So my friend was in Korea in December and new year and he filmed two parts video of the Hongdae area in Seoul.

Just to show what goes on in the night time of Hongdae. Really interesting stuff.

Why when I go to asia is it always foreigners who get into retarded fights so embarrassing.
Interesting footage though especially that it is subtitled.

That was quite interesting. Ahhh, Hongdae. TBH I never really got into that part of Korean nightlife. Always preferred going earlier in the day and chilling at one of the cute cafes (my favorite was the Hello Kitty cafe ^^). The one night I did go out clubbing in Hongdae, I kept getting ambushed by creepy old Indian men on the streets, so I never went back after that :/

I'm with Kiett on this one. I don't go there at night (I don't drink and I'm not interested in clubbing/bars.), but I love it during the day. In addition to the quirky cafes, and the weekly market there's also Volks Korea, Book Saetong, Toon K, and the Comic World shop to keep me occupied with geekery. It's a great place to stroll around taking photos of too thanks to the street art etc.

Excellent depiction. This captures the part of the town up the hill very well, especially all the infamous Hongdae Park action. Club Cocoon is horrendous though. The only decent club in Hongdae is M2. Screw every foreigner except the ones helping the Korean girl in video 2. Hongdae is going down hill FAST because of all the foreigners crawling over from Itaewon, which is every fight you saw in this video amplified into one location. I felt like this captured a lot of the negatives of Hongdae though, which kind of sucks.

The music scene here is awesome. One of my best friends in Korea is the singer of a band called The Geeks. They have been playing straight-edge youth crew hardcore for over 15 years and pioneered heavy music in Korea. The scene is so positive and has people from all different groups involved. The shows are DIY in any basement, bar or venue available. We always share food and drink after shows, especially when bands from Japan or the USA come into town.

The street art is next-level, with tagged murals, provocative quotes, rebellious politics, and more. Hand-sewn clothes are being sold on the streets by fashion students. Hand-roasted and imported coffees are for sale up from subway exit 4, and Italian hole-in-the-wall's can be found at the drop of a hat.

There's just a few things missing, as I mentioned. Everything in these videos is the real deal.

That DVD방 next to Baskin Robins........ Fuck.
Make a lot of friends. Wear good clothes. Drink good beer. Love a nice girl.

wow nicely shot. do you know from which camera phone?

In the 2nd vid that dude trying to get that girl is clearly a waiter (from the walkie talkie thing on his back). haha

edit: hate to say it but not enough people shuffling..(its maddening how much this song plays at one place in a span of 2-3 hours)

Was fun to see that.

Only been to Hongdae once during nigh-time (last saturday actually). Fun place in all honesty. Went to a bar with a friend that she usually goes to. Quite god damn shocking how many foreigners that showed up though.

And I fucking love the Silent Disco that was shown (the parts where people where dancing with headphones on). Looks so strange when they wear black headphones since they are camouflaged by the night.

Damn that was pretty good, but I must ask, in the scene with the police in the second vid, what the hell happened? Also, were all the people that were completely out or looked like they were incoherent just smashed? (sorry I have yet to experience the night life lol)

Those white guys were probably us military people, right?
I've heard that generally that our servicemen are looked down upon because they cause problems for koreans. (I think I read that in one of rekrul's posts iirc)

you have good and you have bad. I know a few of my friends in the army base in Korea are completely ignorant of Korea and Korean culture. I think one took the taxi for 9 months before we introduced the subway. People don't really like that,

Yea I'm with this guy. Your friend did a really nice job capturing different aspects of hongdae, but needs more shuffling! I can't count how many times I heard Party Rock Anthem this past winter in Hongdae. Didn't help once Lovely Dovey was added to the mix.

Pretty cool video. It doesn't really make me want to go there or anything, but it was still cool to watch. Actually, the outside park stuff looked awesome, but the rest of the Club shit I could care less about.

Really good videos IMO. Especially @8:15+ in the second video. Really shows that many of the issues of alcohol abuse that are faced by the US and European countries are just as much of an issue in Asian countries. I think many westerners see Korea as a country of highly educated robot-like workaholics; so interesting to see average young Koreans portrayed in a more realistic way.

The juxtaposition of the drunken foreigners getting into fights and the drunken Koreans getting into fights makes a great point: no matter where you go in the world there are stupid people.
I like the way the walls go out. Gives you an open feeling. Firefly's a good design. People don't appreciate the substance of things. Objects in space. People miss out on what's solid.

Yes and no. A lot of times it is military, but a lot of time it is "teachers"—especially in Hongdae. Most military isolate themselves to Itaewon or Yongsan. I quote that word because it requires no degree in education, no certification, or related major to acquire a teaching position in Korea. On top of that, the majority of teachers do not care which country they work in, because they work strictly for a paycheck. Korea has the highest paying positions and the highest amount of them available, so many foreigners choose Korea.

+1 shuffling

Amazing footage. Your friend did a great job.

I went out drinking somewhere in Korea back when for a TL meetup. This made me look up lilsusie's blog post on it out of nostalgia.

Drinking in Korea is really fun. The drinking culture there is social, and the goal is to have a good time, not be all bro and get fucked up. I got fucked up anyway, though.

@OP: Does your friend have other videos? Those two were incredibly well done and I'm curious what else he's worked on.

Great videos. Reminds me of some great times in Hongdae (as well as some not so great nights). Korea is the best place in the world to party.

However, the fight part reminds me why i tend to hang out with Koreans rather than many foreigners in Korea. So many dickhead bros. I wish the military curfew extended to dickhead teachers who can't responsibly consume alcohol as well.

I'd love to go Korea for a week or so.. How much should one bring for shopping, hotel and clubnights? 1,5k€? More? Are the prices comparable to any European city? I live in Stockholm where a standard 4cl drink/shot costs about 12-15€ and a beer like 5-7€.

Thanks in advance

Ugh. This is the kind of fucked up hedonism I escaped when I came to Korea.

The magic of the Korea isn't in these videos (although I did enjoy Club Cocoon when I went). It's before all that stuff, when you are with your friends, relaxing and eating and drinking.

Fucking waygooks man.

EDIT: That aside, the video is very cool and I seem to have completely missed all the street performances whenever I've been

Im curious too. Was there some kind of special event going on at the time of filming? Ive also hardly ever seen the random public performances and dont know how representative the video really is in that regard.

Um, in my experience of living here some Koreans are no better when it comes to drunken fights/shouting/puking everywhere etc. I've seen some incredibly immature drunken behavior on both sides, so it's kind of annoying to see people making blanket statements like 'Fucking waygooks man.' Not all of us 'waygooks' are the same you know.

The magic of the Korea isn't in these videos (although I did enjoy Club Cocoon when I went). It's before all that stuff, when you are with your friends, relaxing and eating and drinking.

Fucking waygooks man.

Well, stereotypes are rooted in reality. Plus, the "good" ones are much less impressivew than the type that brawls. =|

I lived in Hongdae all this past summer. The footage your friend captured out front of Book (or 1300K) really represents the spirit of Hongdae. Guys would always be giving away free energy drinks there and I would just grab a couple of bottles of Soju and chill listening to the live music.

The fighting is really dumb but as NeverGG pointed it out it's not 100% foreigners at fault.

Also lol at the Turkish guy not getting let in the club and saying "I'm fucking Korean!". Poor guy.

Overall the video is really well done and I'm going to just send it to people in the future when they ask me what it was like.

Although a 3rd video showing Hongdae during the day would be pretty cool. Especially some footage of the free market.

Hongdae is really polarized between its daylife and nightlife but both are pretty interesting.

You're a bitch . Went back to listen to it so I could help identify, now I'm going to be agonising about this while I sleep. Anyone?

Great to see something like this. I knew the night-life was sick over there, but not like this. I'd love to experience it some time soon. Maybe I can get out there this Summer! I'd mostly just wanna check-out all the street music.

I know, I know, don't worry. I am foreign and a teacher. I have many foreign friends (almost exclusively). I also have one mixed race friend and a gay friend!

That said.......(nothing good comes after That said)....I think Koreans *are* better when it comes to those things. It is only my experience but I've experienced hundreds and hundreds of drunken escapades both at home and in Korea and in six months here only one of those spectacles has involved a drunken Korean. And he was like 60.

The only time I've ever been touched in Korea is when I walked into a bar and after twenty seconds some drunk American grabbed my collar for absolutely no reason. The only time I've been annoyed or threatened or experienced drunken screaming in Korea is drunk foreign teachers. And I try to avoid foreign bars, so it's not proximity.

Maybe it's different if you go out in Seoul every weekend.

I have *seen* plenty of drunk ajusshis however

Turks? They sounded more like Pakstani/Indian to me.
