So I am a Computer Information and Science major in college right now. I am looking into different jobs or internships that I can get into or do right now so I can get away from McDonald's and acutally get to work with something that doesn't completely suck ass. Now I am not looking for help with jobs or anything like that what I am asking for is for someone who is working in something like this to give me some ideas of what the work will be like such as a normal workplace and stuff like that. Anything would help since I really have no idea what to expect and I'm kind of nervous about getting this type of job. So any ideas would be appreciated and thank you in advance.

Talk to the career services in your college...

I did an internship at an oil company... all I did was enter shit into a database which was pretty boring.

The other workers that were actually done school were in IT, basically going around helping the whole building with shit like microsoft word or "why is my internet not working"

The other, better IT employees had their own projects and were usually only in the boardroom discussing. The IT project manager made six figures a year. He got his job after being with the company for 7 years. I try to see myself in that position someday with my Comp Info systems and management degree.

Work is very laid back for me. I can come to work and leave whenever I want, just as long as I get my 40 a week. No dress code either so sometimes I wear pajamas or a costume. Supervisors don't look over your shoulders all day, they mainly just check results. It really depends where you work, but generally IT jobs are a bit more lax.

Career services told me the best place to get good information would be my professor and that guy is never around so I turn to TL since its a bit easier and I don't have to listen to his fat ass blabber for any longer. Oh and thank you for the post

I'm confused by your title / your major. Are you studying computer science? Are you looking to work in IT or as a programmer? I worked IT jobs for several years (high school through college) but studied CS and transitioned to programming as a job as soon as I could. Personally, I highly recommend programming over IT, but I'm sure others would disagree.

Some similarities between the two: both have a very casual, laid back culture. You likely won't have a dress code, won't have to deal with a massive hierarchy, and will spend time making fun of the many stupid users you encounter(plebes). Both leave you in front of a computer screen for many hours at a time, and both give you plenty of time to do what you want.

Anyway, I have experience as a CS student, an IT worker, and a coder so let me know some more specifics on what you're doing / hoping to do and I can give you a better answer.

Honestly I have no idea what a job title for my major would be though I am working towards an IT job since programming isn't something that I could get behind. So sorry for the confusing title I was just trying to get my idea out there.

Database entry work is pretty much the standard level entry job for students, its a great start I suppose.
