This past Saturday I had the privilege to attend my first Starcraft tournament, being the scrub platinum player that I am I was very nervous and intimidated by the amount of masters players there ( one who was playing pro players T_T) You can imagine my excitement when I found out that there was two divisions of the tournament, one being diamond-master and the other platinum and under. Now I had never even seen another Starcraft player in person and none of my friends played, I was shocked to learn that there were at least 40 nerdballers out there who enjoyed this great thing we call Starcraft!

Now back to the tournament, all of the matches were Bo3 and my first match of the day was a ZvP on Metalopolis. Of course I just had the bright idea of trying to metagame my opponent by assuming he would FFE ( it was metal gimme a break! :D) So I was very shocked to learn after I put down my third hatch that he did a 3gate build.... Ruh Roh... Luckily he only found out about the third after it was done and mining. At the 6 minute mark I was smelling something fishy (no expand by toss) and sacrificed one of my brave overlords for the greater good. That brave soldier did his duty and spied a warping DT shrine. Aha! His dt expand was scouted and since I had such a large economic advantage it was smooth sailing from there.. Oh wait somehow in my exultation from scouting the shrine I had let 6 zealots nearly kill my third... Im so good. After that scare the game was pretty much over, and I ended up winning the next game to finish that match 2-0.

On to the next match, my next opponent was also a protoss (just my luck T_T) these games were nowhere near as exciting, other then the fact that as part of my army comp in game 2 I did the slow creep spread march of death, using 6 queens as AA with some roaches God Save the Queen(s)!!!

My next matchup was the one i was most worried about... ZvZ (Insert Dramatic sounds effect here)
First game was pretty standard, ling/bane wars transition into roach V roach battle. In which I ended up winning just by the skin of my ass. Second game was not my best work.. 14/14 into 8lings + spine crawler rush. Needless to say I cried myself to sleep at the memory of that cheese...

So at this point I was feeling pretty good... Who am I kidding I felt like the fucking king of the world.

BTW thats not me....

At this point I had had won 3 series without dropping a game.. Awww yeeeee /brag

The finals were a whole nother story... To get things straight as this was my first LAN event I was pretty shook up and nervous. To add onto that the finals of my division were being streamed downstairs onto a projector where 30+ people watched me play, it may not seem like much but it a really awesome experience and made me appreciate the amount of skill it took to play infront of thousands.

Back to the games, my opponent this time was a Terran, I thought I had it easy since ZvT was my second best matchup. But I came to learn that marines are a pretty good unit XD 3 out of 5 games were some kind of marine/tank timing push. The first game I won using some mutalisk harass and crushing his first push putting him way behind. The second game on Xel Naga made me want to fill a locker full of zerg tears The same build was used but this time without a fast third I could do almost nothing to stop it, well maybe I could have turned down the suck but you know......

At this point the score is 1-1 in a Bo5, the third game was on Antiga so I figured a good ol fashioned macro game. Needless to say he did the same marine/tank timing push and killed my third... At this point I thought the game was over but I realized during all of our games the terran seldom took the towers. So since I was so far behind I decided to go bat shit crazy and double expand at the golds... It worked.

Score is 2-1 I'm vibrating in my seat at the prospect of winning in my first tournament. Last game is shattered temple. At the beginning we agree that I wont use mutalisks if he doesnt use marines :D ( who cares were platinum!!!) After a normal hellion expand without those damn marines, I sent my overlord lieutenant to scout the opposing enemy's base.. He died well revealing the sly ways of the terran war machine...... CLOAK BANSHEES!!!!!!!

I got pretty scared, I hadn't even started my lair and I couldn't use mutas? WHAT COULD I DO?!?!
Simple answer.
Queens. 5 queens to be exact.

Trying to go for some type of all in he didn't know I had seen his trickery and after a rather effective drop of blue flame hellions I marched my ENTIRE base over to him drones and all. ( But unknown to him I had made a hydra den haha!!!) I started to focus those damn banshees while my roaches fought the hellions and my brave drones battled against the terran workforce. The game was very intense from this point on, I could hear the crowd ooohh and ahhh at dat micro.. In the end it all came down to 2 hydras marching their slow snail butts cross map to snipe the last remaining banshee...

Silence...

My Reaction....

Greatest feeling in the world, knowing all that ''hard work'' payed off with my first win, and at that time I learned there was a cash prize.. 25 BUCKS!!! JUST FOR PLAYING STARCRAFT!!!! I then realized that technically I am a progamer now... Better watch out guys you wont see the last of me, ill be sure not to rough IdrA up too much at the next MLG seeing as how I am a progamer now........

Was a good first blog, I like the queen picture. Pictures really help to alleviate the density of long posts. It's great you won money. Must be an awesome feeling to get money for playing a video game Did you find a huge difference in the quality of your playing in LAN compared to ladder? Do you feel like you've gotten over the nervousness of playing live for money?

I found an improvement in my mechanics and macro for some reason, but like I said the last guy I played I couldn't figure out how to stop the marine tank push from doing some damage. Maybe it was because I didn't have time to analyze the games after. Usually I'm used to playing one person once so if they do something crazy I won't have to deal with it again. I think that it was a really good way for me to get a taste of big tournies (although this was tiny in comparison) and that next time I'll play a bit better and so on. I think the people that held this one are planning on doing one once a month so that will be awesome, plus I got asked to go on the teams practice roster for the North America league thats happening soon, really excited for that.
