We will see a pretty dramatic separation from MLG supporters and 'general' eSports fans here, I think. I'm not saying you can't be both, but I just don't see an average fan paying $20 for a weekend PPV event when there are gazillions of free streams to watch instead. I enjoy watching live matches on free streams, but I don't love MLG enough to skip a full meal of wings and beer.

The problem is not the PPV idea itself. The concept has been floating around for a long time, as an alternative to the freemium one 2011 starcraft was based on.

The problem has been how MLG announced it. They had spent most of 2012 hyping up the new format, the new Arenas, telling everyone how awesome the 32-man weekend is gonna be. Only to go, btw, most of you won't be watching once we're at the home stretch.

The second has been talked about much more in the main threads: MLG pulled a bait n switch on their gold pass subscribers, much like what they did to their silver pass subscribers last month. While it may fill their short term coffers, these post-purchase switch-a-roo is insulting to their loyal customers. Frankly, they deserve all the flak, and maybe a bit more. Imagine if another firm who has a poorer understanding of community management, like NASL or Berlin Open, that pulls the same shit twice in a row.

The blog is having a go at "people who bitch having to pay". Actually, the main sticking point is not the PPV concept but the high price tag ($20) and the bait-and-switch on gold pass subscribers. Nope, totally disagree with this blog - if a product does not meet my expectations on both price and value, I'm entitled to not purchase it. Contrast MLG with GSL - for $70, you can get GSL Light, which gives you 5 GSLs. And if you think I'm complaining about having to pay, I purchased GSL Premium for $100 but only because I believe the product is worth it.

I believe MLG is making a big mistake overestimating their product - if they had charged something reasonable ($10), then the backlash won't happen. The consumers are going to send MLG a strong message by voting with the wallet.
