So recently I got into a fender bender and I'm not too sure what to do. We didn't call the police and I haven't reported it to the insurance company. I am pretty confused in what to do. It was my fault due to icy conditions. He did get a quote already for $1,200 - $1,500. I asked him to try and find another quote in hope it will be cheaper. Also I'm stressing out about this really bad because I'm pretty poor. And is paying for the repairs worth it not to get the insurance companies involved?

well its pretty simple imo, Pay 1,500 now, or pay 1,500 down the road in insurance costs. However if your already paying for insurance mine as well have them pay for it.

Not sure if it's the same in Canada, but in the U.S. it's illegal not to report the accident. If you're poor like you said, you probably don't have an extra 1,500 lying around. Might be easier to just let the insurance handle it, perhaps the icy conditions will play a factor.

Gotta love Canada eh Ice? Huge dump of snow in Edmonton today, anyways in response to the OP, like the last few posters above me said report it to insurance, I would be more helpful if I had a similar experience but I don't drive!

Ohhhh the irony in your name....but yeah report it to insurance. If it was only a couple hundred bucks maybe do it yourself but >$1000 isn't worth it.

You have insurance for situations like these, always report and typically (here in the States) call the police WHEN it happens, really helps out the insurance companies, etc. etc.

the insurance will probably say that because he did not call the police that they wont pay because they cant know if he didnt do the damage himself with the intention to rip off the insurance

Shouldn't we be asking questions like:

What's your deductable? If you have a $1000 deductable, you are only saving $200 -$500 by getting insurance to cover it -- is that worth reporting?
History of speeding tickets/ other accidents or violations?
Was anyone hurt?

In general, I recommend going through insurance. If you have a clean record, your rates may not go up at all. It also protects you from future liability. Let's say in 1 year, the other guy starts complaining about neck problems and decides to sue you for medical expenses. If it was reported to the insurance company, they will handle the ensuing legal issues and/or pay a settlement.

I mentioned that in a PM I sent to him, haha. ^^;

Someone rear ended me and we were like "pffft no big deal amirite" and the accident ended up being my fault somehow, because the other dude reported it despite saying we weren't going to. I didnt fix the car and I got rid of it haha.

Also at the post above, yeah probably, but really in this case it's probably best to call insurance regardless.

Thats odd. I thought if someone readends you then they are at fault due to not maintaining a proper/safe distance from the car in front. Id imagine it is situational though

My accident was a little weird. I'm not really sure how it qualifies as my fault...I (to this day) believe it should have been shared blame at the VERY least, but because no cops were around to report it, it just got charged as a violation to yield right of way on my part and I got docked for it.
