Music is an Outlet

Music is for me an outlet, a release, a source of entertainment, and a sensual lover.

Since moving here to the state of denial that is Nevada, I have been desperately trying to find new music, something fresh and creative, but have failed rather miserably.

There is a good side to all of this though....

It has given me time to get reacquainted with some old favorites. The kind of beautiful tunes and melodies that are almost ingrained into the very being that you sometimes forget about how absolutely brilliant some of them are.

I will now give you a list of a few songs that I had almost forgotten that I know by heart, these songs that I would sometimes think about with, "Man, I have not heard that in awhile..." and have a bit or problem remembering the things that I loved about them, but once you hear that very first note, hell, once you even start to hit the play button it all comes rushing back to you like a wave, like your first orgasm after being to busy to even jerk-off once in awhile, like an atomic bomb. (But without the radioactivity that could harm so many...), and at that moment, for a split second you know nothing except love, beauty, and pure joy....

...and a little bit of pure hatred and envy for NEVER being able to create something that amazing.

1. Two-Headed Boy by Neutral Milk Hotel
2. Birdhouse in Your Soul by They Might Be Giants
3. No Children by The Mountain Goats
4. Pushit by Tool
5. Stick shifts and Safety belts by Cake
6. At the Heart of It All by Nine Inch Nails
7. I Don't Want to Grow Up by Tom Waits
8. Revolution by The Beatles
9. Peace, Love, and Understanding by Nick Lowe (Elvis Costello version)
10. My Name is Jonas by Weezer
11. Ted, Just Admit It... by Jane's Addiction
12. Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd
13. Yellow Ledbetter by Pearl Jam
14. Muzzle by The Smashing Pumpkins
15. Take On Me by A-ha
...and many more. This is almost just a random list from the top of my head of favorite songs.

Since I am not finding much in the way of new music, I am trying to fill in the gaps in the old music collection that I desperately need filled in. I did pick up a few newer albums though that I am excited to listen to like the new Jane's Addiction and the new Tom Waits. Woot woot!

Let me know of songs that make you feel this way. What do you love about them?

Right there is an awesome idea for a song. Put a Guetta beat behind that and you will be as famous as Gaga in no time.

And hated for all eternity, but that's the price of (in)fame(y).

Music is for me an outlet, a release, a source of entertainment, and a sensual lover.

Well stated.

Been a long time since I wrote something like a song and it is prolly apt that it pertains to one passion that has stayed with me all my life. Sorry for boring people with some crappy lyrics/lines

+ Show Spoiler +

Music is ecstasy to me when I want to feel high
It is a coping mechanism when I feel I should die
Songs are a shoulder on which I often cry
They are a friend when I need an ally.

Drum solos make me bang my head
To guitars riffs, I guess I am wed
Have sang along in this life I have lead
Going to keep rockin' till am dead

I oscillate between listening classic rock, heavy metal, grunge rock, and instrumental music. Not going to try and make a top 10 list or anything as it is impossible to make something like that for me but off the top of my head, these 15 are the ones that currently come to my head:

1. Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
2. Wish you were here - Pink Floyd
3. Fade to Black - Metallica
4. House of Rising Sun - Bob Dylan
5. Behind Blue Eyes - The Who
6. What a Beautiful World - Louis Armstrong
7. Country Roads - John Dalton
8. Toxicity- System of a Down
9. Wonderwall - Oasis
10. Going Californoa - Led Zepelin
11. Wild Horses - Rolling Stones
12. Hallowed be Thy Name - Cradle of Filth
13. Nativity in Black - Black Sabbath
14. The Greatest Gig in the Sky - Pink Floyd
15. Man who sold the world - Nirvana

I usually go with heavy metal when I want to drown my worries, listen to floyd/nirvana when I want to feel like I am high, classic rock like bob dylan, beatles, who is best while I am working, rest of the stuff just goes along.

Some instrumental music I find awesome are:
(1) The Fountain soundtrack - Clint Mansell at his best but the music can be somewhat depressing at time.
(2) Last of the Mohicans soundtrack - its some great music.
(3) Wagner - Ride of Valkyries - great to play along while playing SC2.
(4) Mozart, Beethoven, some assorted Bach, oriental flute music
(5) Apocalyptica for some rock style instrumental - Hall of the Mountain King is freaking amazing
(6) Assorted Celtic and Irish music is cool too.

I guess I have rambled enough about music in someone else's blog :|

It is a good list friend. Some stuff in there I have not heard in a long time, since my musician days and roadie days. Haha...yeah, when I was 18 I was a roadie for a metal band and hung out with a lot of cool people. It was a blast.

I like The Nirvana version of Man Who Sold the World - always amazing. Stairway and Going to California are great ones also. I am a huge Beatles fan, so almost anything by them works, but Revolution and A Day in the Life are top notch, but also, I love that you put The Fountain soundtrack by Mansell because that is so friggin good. I have not listened to that in awhile. Although, I love House of the Rising Sun, I dig the old Ledbelly version or the famous Animals version better than Dylan's.

I dig the Apocalyptica version of Hall of the Mountain King, even though I don't particularly like Grieg or that piece much, but in their version, near the beginning, you hear a bit of what I believe are bowed cymbals. A good sound you don't hear enough in modern music. I dug it. Thanks for sharing!

Haven't heard a lot of Beatles lately but I remember some really good tracks. I am quite positive that if you like the 'Fountain' soundtrack and Mansell, you would probably have heard 'Requiem for a dream' soundtrack as well but if not, I would definitely recommend that.
As far as House of the Rising Sun is concerned, I recall one Dylan version where his vocals flatout are amazing. Apart from that version, I agree that The Animals has probably a better version than Dylan. I should check Ledbelly one too as I don't think i have heard that.

The LeadBelly (Or Ledbelly, found spelled both ways at times) is just one of the old dark blues versions from the 40s. I just dig old blues a lot.

Yeah, the Requiem soundtrack is flat-out amazing. The main theme has since been ripped off and reused so often, but it still gives me a chill when I hear it.

Overall with Dylan, I love some of his stuff and I hate other stuff, it is very hit and miss. I do not deny his strength as a songwriter and his ever-growing influence, but it is normally just not what I chill too. I am a huge folk-rock/acoustic style fan though, but I was always more of a Phil Ochs and Neil Young guy than a Dylan guy.

Mostly I find the Rolling Stones to be over-rated, but there are 3 songs which get me every time by them.
1. Paint It Black
2. Sympathy for the Devil
3. Get Off of My Cloud

Sympathy is the best. Paint it Black was my favorite Stone for a long time, but after awhile I grew much closer to Sympathy. I think it was after I would listen to the Jane's Addition version a bunch that the song meant more to me. Overall though, I have this huge amount of respect for the Stones as musicians. They are one of the great rock bands (Like the Beatles, Hendrix, and Zeppelin) who showed love and respect for the blues. That being said though, overall I rarely sit around listening to the Stones.

They really lost their touch into the 70s. There is a great song that I think about a lot by a songwriter named Jeffery Lewis called "The Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror" where he makes this great point in a line that says "The Stones in '65 want total satisfaction kid, but the Stones in '69 find grace in just getting what you need." That song is full of so much brilliance.
