Hey everybody,
I posted a blog a WHILE ago talking about potentially trying to get a teaching job overseas in Europe, and I have officially landed one for a full school year in Trieste, Italy. I'm teaching elementary school at an International School, so no I don't speak any Italian yet :D
The purpose for this blog is that I've only left the United States to go to Canada, Central America, and the Caribbean, never have I been overseas for an extended period of time, and I want to make the most of it in numerous ways.
I'm hoping to revamp my progaming career during my stay in Italy, and attend at least one event in Dreamhack.
I was hoping for two suggestions/words of advice from people!
First off, I'm living in NorthEast Italy if you were unaware of Trieste's existence, and was hoping to hear about places to travel throughout Northern Italy or anywhere beautiful in Europe that's within train or cheap flight distance. Note: I'm currently extremely ignorant of travelling prices throughout Europe etc, so any advice or information would be very helpful!
Secondly, is anyone in the area a SC2 gamer?! I want to expand my SC2 friendship to many Euros that I've either only talked to online, or those I've never met before! I'd love to travel to European barcrafts, or any type of gaming related event and any suggestions would be hugely appreciated!
Thanks again, I hope people get in touch, I'd love to meet you all!
Your friend, Ryan "coL.Ryan" Rushia

You should be able to take a cheapish train to Florence, I just went there a few months ago and it's really nice for a day trip.

Buon viaggio! I teach Italian (in America) but did some overseas studies in Italy. Nowhere near Trieste though. I'll post from home with some of my advice/exp

Within Italy I would suggest you go to Florence and Rome for sure. Give yourself at least 1 full day for each, preferably a day and a half or two days. Be careful with public transport as it is prone to strikes and on Sundays everything can be shut.
August can be a very tough time to arrive. Ferragosto is the traditional summer holiday where many stores and services shut down and huge swaths of the population go on vacation. In northern Italy it's less extreme and you might not even notice anything until 15 August, which is the big holiday. Try to get invited to someone's celebration. Italians are typically very friendly. Take advantage of the hospitality and make some friends quickly : ) It is not uncommon for someone to invite you over to their home within 1 or 2 meetings.
Italian is a pretty easy language to learn. It's about the same level of difficulty as Spanish (maybe even easier) and they use a lot of cognates, words that sound like words in your native language. If you work at it you could get to a basic level of communication before you leave in August.
Edit: sorry, I totally forgot that the state that Trieste is in doesn't necessarily use standard Italian as the first language. Most/all people will speak a dialect or non-Italian language. Many would have knowledge of standard Italian and they aren't too far removed (it would be intelligible to me, but for a beginner it would be difficult).
Other travel destinations...Austria is not far away and is very beautiful.

Switzerland is really beautiful and very close to northern Italy. as long as you travel with Ryanair (lol!) you could probably get anywhere in eu for about 40-50 USD (turn/return).
|
haha i've heard a lot about ryanair so looking forward to checkout out their prices for sure. @bigtony i've heard from the headmaster of the school i'm teaching it that it's a hybrid of italian and... slovenian? maybe? don't remember the other language it's a blend of
@eee i've heard so many good things about switzerland throughout my life it's definitely a location i'm looking forward to checking out!
