Well, back in my day (the late 90s), a swift kick to the nuts his how i solved my high school bully problem. My bully had a good 50lbs on me in high school (I came in at a massive 115 lbs in my sophomore year, and didn't gain any till i was way into my 20s). He came at me in the dressing room, making threatening movements (pulling back his leg to kick me but putting it down, or acting like he was going to punch me but stopping as his arm was coming forward). I dropped him with one kick when he was throwing a punch/fake punch (don't know which). but regarding op, "defending your friend" seems like a very thinly veiled reason for getting involved in a fight with this girls boyfriend.
