Just thought I'd let you know that I've recently finished work on my latest mix, this time with a dubstep theme. I've set the limit to 1 hour on this mix, unlike my 2 hour DnB mix last time. It moves from a Future-Garage sound into deeper, darker 'Real Dubstep' tunes, with a couple of more popular and mainstream tracks popping up here and there along the way.
You can stream it here on Mixcloud, with the time-stamped tracklist feature (I did time-stamp all the songs): J Type - An Hour of Dubstep
Or you can download it direct from here: http://www.mediafire.com/?9qsi286b6malrv5
I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out, so I hope you guys enjoy it too. Please feel free to offer any feedback or criticism to me here in this blog, or via PM.

Hi man, I've only listened to the first ten minutes but i am liking it so far. Personally im more of a house guy but im trying it out. ^ _ ^
|
Oh cool, thanks for listening (and replying). Hope you like what you hear. I should do a house mix one of these days, but I'm a bit out of touch with it at the moment.
|
I'm currently listening at work and I'm really enjoying it, awesome track selection. Loving the deep/progressive(?) sound a lot!
I might not have layered over the start of The Recluse so much - purely a taste thing... I love the start of that song.
|
Yea, I can see where you're coming from on that point. I just love the way the drops end up matching up there.
Thanks a lot for the feedback though, and thanks for listening.

Thanks I'm really enjoying listening to this. The songs you picked out really flow and mesh well together. I've listened to the first three songs so far. I wish I could give more valuable criticism but thanks for the music. Edit: I really like the song I love you so, I just like songs that are really catchy and use the catchiness? (lol) to their advantage and play it over and over.

Just starting it now, a quick look over the tracklist makes me very happy. I'll try to listen to the transitions and see if I can hear anything that sounds odd or anything.
First transition was nice, the layering worked really well. Man both of those songs are awesome.
Movie Boof came in a bit loud when it started, caught me a bit by surprise. Timing was great though.
Nice transition to The Recluse. Movie Boof's kinda hard to transition out of well. The sound doesn't really mesh with Nero's style, but that was nicely done.
The transition to Cloudlight was pretty cool, but the bass overlapped a bit weird for a while there. That is a hard song to make work, lol. So much weird stuff happening.
Transition to I Love You So was great. Very well timed. Love songs like that with catchy vocal hooks.
Transition to Sweet Talk worked brilliantly. Not much to say about that.
Transition to Pacifica (Beautiful track!) was awesome too.
Transition to Refugee was perfect.
Transition to Strangelove was also excellent.
Same with Badman.
Not much you could have done to make the transition to Seeerious, still felt odd, but that's just because I feel the two tracks don't mix that well.
Transition to Silk Button was very good. And a cool song.
Transition to Left Behind was perfect.
Same for Mystical Lighter.
Very cool transition into Abstruse!
Always loved Tron, such a funky jazzy sounding intro, and a nice switch into that cool super-saw(?) bass.
Transition to Surge was really interesting, but I'm kinda sad there wasn't more fade before Tron cut down severely, the volume drop was not subtle at all.
Transition to Dinosaurs was great. Absolutely love that song, and it's video (I mean, it's like having an acid trip).
Transition to Badman felt weird for one moment, then was fine.
Final transition into Blank Space was good, it meshed well with Badman.
Yes, I just sat here updating this for each transition.

Edit: MY BAD missed the download link... sorry.

About 1/3 of the way through so far and loving it. Normally can't stand the average dubstep thats hitting the radio / hearing at night clubs. Is there a name for this? Doesn't feel like the same genre...
Would love to hear some James Blake thrown in if you do another mix
Edit: Just hit stangelove vip by ital tek song was A++ best in mix so far!
|
While most of the songs aren't that old, they are based off the original sound of dubstep when it was first developing.

yeah great mix, I really enjoyed it. While I still enjoy the 'average dubstep' I do love mixes that are uh... cleaner I guess.

Thanks man! I'm really glad you're enjoying it. That song is definitely a good'un eh?

Wow! I really appreciate you taking the time to offer feedback on every single mix, lol, that's awesome! Thanks a lot for your kind words. I agree with a lot of what you said, specifically regarding some of the weaker mixes there. I was mixing it all at quite a high volume (was having fun with it) so some of the more subtle differences in track volume went largely unnoticed.
Thanks again!

Funnily enough I've been listening to a lot of James Blake recently and was planning on slipping a track or two of his into this mix, just didn't get around to it though. I'll have to make a note to do so in my next one.
As regards it not being like other, more average, dubstep that you've heard, well, I know what you mean. I hate to get all elitist about it, but a lot of the artists that I chose tracks from are known as 'real dubstep' producers (with more emphasis on actual dub influence, and not just making the filthiest drop they can manage). Again, I don't like to deal two much with all of this pigeon-holing of music, but I can definitely see where you're coming from.

Yea, that's definitely true. A lot of these songs do sound more like the early days of the scene, with stronger dub influences and slightly more minimalist/sparse productions.
