So I rarely make a long, helpful thread on TeamLiquid that would actually mean a lot and help a lot of people. I decided to make one today, and I was really commited to making this. I had photoshopped a banner, I had typed about six pages in this thread. I am not going to say what the purpose of the thread was or what it was going to serve, but I assure you it would have helped this community a lot. I was typing up the thread, making pictures and alt tabbing between starcraft and back to my thread (I needed to keep alt tabbing between starcraft and my thread for me to be able to type this thread) and I was amazed at how much I wrote. The high quality of the writing was extremely good and I was very proud of it. I had just finished making pictures, a fancy banner, pages and PAGES of writing in response to what the thread was focused on, and I was ready to post. But I was about to type one last sentence that had the letter C in it. "six zerglings ... ... etc ... " but I managed to hit ALT when I went to go press the space bar. I hit the space bar and ALT at the same time, and if you have google chrome, you know what Space Bar + ALT does. So I was typing the next letter, which happened to be a C. If you look at the hotkey for C, you will see why I screamed "NOOOOOO" for about five seconds. I swear to god, I am so pissed off and that thread would have been amazing. But I am not going to attempt to make the thread until maybe four weeks. BTW, ALT+Space+C closes the browser instantly, like ALT F4.
So yeah, fuck you Google Chrome. Thanks a lot for throwing all my hard work down the drain. FUCK YOU. Thanks for reading

cool story bro ^_^ You made me try out alt space c and close my browser.

There's a valuable lesson here. Never try to contribute to TL ever.

Hi my name is google docs, please use me as I save your work automatically.

I feel your pain. Shoutout to the people that I started writing huge PM replies to, accidentally closed the browser, and then couldn't be bothered to send anything more than a one liner.

I mostly use emacs and had to use microsoft notepad to modify some document.
I fixed the wrong line and then use control-a (beginning of line in emacs) Then tried to save using control-x, control-x (save in emacs)
It turns out that in microsoft land I did, (select all), (cut), (save)

I freaked and called someone who knew windows and they told me I could control-z to undo my change so thankfully I was saved!

This is why any time you write a post that means absolutely anything to you, you write it in notepad

Now that I know that command, I'll probably accidentally press it when I least want it.
...Thanks!

Can't you just open a recently closed tab to restore the post (as long as you're not in incognito mode)?

Yeah, whenever I type long posts on forums I paste my progress into a .txt document every paragraph or so because... you know how when you don't have your cursor in a text box and you press backspace how it goes "back" a page? Yeah, that has happened more than once to me.
|
Hmm I just tested my google chrome, and closed it using alt+spacebar+c. Upon reopening I used recently closed tabs button in the bottom right corner and restored my tabs and my writing was still here. So you did try that right??

I wish you had replied five minutes within the making of this thread, as I had opened and closed too many tabs since your reply. OH MY FUCKING GOD THAT WOULD HAVE WORKED, TOO! SHIT

This is why I always write any long post in Notepad, then copy-paste to the forum when done.
|
Even if helpful thread in question never existed, you got every chrome user that reads this to close their browser. :D
|
For what it's worth.... alt + spacebar, then c closes chrome, firefox, and IE.... it's not just chrome, it's most programs that use alt as the menu shortcut, and the overall program thing is usually default. This is true for microsoft word as well, and notepad.
|
This is why I have a habit of constantly cntrl+c(ing) on any longer posts I do. That way if any stupid shit happens I don't end up losing my post.
|
i never start long posts in a browser window for this exact reason. i've had it happen to me MANY times, and it's one of the most frustrating things in the world. after it happens you just feel like you will never be able to express what you originally had intended as good ever again.
lesson learned:
making a long post? type it in notepad / wordpad / openoffice / whatever first.

Same here. Most text editing programs (word, notepad, etc) will ask you to save before you close them. To avoid the exact disaster the OP had, whenever I'm writing a long post I just open it in notepad, finish it and copy paste into TL. Most of the time I'll even copy-paste parts of it as I'm writing just to use the preview function to make sure its formatted correctly.

LOL once i had to make a project for my class in school, i was doing it for a few days, last day i was doing some last edits, guess what happened,i copied a file with the same name in a folder where my project was, i replaced it and at that very moment when i pressed yes, i realized what i had done, FUUUUUUUUUUUUUU i was raging for another hour. I was so damn pissed.Than i instantly, with all the rage, started doing it again, when i finished it was a lot worse than original but it was done on time :>

I hate when people say "if you do 'A' then you obviously know 'B'" and I actually do 'A' a lot but I don't know 'B'....makes me feel so dumb. e.g. I had to press alt+space bar to understand the story....

That's what you get for torturing yourself and using emacs given the options available lol
