Hi folks and a more than merry christmas to you all! Im heading over to Paris on the 29th and will be going back to Berlin on the 2nd. Problem is im leaving around 7pm and will be going via Amsterdam. ETA will be around 8 pm and my plane to Berlin is not leaving until 8 in the morning, which gives me around 11 hours to enjoy the finer things the Amsterdam nightlife has to offer*winkwink*
However, im not really planning on getting laid for cash so ill probably confine myself to looksies and no touchies! is there anything you lovely lovely people from the netherlands can recommend? Is it easy to get from Shiphol to Amsterdam city centre? Mind you Ive never been to Amsterdam before and Ill be there on a night from monday to tuesday iirc.
So what im looking for is:
1. how to make my way from the airport to the city and back ( barring taxi)
2. so i heard Amsterdam has kind of a raunchy side to it, ummh where would one have to look to find such an area? Im just asking for a friend of mine who happens to want to go Amsterdam too...
3. is there anything else you can recommend for spending time?

The best way to go from Schipol airport to city center is by train. There is a train station in the airport, and the train station in Amsterdam is in the center. Smoke weed, be careful, it's really strong there, can't be compared to anything else. Then wander in the small walking streets.

You should take a small ship and trip through the waterstreets, its really nice, almost compareable to venedic.
If you dont smoke weed at all then uve never tried. Its holiday I guess, I recommend to go into a cofeshop, they got very nice ambient and the taste of sativa there is unique, you would really miss a great experience.
Dont care too much, its not unhealthy at all.
They got a puppet museum, I dont recommend that its boring as hell.
If u have smoked, i highly recommend going into it, its fun as hell.

I seems very odd to me that someone traveling between Paris and Berlin would take a plane that stops in ... Amsterdam? for 11 hours. Paris-Berlin by plane should only take little over an hour, or even if you take a train it would only take 8 hours with a much better price.
Anyway, I was in Amsterdam last Christmas, but unfortunately all I got to see was 20cm of snow and -12°C freezing winds.
I don't think it's quite as cold this year, otherwise walking on frozen canals sounds "cool".
As the person above said, you can take a 'Sneltrein' (I believe that's the name) from the Airport to Amsterdam Centraal. I thought the "Food Wall" (Burger vending machine) was quite funny. It's handy if you want to grab a quick bite though.

it was the cheapest flight available at that time, so i took the sour with the sweet and opted for this flight.
it was comparably cheap, downside though was the 12 hour stay over the night in amsterdam which seems really rather retarded but what can u do? im takin it as a bonus on my vacation and actually enjoy little stays like that on my own in a city i havent been to before:-P

i smoked weed once and ended up goign through all the stages usually associated with first-time weedsmokers. including falling asleep at the end for a couple of hours....so thats sth id like to avoid^^

If you want to go clubbing and avoid the really touristy places and go to the one of the currently more 'happening' places in Amsterdam, I recommend Trouw. (http://www.trouwamsterdam.nl/en/) The crowd is very dependant on the kind of night tho, but it's always friendly and hardly ever disappointing.
I'm not sure what you're looking for tho, this is just from my own preferences. Have anything special in mind?

i dont really plan on clubbing tbh, im more into stuff that rly sets amsterdam apart from other cities. i can go clubbing for days on end in berlin, but since amsterdam is known as that sort of raunchy place i...err i mean my friend would really like to know a little bit about that. this friend has been to hamburg for the first time last year and was rather overwhelmed by the sheer gaudiness of the "reeperbahn". you dont find places like that in berlin:-D
but seriously, i will at some point make my way into the redlight district of amsterdam. but im rly up for anyting, except excessive clubbing. i dont mind being on my own and looking at stuff in kim-long il fashion. i even get kicks out of tourist attractions like monuments, famous buildings and stuff, especially at night.

As far as travel goes the easiest way is probably by train. In the hall of Schiphol airport there's escalators going down directly into a trainstation in which it's pretty easy to grab a train to Amsterdam Central. Trains go back and forth all day and night as far as I know and though I'm not sure about the price you should be able to go there and back again for under 10 euros.
As far as the nightlife goes I'm not /that/ familiar with it. To be honest though Amsterdam should be quite active thursday/sunday night and you shouldn't have trouble finding some places to hang out. If you want to you could try to check out The Mad Processor which is a local lan cafe. It's about 15 minutes walk from central station plus if you plan your route right you'll come straights through the redlight district. The guys there are pretty cool, I'll point em to this thread when I see them.
Also, not smoking weed in Amsterdam isn't happening, stuff's pretty much in the air.

great to hear about the train stuff! so theyre really on the job throughout the entire night? even during the week? the way it is in berlin all trains cease to run at around 1 am til 5 am. should this not be the case with amsterdam then that would be really helpful. not really sure what id do at a lan cafe even tho it sounds really nice :-) maybe ill give it a try

If you're looking for some adult entertainment I'd suppose you would just have to head over to the Red Light District. Don't worry, that's real easy to find when you're arriving at Central Station. I wouldn't expect too much out of it to be honest, it's all pretty pervy and awkward in my opinion.
What I'd do if I were you; head to Leidseplein when you get off the train, grab a beer in one of the many cool bars and pubs around there. Then I'd smoke some weed at the infamous Bulldog coffeeshop, but if that's not your thing maybe take a stroll through the Red Light District. Always fun and good times in my experience. After that I'd just go dancing to be honest, try Trouw or maybe Club AIR (esp. good on thursday nights.) However, I'm worried that if you're coming from Berlin our nightlife might really dissappoint you...
