Does it really justify a blog entry?

Yes, it does. Julyzerg streams his ladder practice.

Yeah he does, so??

It was just in 2008 when I learned about korean Starcraft play. Since I play zerg myself, I focussed mostly on zerg players. Julyzerg did not only impressed me with zerg skills but also with general player skills. And with his physical presence. It's hard to describe Julyzerg's play. Many players obviously know the rules of the game and play accordingly. July often seems to create his own rules. And forces them upon the other player.

While I admire Jaedong, I adore Julyzerg.

Then Starcraft 2 came. That was the time when streaming was beginning to grew into HD streams. I watched some players, some great players. But I did never dare to dream to watch a god while he graces the ladder.

As July transitioned to SC2 and appeared in the GSL, I wasn't able to miss a single game. He was playing the game! And he delivered. While he has been in finals just once, he again proved to be different from the everyday zerg. For example take his strategy for Terminus RE, one of the largest maps, versus a Protoss. He sixpooles. He scouted his enemy late and he was on crossposition. July won – because he hid his zergling force, making his opponent think he tries to drone up. He did this trick twice in the same game. How can he pull this off? Because he knows how to use your reason against you.

Now July streams. Watching this stream is not just fun, it's joy. He brings out the essence of zerg. He makes zerg real.

You don't choose to play zerg. The zerg choose you.

Unfortunately it does feel like July has gotten slower since his BW days. I didn't like to think that older players could get slower mechanically but maybe it's true? Or is it just sc2? He was really fast in BW

I think it's both

July's my favorite player from Broodwar, so happy he's streaming :D

Well i think SC2 made him slower. Less things to do, you would need to spam so much to keep as fast as in BW. Some pros do it, but many don't. Although it's possible he got a lil bit slower anyway.

And yeah i love to see him stream, too!

if july was streaming bw a few years ago im sure he'd have all of TL watching it constantly, sad seeing him only having like 600 viewers atm and stuff

i totally agree. although i don't know if it would've been more at that time, the community was quite a lot smaller

the competition for streamers is rising rapidly.

I know! I can understand wanting english commentary, and I like Destiny and Catz at least as much as the next guy, but it's a crime when July has such lesser viewership. July is the essence of aggressive zerg.

Can't be helped. I don't think most viewers can tell the difference in skill anyhow, but as for me it's getting harder and harder to watch lesser skilled players stream now after watching some of the best.

Yes, at any given moment some real good players stream. Some even stream when they give lessons.

Still, Julyzerg is something else. His patience and his decisiveness at the same time, the (almost) flawless micromanagement of his units, his deep strategic knowledge all contribute to that kind of zerg play which – in my eye – transcend the kind of play I am used to.

Watching July's stream quickly became a habit of mine.

julyzerg is often a man of his own way when he plays starcraft and when i watch him. his early games to now seem like the very same sort of control yet sometimes he tries harder and sometimes less (maybe as he feels he's about to lose).

so he does his thing, had immense style with the way he can control units, plays his own game without an intricate build order that ranges 10 minutes, and does all of what he wants to do with his blazing speed and decisions.

when you see him go between hatchery hotkeys, you'll see him creating units instantly and going onto the next hatchery. this is a sign of a real BW pro in my eyes, and while it might technically not be the best or the most efficient way to playing, it is his very own and makes his aggressive play extremely accurate in its own way.

ever since BW, people told him that they loved his style no matter a win or loss.. when you watch his stream, it may feel as though he is making mistakes knowingly or on purpose because he wants to play his own game.

--and this is all so inspiring to see. his mechanics have always been par none to me (while watching his stream he feels -always- above 300-360APM mark), and i feel like he has the strengths of all the best in BW although he chooses not to use them sometimes.

That is strange indeed.

I like to read a good book, not only for the content but also for how well it is written. I like to listen to good music, not only for the nice melody but also for the meaningful rendition. I like to watch good play. July is one of the good players.

I totally agree with this blog.

Been so many years I first saw july playing, sauron zerg, muta stack, hold position lurkers... always loved watching his games.
Hope he get more views, 800 is so much less than he deserves imo =)

JulyZerg is king. July vs Best was the forst OSL final I even cared about as a sport and not just an interesting show. July brought the pain in that tournament and Best was nothing but a pedestal on which July could stand. Poor little kid, never played on the big stage before, and here was a monster, reborn from his slump, ready to take the golden mouse that had evaded him for so long, and he could do nothing. Because who could expect July to straight up 5pool in the first game in a best of 5 everyone knew he desperately wanted to win? And who could have seen the drone drill come in game 2? And just to prove his point, he smashed apart the macro king in a straight up game on a macroheavy map to take the 3-0.

Because that is July. He works on an all-in trigger. He will take a look at a base and think "That is not safe enough". He will go inject larvae. And then he destroys. And when that doesn't happen, he will tear his opponent apart with hyperaggression that just somehow works when mostly anyone else would fail.

Watching the old VoDs make me regret not watching the games when he was in his prime, because the old July-oov games, when oov was 27-0 vZ mind you, are absolutely beautiful. Watching July play well is amazing. Period.

Watching July's stream makes me kinda sad. It's so bland and slow compared to the bw fpvods I saw. I watch him a bit despite disliking sc2 because you know, he's july, but in the end I'm more entertained watching any bw stream
This feels so wrong.

You could already see this happen back before he quit BW.

A lot of his last BW games were really ugly to watch from a mechanics standpoint.

Since he will go to serve in the military, he will may be already never be as good again. But thas is then and now is now. I am currently watching his stream and his play inspires me. Even when he loses like he just did on Antiga Shipyard, he looks good.

July plays zerg in such a fashion its just pure beauty for my eyes. He is creative and playful in his play, and he makes it work. I mean, 1 base muta vs a FFE protoss who goes stargate as well, and then after some battles, july sits on 3 base and outmacro/micro the opponent. He is just incredible.

Maybe, with HotS involving new units, this will favour July's way of finding new strategies to play with, more suitable for his style, making this man a monster.

July's been my all-time favorite player ever since I first learned about pro BW. I didn't even know he streamed since I usually ignore anything sc2-related (sorry!), but I'll be sure to keep an eye out for his stream from now on! Thanks for the thread .

I was also very excited to see the God of War stream, to try to glean some of those high level humiliating mind games. But I found that it was really hard to see them from the stream. I just saw that July at random points in the game would stop building drones and do an all-in a minute or two later. I had no idea what triggered it, and why he chose that unit combination, and when the right moment to attack was. He kept winning with these attacks, that seemed incredibly risky from my more macro-oriented conservative style. I knew he had good reasons, but I just couldn't figure them out.

Then also, I noticed that he had very strange (seemed just bad for me, but then I'm low diamond and he has a golden mouse, so I didn't know what to think... ) mechanics. His mouse is fast, but he has weird hotkey setup (hotkeys hatcheries, and does inject by double tap hatch, select queen with mouse, inject, click. And while he flickers around with the screen quickly, it doesn't feel as agile as when you watch other zergs with smooth mechanics like idra or violet. For example, in a ZvT he kept not hotkeying his zerglings. He had (some of) his mutas on a hotkey, but to move around his lings (that was more or less at his rally point and destroying rocks etc) he would go from his natural and scroll with the edge of the screen to his lings and give them new orders, without hotkeying them.

Those two point made me a bit disappointed. I'll still watch him over for example catz or TLO (no offence guys <3), but it was not as amazing as I had expected. Also, possibly after idra, he is the most trigger happy advertiser of the streamers I've watched. But that's ok, I don't need to watch him watch the search countdown or split his drones. So that said, thanks for streaming July!!! <3
