As a nerdy, teenage, 16 year old, dorky, wacky, somewhat awkward guy in high school, I get bored really easily with the amount of redundant physics homework and whatnot... This usually leads me to drawing Manga in the middle of class when I really should be working (although I think I have the grades to justify slacking off, so it's all good!)
For most of my life, I've read a lot of Japanese Mangas, (well, not A LOT,) as well as watching a a pretty fair amount of anime (mostly Angel Beats, Kanon and Clannad.) Ever since I had first read a Japanese Manga (I forget what it was called, way back when I was like 5 years old.) I've become interested in wanting to create my own series of Manga, but I don't feel like I have the dedication, nor the willingness to commit to such a project, however, it's has always been one of my dreams to be a somewhat, decently successful author. Although I wouldn't want to be ridiculously successful, I could never deal with all the attention.
Here's a sample of my drawing (Mostly done during physics class, of course).
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/4GJfT.jpg) Akami & Takeo
Took me a pretty solid 2 and a half hours to finish (with a few breaks in between, of course.) <(^o^)>
I begun with the heads and it just kinda took off from there. I drew some random bubbles at the end to fill in this really empty void space that they were standing in. BTW, I'm terrible at drawing feet so I just omitted the idea of them altogether. I couldn't draw feet to save my life. So instead, they're just kinda popping out of circles.
I never really got around to actually naming the characters. I was thinking "Akami" for the girl and something like "Takeo" for the guy. But overall, I'm not entirely sure about the names. I've never really been good with coming up with original names... so I was hoping you guys could suggest some creative names.
-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_
Spent about an hour and a half on this one. (Again, during physics class. (Who needs physics anyway? XD))
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/Je7zv.jpg) Yuuto
I chose to name him Yuuto. (Yes, it's actually a guy.) Dunno why I chose Yuuto, just seemed to be a good name at the time. A name that one of my friends in physics class thought I should name him.
History of me and that guy in physics I hang out with. + Show Spoiler +I guess while I'm at it, I'll tell you a bit about the history between me and my bud in physics. My friend's name is Josh. He's been my best friend for nearly a decade now. Me and him share a lot of common interests such as Manga (obviously), playing video games, hanging out at lunch and stuff like that. I've spent countless hours talking about stuff with him and a couple of my other friends. He has been one of my only REAL friends over the last few years (some people just seem to hang out with me cause they seem interested in my drawings and know I really like drawing Manga, or they think I'm weird, which I guess is cool too =D) All in all, I think I currently have the best life I could possibly wish for. My friends, my 2 brothers, my dad, and most importantly, my mom. She has been my motivation for as long as I can remember. And she's always willing to give her insight on anything.
Yuuto is an outgoing, enthusiastic and quirky guy in high school. Like me, I guess... He's certainly not the smartest, but he makes up for it by being funny. He also has an earring and necklace which my friend thought would be a fantastic idea. I was like "Sure, why not?" I didn't really shade the hair a whole lot cause I wanted this guy to be a sort of blonde-ish.

Drawing eyes, why not?
So today, thought I'd go back to the basics of drawing after what rauk had posted and have started studying human anatomy a bit, as well as taking out a few books from the school library about anatomy (these books are totally NSFW, my god...) I've also watched a few of Mark Crilley's videos on human proportions so I can apply it to my next drawings. (Gotta love Mark Crilley!)
I quickly drew up some eyes for you guys to criticize while I start working on my "human anatomy project with a background and a somewhat decent story" as I think I'm going to call it now (though I'm no Stephen King or anything, do don't expect anything mind blowing.)
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/rtkO7.jpg)
Had to take the pic with my webcam cause scanner wasn't co-operating Took like 20 minutes, wasn't too bad.
Hopefully, once I finish college/university, I'll have a lot more free time to chase my somewhat, overly optimistic dream which I've had for such a long time.

I've watched a lot a Mark Crilley's videos and I've learned a lot of stuff. I've watched the "How to draw feet" video and still can't do it. I've been thinking about purchasing his Miki Falls series, but I'm not sure. But thanks for posting the links.

You watch Key? You sir are a winner.
So your drawing shoujo manga?

hmmm.... you might wanna get a gist of anatomy, don't worry, it's not like when you're studying real life anatomy then you're wasting your time while you could have used it learning manga. But trust me, when you get a hold of it THEN that's the time you start injecting your own reference, say shoujo, etc.
GL bro.
EDIT: I can PM you some anatomy links if you want. :D well... if you want! (NSFW)

You're quite good! But creating your own manga would take extreme amounts of dedication, I imagine. I wish you good luck, anyway!
The Japanese is a bit off, Takeo can be written in multiple ways, but it won't really mean "husband". Also, it's hard to say that a Japanese name written in roman letters has a meaning in Japanese - it really needs kanji. It's also quite common that the names doesn't have a direct meaning, even if they are written in kanji. If you want help, I could help you with names/kanji. And for the record, Yukio does in no way mean "emperor".

So your drawing shoujo manga? Yep, or shonen, whichever you prefer. They're both pretty similar. And I love Key BTW. makes some of the best anime series I've seen.

Of course, if I really tried and dedicated my life to this type of thing, it could pay off in the end. Having a job doing the thing I love to do. But on the other hand, I don't want to have a lot of effort put into it, and nothing to show for it, which always makes me wonder. But anyways, thanks for your input!

Really dude? I even poured my heart in my post to give you advice =_= SO DISAPPOINTED!
Anyways keep it up Peanutbuttah! I mean most people who enjoy drawing manga style characters typically dream about creating their own manga, its a longshot pipedream of a goal, but if you really feel fulfilled by drawing, don't stop no matter what you do =). Who knows maybe you might make it!
I don't have the talent for it at all, but after a long history of self-practice my characters actually look pretty damn good and I have gotten quite good at accurately critiquing my work. It feels great when you know you've improved, just like in starcraft =).
I sincerely love it when people start drawing and share their work. Thank you for sharing, I hope you'll post more.

I feel the same way about hands as you do about feet lololo I'm a nerdy 16 year old awkward high schooler too, high five . Too bad I nap too much in class to get much doodling done. Have got some fandoodles for T-ara's new Cry Cry photos and stuff, lol (kpop)

Do one where they bend over, maybe wearing a tight skirt, black perhaps, so you can see panties + outline of cameltoe (yay), that's one of my favorite I think. (You can choose if you want to add cat ears, whiskers, whatever, I don't care about that, anything goes).

You might want to read Bakuman (don't watch the anime; it just doesn't work as well). It's about a couple of students on their road to becoming top mangaka. Pretty entertaining and even informative (assuming what they say is true) and might inspire you

haha dont worry , im very frivolous atm but there are certain things i will always come back to and eventually sort out and make routine / a true part of myself. i just need to build up one by one and it takes time for me to grow that discipline in a reliable way.

wow that new pic is real good
about Yukio, my character was called Yukio Mikado so it was "mikado" that meant emperor , i forgot where i got the "yukio" from h mmm. ah it means "man who get what he wants" apparently.

Akami means slight redness, blush. Akarumi / akarui means bright / cheerful. Pretty sure takeo doesn't mean husband/man. I don't have much else to add.

you're pretty good! I gave up trying to draw things a while ago. >.>

invest in getting a teacher. your drawings are rough and disproportionate and you'd probably benefit from someone who can consistently give you honest critique and push you to improve. it doesn't matter if they don't teach you "manga" style drawing since all art has the same basis in technique and you can always apply what you've learned in a different style. it's not impossible to reach professional quality (which seems to be your goal) being self taught, but it's going to be significantly harder trying to do so without a teacher.
you've only shown us characters, so i don't know how good you are at drawing backgrounds or scene composition. i'm assuming that like most kids who start drawing you haven't really done much of it. i'd say it's at least of equal importance in comics to being able to draw characters. there's also script writing; at my most cynical i think being able to tell a story is more important than being able to draw since there are plenty of successful mangastyle webcomic authors who can't draw worth shit (megatokyo for instance).

It's K if your drawing manga it just means that ppls eyes should be 10x bigger than in reality and have wacky, androgynous hairstyles, everything else is irrelevant.

I can't really invest in a teacher/tutor, I don't really know of any, at least not in the city where I live, and I doubt someones going to come over to my city just to teach some kid how to draw. I really just don't know where I can get a decent tutor that's willing to help me and fine tune my drawing. The only person I can really say is my "tutor" would be Mark Crilley's videos on YouTube. His videos have helped me a lot so I'm kinda starting to branch off and do my own kind of stuff now.
In my next blog post, I'll include a decent background (of course it won't be absolutely eye opening or anything.) I'll draw a full body rather than just a disembodied head floating in space. I'm also going to include a somewhat decent story on the next characters to develop my story creating skills a bit (Which isn't very much, but I figure I might as well develop my story skills now) This one's probably gonna take a while, I've never really done this type of thing before. Thanks so much for your input/criticism.

I think it might really help your drawing career, broaden your fanbase at the start. Then narrow it in on what you prefer once you've established a little.
They say that eerie, uncomfortable, tinglingy feeling when thinking about it is awesome, that means awesome, that you're growing, expanding your repertoire.

Seconding the learning-anatomy comments ^^ You're pretty patient (wow, two hours!) and you're really into details, but sometimes I reckon you should look at the bigger picture. There are some bits where their skeletal system doesn't quite... work, y'know?
You don't have to practice realism exclusively. Even setting 20% of your physics lessons (xD) to drawing un-stylised images would make the improvement to your manga drawings ginormous.
Keep it up, man.
