being a quiet guy, but has a few close friends in the house and really doesn't socialize in the house outside those few people. but he is really social with those few people.
Annyeong: He is the 2nd oldest player in the house. He is as much a coach as he is a player. I very often see him watching one of the other players play and then giving advice, and supporting the player.
He also a lot of the times helps with the emotional support of the player. During TAC2, often you would see annyeong giving players pep talks between matches, and also helping them with their emotions when they lost. He is very much a guide for everyone and he does his best.
I have spoken to him a few times. Often he helps me understand the workings of the house and makes sure I don't mess something up. Just due to the culture differences, he has been a big help in that regard.
Maru: Maru actually is the one person I have had next to no communication with. He just doesn't speak much, to anyone really. He is really quiet and just sits down and plays his matches as hard as he can.
I think I spoke to him once on the day of GSTL. and it was one word. lol. Because he is the youngest players, it seems like he has the biggest determination in the house, and he just never gives up. He doesn't spend his time having fun or fooling around, he gets down to business and plays his heart out day in and day out.
Gerrard: ahh finally, how to talk about this man. He is amazing, he is the coach/ manager of the team and does a amazing job. He lives in the house and is like a father to the players in the house. He guides them when he needs to, and he is like a friend when he needs to be as well. He is extremely dedicated to his team and works all the time. He motivates the team and knows what each player needs in order to perform at their best.
The time spent with him is often him trying to help me and guide me through my time here. He though sometimes gets overly concerned about me for no reason. For about a month he kept puling me into the office to make sure I liked the food and wasn't hungry (I wasn't eating very much I guess haha)
Though his understanding of Western culture has but him and I in a couple of awkward conversations. I have mentioned one of them in a post in another blog about Korea (its called "my happy Korea" or something like that) but he has been helpful as much as he can and always is willing to try to accommodate me whenever possible.
Coach: That’s basically the only thing I know him by haha, I can't remember his name even though he told it to me. Though I've never really had to use it so I've been lucky.
The coach is one of people I've spoken to the most. He is the only one who knows in the house about everything I've gone through. Him and I one time spend 3 hours talking to each other one night. I told him what my goals are and what I need to do while I am here. He understands me more than I think he does.
He also is one of the few people who explains to me what is going on in the house. and why things are the way they are.
One example was when I wasn't eating very much, The players would make some comment and everyone would laugh, it was always the same comment. I asked him about it. He explained that it was because I didn't eat much, there was a long running joke that I would die. When I would go to sleep everyone would say that I wouldn't wake up. or when I would say I'm not hungry that they would joke that I was going to end up dead soon. Something along those lines. He said it was all in fun and they didn't actually think I was going to die, they just thought it was werid I ate so little.
Anyways, he has been a huge help here, and always makes sure I'm doing well. He also has decent English, so that helps a ton. Though many times I'll have to translate one or two words for him to understand. but otherwise he understand much of what I say.
I think That’s it for everyone on prime who lives in the house.
I do want to give some shoutouts though for people I've met during my time here so far and have been awesome to talk to and meet.
Coach Lee : This guy is amazing, seriously. He is one of the most kind hearted people I've met. During Code A qualifiers he went out of his way to help me. Which was awesome. If you ever get the chance to meet coach Lee, meet him, you won't regret it. I've spoken to him a few times on skype since then and he has been awesome. He gets such a bad reputation from some people who try to discredit him. But he works his hardest and does so much for his players. Give this guy some huge credit.
The prime clan guys: There are so many I don't know where to start. I spoke about them in my last blog but I think they deserve a second mention. They have welcomed me with open arms. They are awesome folks. Can't wait to see them again.
NEXSeron and NEXSickness: I met them both last week during GSTL and they were awesome. They both have good English (Seron being fluent). And they were just fun to hang around with that day. Seron also streams, so follow him on twitter people (NEXSeron). Sickness also streams and is one of the most creative players I've seen ever. I've long been a fan of him and was amazing meeting him in person.
iG.Edison: The invictus gaming coach from China. He was living in the prime house when I met him. Now he is back in China. He had really good English and was always willing to have a laugh and have fun. I cannot wait for the time when he gets back to Korea.
One story that sticks out in my mind with him. One time we went out for Korean BBQ. We were talking about the peppers that come with the lettuce. Creator said that they were not hot. So I took one ate ate it. I started turning red in the face and tearing up. Edison started laughing. and got Creator to try one. Creator got a hotter one than I did and went crazy. He drank a ton of water and tried to get rid of the spice. Macsed did the same and teared up as well. Edison being the only one who said they weren't spicy. Finally ate one, he said it wasn't spicy, but noone believed him. He was turning red in the face and tearing up as well. Was a funny sight to see.
Snatcch: I was lucky to meet him once while in Korea. A nice guy. With one of Tt esports players training here in Korea I've gotten the chance to talk to him on a couple of occasions. A very nice guy who is really passionate about esports. by the way, if you ever need to buy a new mouse or keyboard, but it from them, even if just to support a amazing company.
BW TL'ers: Yesterday I had the chance to meet many of you for proleague finals. and what a amazing chance that was. Not only were the finals amazing. Finally being able to put a face to the ID was great. Thank to you guys/gals I had tons of fun and got the chance to see Bisu and Flash in person. plus also got on camera. That heart was for you TL <3
I'm likely forgetting so many people. I have met so many here its hard to put everyone and everything into one blog.
I also wanted to answer some questions people have posted on the threads, and also asked me on twitter and pm's on TL here. in the name of self plugging. Follow me on twitter. Its radrelsc2
Q: how can you afford living in Korea with no team?
A: I worked and saved up a fair amount of money for a long time in order to come here. and even with all that money, I am only able to live here for 4 months. I did a lot of manual labour.
I don't want to leave Korea though, even when my money runs out.
Right now my goal is to stay long term. I am hoping that I can start doing coaching (pm me on TL if interested btw) and that I can find a team interested in keeping me in Korea. I have spoken to a couple of teams, but the main thing is finding a team interesting in having someone stay in Korea. So that’s very hard. I am hoping though if possible. To stay here for a long time.
Q: favourite food in Korea?
A: I don't know the name of these things, but they look like mini fish, and they are about the size of anchovies, but they have the heads still attached and are very small and taste amazing.
Q: how cheap is Korea?
A: food in Korea is cheap, so is transit. I don't know much about rent and such in Korea, but it seems to be fairly cheap from what I have seen.
Q: What is your background?
A: I started playing sc2 in October of 2010. I was a competitive rts player of many different games starting with AOE2 as a young kid. I wasn't very good at any of those games. but my passion for gaming grew out of AOE2.
I never played in tournaments because I lived in rural Ontario, which internet is very expensive and very limited. So my practice was generally playing against AI and refining builds, then practising them on ladder 2-3 hours a day. Then spending rest of my time watching and studying vods and replays.
I think that answers most of them and if you have any more feel free to ask them. Also like I mentioned earlier, follow me on twitter folks. I try to talk to everyone who tweets @ me on twitter. My twitter is radrelsc2 ( https://twitter.com/#!/radrelsc2 )
On April 09 2012 20:21 Type|NarutO wrote: Whats your level of play?
I just switched from Terran to protoss last week, so not very high haha. I'm still trying to get a feel for the race, though my builds are solid, I often don't tech fast enough and fall to good mid games pushes. My late game is good vs Terran but not as good vs Zerg.
with everything going on around here since last week. GSTL, Proleague, IPL4. Its been hard to really grind out the games. Once everything settles back into a routine. I'll be at the same level I was with Terran in a couple of weeks. Which was mid-high masters KR. Though I have Creator and Classic both offering to coach me and help me learn protoss. So I'll be in a much better spot to improve 10 fold and twice as fast. My plan is to be GM in Korea by end of May. Its very possible for me right now, I just need to get a little bit faster in reacting to stuff like major tech changes and drops.
What I have been told is that right now, my builds are solid, but its getting out of that standard build and having to keep up pace with a high level player that will try to set me on the backfoot.
With Terran I wasn't getting coached by anyone. With protoss I'll have 2 Code A level people I can count on to coach me and help me learn.
My point is, what can you offer a team to pay for your expenses in Korea? I don't think it would be cheap for a team to pay your living there without getting anything out of it. Please don't take this as bashing, because its not. If you are actually capable of showing good results it might be worth for a team to recruit you, but as for being mid-high masters, I guess its something on KR.
A big part also is, as you are no big fish in terms of name/skill as you describe, you might be even less useful to a european or north american team, as you cannot participate or qualify for high-profile tournaments.
I for my part think that investing in upcoming players is worth it, if they are hard working, but eSports is not THAT established that a well named team would pick up a newcomer and invest a ton into him/her.
Great blog. I love hearing details like this from inside team houses. Korea is a fantastic place and there's still a lot out there for you to discover.
PS: I was the Canadian/Saskatchewanian sitting in front of you at the Finals. You're good people ^^

I understand your point exactly. Believe me, I've said the same thing to the prime coach here a few weeks ago when we were talking about teams. amd my expenses right now equal less than $500 a month really. thats me cutting corners and staying in the house 90% of the time.
in Korea, its hard to show results outside of the GSL. for a foreigner its even more difficult. Because not many teams want to invest in a player who is rather unkown. Right now I am starting to talk to a few Korean teams. But nothing is certain right now. If I can join a Korean team, thats my biggest chance to succed.
Joining a foreign team would be ok. I get decent lag from KR to NA at most times. Some times I get insanse lag and cannot play. Other times it feels like I'm playing from NA on NA. I don't have a EU account, but the lag is ok from the prime house. Not the greatest, but decent.
I said this to a team manager not too long ago. If I join a team, I want to be able to represent them to the best of my ability. I don't want to join a team only for the money. If I join a team, I want to be able to be proud to play for and be able to play for them often.
and yeah, I understand where teams are coming from. I am working hard on trying to do well for Code A qualifers. My goal is to make it to the final round of Code B. I want to show a good result before finding a team, if thats possible.
I run out of money as of June 6th. So up until then I can work hard.

Thanks. Awesome meeting you yesterday. I was so dissappointed having to leave early. But it was amazing.
There might be team houses you pay a certain amount but you can live/train there. That should be lower than 500$/month I guess. Also 500$/month for a living is not a lot, BUT for a team its a huge paying for an unknown player. Hopefully you can get a good result and you get picked up.

Auctally that includes the rent I pay here. Since I was friends with a former prime player and also do a lot of side work for prime I get a decent deal for rent. My budget is $500 a month. I usally just have enough to buy myself a train ticket to the Code A qualifers after all expenses are paid lol. and to be honest. I have about 800 won on me right now.

lolol
Thats a hard one to answer without getting the ire of every mkp fan in the world haha.
Its a yes and no question. Sometimes he is, but not always. I've learned things about mkp that completly changed my opinion of mkp, actually that happens a lot with mkp. I'll learn something new and It'll be like "wow I did not think of him like that," and yeah.
on a mkp related note. I met his sister once. Nice woman, and a fair amount older too.
She didn't know how to say anything to me. So she just gave me a big smile and offered me food. When she said byw to me, she just started smiling at me and rubbing my shoulder. I didn't know what to say (I didn't know they were leaving at the time) so I just smilied back awkwardly and that was about it.
Yo! I was sitting like 4 seats to your left at the proleague finals, but had no idea who you were. It's pretty badass that you get so much interaction with the Prime players! Also, congrats on getting the camera spotlight solo for a few seconds at the finals, pretty fucking amazing
On April 10 2012 05:03 TheOnlyNurSo wrote: Do I understand it right, that someone can join a teamhouse as long as hey pays money for the team to stay there, even if he is unknown?
It doesn't exactly work like that. How I explained it was a very simple nutshell answer. I cannot really get into a lot of details. but its a lot more complicated, and took a lot of work.

also, if you could explain the logic and planning that went behind the builds prime put out in gstl finals, that would be awesome

Yeah, give us the dirt.
I don't have much dirt. But I'll give one example.
I'll be sitting here praticing, just playing my matches, and mkp will lose his match that he was playing, and I'll hear him curse in Korean. The first time I heard him swear in Korean it really made me go "wow that guy actually has that language in him,"
Stuff like that happens often, where he will say something, or do something really different. He is a hard guy to read well.

Haha, well as an MKP fan that doesn't surprise me one bit. I've always viewed him as someone who wears his emotions on his sleeve, so you can always tell when he's happy or sad, so him swearing after losing a match doesn't surprise me. Now if you told me he then started raging like Idra, then I would be shocked.

I live in Bucheon, which is in between Incheon and Seoul. and I can coach both Terran and Protoss. I could coach Zerg, but since I have never played Zerg, it would not be nearly as effective as my protoss or Terran coaching.

I've seen him get close to idra rage, like slamming his mouse and stuff, but not raging in game and stuff. Speaking of which mkp just got back a few hours ago and looks beat up. a long weekend for him I think it was. haha

Ha yeah. I meant more along the verbal rage cause even day 9 has talked about his rage against his comp equipment before. Like, I couldn't picture mkp trashing his opponents in game and calling them terrible and a waste of life and stuff.

Smoking is treated very much like smoking is in the United states. Its not encouraged, but discouraged, and in general their are smoking areas and such away from buildings.
Only Salmosa smokes in the prime house. Though he doesn't actually smoke in the house, he goes outside of the apartment building to smoke.

actually I have no idea what happend. He hasn't been in the house the last couple of days, and I have not really asked what happend, but I assume Maru just went to visit family for a few days for a break. Would not be suprised if that was the case.

I live in Bucheon, which is in between Incheon and Seoul. and I can coach both Terran and Protoss. I could coach Zerg, but since I have never played Zerg, it would not be nearly as effective as my protoss or Terran coaching.

Its a yes and no question. Sometimes he is, but not always. I've learned things about mkp that completly changed my opinion of mkp, actually that happens a lot with mkp. I'll learn something new and It'll be like "wow I did not think of him like that," and yeah.
this needs examples o.o
I don't see him doing that kind sort of stuff either. nobody in Korea would do that kind of stuff.

Koreans on iCCup were the most BM opponents :o
I meant in terms of progamers. No Korean progamer would ever bm someone.
Hey breti, thanks again for all the updates you've been providing
Just wondering - are all the rumors people have been repeating about the tension between Prime and Startale true? MKP made a pretty heartfelt speech about wanting to end the bad feelings at the group selection meeting after July said he felt cheated while picking. GOM didn't solicit Startale for a response and I'm wondering if you have any insider info on how all that drama is playing out.

I really have not asked. Nor have I witnessed any blatant tension between the two teams. But I do hear them speak about startale more often then they used to before. This may just be because they beat Startale, but I don't know. Its kind of werid.

(or do you know broken korean so you speak to them in broken korean o_o... or are you pretty good at korean?)
Well a few players here speak ok english. Usally conversation is in broken english, which is fine. I can speak a little Korean, but not enough to say a fullsentence.
Listening to artosis talk about maru the other day, he mentioned that he's got great teammates to bounce ideas off and get help from. However, you said maru rarely talks to anyone in the team. My question is, how much shared strategy talk really goes on in the house because from your description it sounds like everyone just does their own thing and bury their heads in their own computer without much socialization.

Well Maru is for the most part the exception to the general feeling of the house. Maru is vey quiet. I have seen him speak to others, but its very little and its brief, now I don't know that it happens maybe when I'm not awake/around they do it, but I really don't see Maru talk a lot.
the house in general is very social, most of the players always talk to each other and sometimes are very loud and having fun. Meanwhile talking sc2. It a much more social environment than most pro houses I think, the feeling is a lot more casual.
For example, Lyn's brother often comes in visit's the house and just hangs out with everyone. In a lot of other pro houses this would be a lot less common, while here it happens a lot.
Lyn is in China last I heard. He was kinda friendly with the Prime members though, at least when he was in Korea, 'cause a lot of them at the time were also ex-War3 players from what I can remember. (Before Check and Maka left at least?)
I didn't know that Lyn has a brother though. Does his brother play? o_O

What city is the Prime house in anyways?
Well Gerrard is a former war3 pro as well, so that does contritube to it. His brother does indeed play, Zerg and is high masters on kr server.
How often do you see the coach giving advice to players because seriously I want the coach to drive it into mkp's head to scout! He would barely ever lose if he wasn't so stubborn and scouted because he keeps dying to all-ins and cheese because players know he doesn't scout and take advantage of that fact. It's fine if he wants to play greedy at times, but he MUST scout to make sure it's safe to do so or if an all-in is coming. I think it's the coach's job to send that message to mkp because it's a flaw that has existed in his play forever and something he has yet to correct.
The coach should list some of his recent losses and explain to him, he lost all these games because he didn't scout.
