The music scene here is awesome. One of my best friends in Korea is the singer of a band called The Geeks. They have been playing straight-edge youth crew hardcore for over 15 years and pioneered heavy music in Korea. The scene is so positive and has people from all different groups involved. The shows are DIY in any basement, bar or venue available. We always share food and drink after shows, especially when bands from Japan or the USA come into town. The street art is next-level, with tagged murals, provocative quotes, rebellious politics, and more. Hand-sewn clothes are being sold on the streets by fashion students. Hand-roasted and imported coffees are for sale up from subway exit 4, and Italian hole-in-the-wall's can be found at the drop of a hat. There's just a few things missing, as I mentioned. Everything in these videos is the real deal. That DVD방 next to Baskin Robins........ Fuck.

In the 2nd vid that dude trying to get that girl is clearly a waiter (from the walkie talkie thing on his back). haha edit: hate to say it but not enough people shuffling..(its maddening how much this song plays at one place in a span of 2-3 hours)

Only been to Hongdae once during nigh-time (last saturday actually). Fun place in all honesty. Went to a bar with a friend that she usually goes to. Quite god damn shocking how many foreigners that showed up though. And I fucking love the Silent Disco that was shown (the parts where people where dancing with headphones on). Looks so strange when they wear black headphones since they are camouflaged by the night.

I've heard that generally that our servicemen are looked down upon because they cause problems for koreans. (I think I read that in one of rekrul's posts iirc)

I know a few of my friends in the army base in Korea are completely ignorant of Korea and Korean culture. I think one took the taxi for 9 months before we introduced the subway. People don't really like that,

Your friend did a really nice job capturing different aspects of hongdae, but needs more shuffling! I can't count how many times I heard Party Rock Anthem this past winter in Hongdae. Didn't help once Lovely Dovey was added to the mix.

The juxtaposition of the drunken foreigners getting into fights and the drunken Koreans getting into fights makes a great point: no matter where you go in the world there are stupid people.

A lot of times it is military, but a lot of time it is "teachers"—especially in Hongdae. Most military isolate themselves to Itaewon or Yongsan. I quote that word because it requires no degree in education, no certification, or related major to acquire a teaching position in Korea. On top of that, the majority of teachers do not care which country they work in, because they work strictly for a paycheck. Korea has the highest paying positions and the highest amount of them available, so many foreigners choose Korea. +1 shuffling

I went out drinking somewhere in Korea back when for a TL meetup. This made me look up lilsusie's blog post on it out of nostalgia. Drinking in Korea is really fun. The drinking culture there is social, and the goal is to have a good time, not be all bro and get fucked up. I got fucked up anyway, though. @OP: Does your friend have other videos? Those two were incredibly well done and I'm curious what else he's worked on.

However, the fight part reminds me why i tend to hang out with Koreans rather than many foreigners in Korea. So many dickhead bros. I wish the military curfew extended to dickhead teachers who can't responsibly consume alcohol as well.

The magic of the Korea isn't in these videos (although I did enjoy Club Cocoon when I went). It's before all that stuff, when you are with your friends, relaxing and eating and drinking. Fucking waygooks man. EDIT: That aside, the video is very cool and I seem to have completely missed all the street performances whenever I've been ![]()

The fighting is really dumb but as NeverGG pointed it out it's not 100% foreigners at fault. Also lol at the Turkish guy not getting let in the club and saying "I'm fucking Korean!". Poor guy. Overall the video is really well done and I'm going to just send it to people in the future when they ask me what it was like. Although a 3rd video showing Hongdae during the day would be pretty cool. Especially some footage of the free market. Hongdae is really polarized between its daylife and nightlife but both are pretty interesting.

Not all of us 'waygooks' are the same you know. I know, I know, don't worry. I am foreign and a teacher. I have many foreign friends (almost exclusively). I also have one mixed race friend and a gay friend! That said.......(nothing good comes after That said)....I think Koreans *are* better when it comes to those things. It is only my experience but I've experienced hundreds and hundreds of drunken escapades both at home and in Korea and in six months here only one of those spectacles has involved a drunken Korean. And he was like 60. The only time I've ever been touched in Korea is when I walked into a bar and after twenty seconds some drunk American grabbed my collar for absolutely no reason. The only time I've been annoyed or threatened or experienced drunken screaming in Korea is drunk foreign teachers. And I try to avoid foreign bars, so it's not proximity. Maybe it's different if you go out in Seoul every weekend. I have *seen* plenty of drunk ajusshis however ![]()
