Coming to the conclusion of atheism is more difficult when you are brought up by religious parents.

I was under the same impression, and I equally thought that the "atheist = respect" stipulation was profoundly stupid. Not that atheists deserve disrespect either, it's just a personal choice that... well... has nothing impressive about it.
